So anyway, I'm buying a nice Blazer without an engine, it's a great price and I already have an engine lined up and towing and blah blah but it turns out the guy doesn't have the title for the Blazer.
He said he bought it for parts - and he was selling it for parts so it was whatever.
So I asked my dad about it and he said it was no big deal and he (the seller) could go to a DMV and get a title.
Now, I'd hate to have this guy go do all this considering I'm getting this at such a good price.
Is it possible for me to just go grab the title?
You know, me do the work. I'm technically not the owner but I guess he isn't either.
Depends on your state, but I've had friends combine parts from about 6 vehicles all acquired from salvage yards and they obtained a Builder's Title for it.
Actually have been looking.
Can't find any numbers.
The one I did find was only a recording and all ended up directing me to the website.
Might try finding the website, even if they don't have a number the state information they have up is normally pretty good.
Additionally, you should be able to file for a lost title, you or he could probably do that, but I think it would be in your best interest to try to get the guy you're buying it from to get the title for the vehicle.
They're not expensive at all, and it really shouldn't be all that much trouble if he wants to sell the vehicle.

Been there, but is getting a lost or duplicated title the same as not having one in the first place?
Ah well, guess I'll just take a trip to the DMV or give the seller another call.
Pretty much, yes, it's the same thing. I've never had to get a title the first time to a car, unfortunately. I figured since the frame of the body (which normally has the VIN number) would still be tied to a title, thus you should be able to get a lost title.
You'll need to file for lost title if you want to register the vehicle. Since the car is in the same state, it should be quite easy to get, too. Just go down to the DMV with year, make, model and VIN and state that you need to apply for a lost title. If they ask about ownership, tell them that you are purchasing/have purchased and need the info.
I'm willing to bet the current owner had never had a title for it, and it's probably still in yet another person's name. You should be able to acquire contact information for the titled owner and they should be willing to file the correct information with the DMV to help you get your title.

Ah good, calling around with a couple dead ends I was starting to lose hope.
Didn't know I could do that.
Let's just hope the original owner isn't some dick. :P

But research before you buy.
See how many books I've read so far in 2010
I live in PA if anyone else out there has encountered this before.
