It's a decent move doing it today, as it gets huge traffic with people looking for the list of fools.
Stack Overflow went 90's for today. Your cursor leaves a sparkle trail, theres a big unicorn on the page, the background is either a bunch of pink or black tiles with a bad SO logo, and the top of the page has a banner with 90's website text that scrolls

Pranks require the reaction of the victim to "make the joke"
And the audience laughs at the victim
I mean, if the victim is a bad person, that's ok, I guess?
But most of the pranks I have seen are punching downwards types of jokes
I think pranks can be funny if, if, the person being pranked also laughs about them afterwards. That's a hard line to walk and thus most pranks are just mean.

I used to really enjoy Think Geek’s April Fools gags, but for the past bunch of years it has felt less like “here are some jokes” and more like a free focus group test of “here are some weird things, which one should we actually make?”... and the jokes aren’t as good when you’re limited to things you can actually make.

I will say I respect the ThinkGeek approach because they're just treating it as a fun way to market test novelty items that their customer base might actually want. That's at least something I expect of companies already.

I prefer the "we're just doing something silly today" April Fools content, like the 90s thing Stack Overflow is doing
or World of Tanks/Warships, which add a new special game mode every April 1st
I love the April fools prank where everyone in my village celebrates me as king of the day and I drink the brewers finest ale and eat the butchers finest cuts and then at sunset I'm burnt alive
