With Shazam sneak previewing across the US this weekend, I figured it was high time we had a proper Shazam thread.

Billy Batson is a streetwise 14-year-old who can magically transform into the adult superhero Shazam simply by shouting out one word. His newfound powers soon get put to the test when he squares off against the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.

Early reviews have generally been positive. I've got my sneak preview ticket to see it at 4pm tomorrow. I'll admit, I'm rather looking forward to this.

Expect this movie to be decent, but dumb.

Just got out of the theater. I'll have spoilerey things to say later but it was really good. As much as Captain Marvel targeted the young girl audience, Shazam was targeting the young male audience. While it was far from transcendent it was so much fun that the flaws are easy to overlook and get overshadowed by all the good. Humor was a clear focus through the entire film. Nearly all the jokes landed and some even had the entire audience roaring with laughter, young and old alike. There really was something there for boys of all ages. It was a tight movie that kept thing moving along at a great pace. We got plenty of time to establish each of the characters and got great little moments with each that brought them to life. Darla was one of my favorites of the supporting cast. There was plenty of heavy moments to balance out the humor. I thought the movie did a good job of moving from one to the other. The super power testing scenes really worked for me. The CGI fights we're definitely imperfect but still managed to be thrilling. I've got a little t of good things to say and very few qualms.

I'm declaring it now. The old DCEU is dead. We are now in an era of good movies from these guys. Not great but very good.

Jokes that land is all I want from a superhero movie these days, because it seems hard as hell to do that.

I was at the comic shop picking my pull list up for the month and I think the Funko Pops for the movie spoiled some stuff for me as I've been largely in the dark for this movie save the trailers, so if possible a quick yes/no to below:
Do they power up Billy's family to be their own Marvels?

It was fun in all the right ways. As dower and depressing as BvS was, Shazam is a fun and light hearted.

Just got out of a 4:00 showing myself.
All in all, I found it enjoyable and was very entertained. But then, I'm very easily amused, so maybe take that with a grain of salt.

    Stinger spoiler question
    Who was the caterpillar?
I'm pretty sure it was the caterpillar that escaped from OG Shazaam's lair, and I'm sure that if I were a bigger DC fanboy I'd know it right off, but I'm drawing a blank here. I thought it was an Alice in Wonderland reference when the camera panned over it the first time, but now I'm pretty sure I missed something because of my lack of DC knowledge.

I'll be turning in my nerd card in the morning.

God this movie was so good.
I've been thinking about the convenience store scene all day and chuckling to myself. Everything about the scene was so perfect. From the setup to the payoff. I especially liked the beer spit-take followed by them walking out with sodas, candy and snacks. It was exactly how I as a 15 year old would have acted. I would say it's my favorite scene in the entire movie.

This is the only comic movie I really care about this year so I've got hopes especially after how much I loved Aquaman.

I'm super excited about shazam, wondering if I can take my 5 year old to a matinee, but, it's probably a bit too violent.

This might be ok for a 5 year old. There might be some swearing but I don't think the action was to violent or scary. It's a Superman movie that is goofy and funny instead of dark and gritty.

If you're ok with some harsh language I think it would be ok for a 5 year old. It was actually less violent than many of the animated movies Shazam has shown up in. I think it's actually less scary than Aquaman.

Always liked the Big Red Cheese so I'm hoping I'll enjoy this. Not a fan of what John's did to the character though so I'm wary on what material they use

The nu52 Shazam origin with Gary Frank was a little too try hard but the new series that launched seems to be trying to smooth it out a bit, Billy's more likable and it's much more Goonies so far (sort of feels like Johns knows he's going to hit a personality reset with everyone becuase of Doomsday Clock so people don't have to do the dew so much anymore). Plus Eaglesham on art makes it feel like the old JSA stuff run.

Saw this again last night and it's a bit better upon second viewing with a better crowd. The beginning still lags a bit, but the movie is just a lot of fun.

Can we get the chemicals in. 'Cause anything's better than this.

Oh man this is out already? I'm looking forward to seeing this. If I had to think of a current actor to play a 14 year-old ion a man's body, zach levy would be my first choice by a long shot.

I'll give it a week or two and catch a matinee, my particular 5 year old is still not excellent at sitting still ;)

Saw this last night and thought it was excellent.

DC live action movies - even the better ones - seem to have a really hard time landing an ending. Like, I really enjoyed Wonder Woman but the final boss battle was pretty forgettable and I don't even remember how the film ends. Shazam had a startlingly fun and memorable ending.

If this Wonder Woman and Shazam had come out 10 years ago I'd have been jazzed for an ongoing Justice League film franchise.

It's pretty good, and has an actual arc instead of one you need a twitter feed attempting to draw meaning out of it.
The actors were decent, and it went pretty dark sometimes. The Sins all stood together looked great, less so when moving, and it's a shame they abandoned all personality for them. The teasing Envy out was also a bit contrived but eh. It was a cool moment when he shared his powers with the other kids, though they kind of came across ironically like the Warriors Three, none really interesting on their own except the purple one. Maybe says a lot I can't remember any of their names outside of Mary and Freddy. Plus you've got the seven sins and don't actually have them induce any sinning, they just murder people.

The boardroom scene was probably the villain highlight, the way he hurled his brother out the window was stunning, but he kind of faltered a lot after that.

I enjoyed it, I think they maybe made the wrong choice with the suit, but it was OK.

Oh, one question for those who saw the movie:
Did anyone else get the feeling that they were going to do an R. Kelly "I Believe I Can Fly" joke, and then the recent news caught up with them?

Maybe. At the same time it's probably outside his age group, I dont recall him knowing obscure 80s and 90s references.

He’s played at least three for the DC

    - Dr. Sivana Sr
    - Lionel Luther
    - The Riddler

    Don't forget The Floronic Man!

Also, one minor issue with the movie:
When his birth-mom is like "I was only seventeen..."

The flashback of Billy getting lost would have had a lot more impact if his mom had been played by a teenager. Someone who looked like they were "too young", y'know?

Oh, and outside of a couple Philadelphia landmark scenes, that was unmistakably Toronto. Which is always a little weird/neat to watch.

This movie was WAY better than I was expecting.

It felt like one of those child adventure comedies from the 80s/90s era, like The Goonies.

As a non-comic book fan who didn't know much about the Shazam IP, final act spoilers:
The other members of the family getting their own Shazam powers took me by MEGA surprise.

I basically had a smile on my face for the rest of the movie, standouts being any time Darla and Eugene were on screen.
