Huh, it's been a good while since I've had no clue what game the comic was about.
I haven't played it yet, but I'd assume this is about Darksiders 3, just based on my experience with the prior two and the fact that they said Gabe recently went back to it.
Yeah, if you've ever played a modern Zelda, Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed, Dark Souls, or similar open world adventure game, this sort of thing happens a lot.
Wasn't the recent darksiders associated with a company that did PR work on 8chan?
Yes. For some reason they thought it would be a good idea to host an AMA on 8chan and quickly realized it was a very, very stupid decision.
They claim they didn't know it was a blacklisted site or about it's history, but I don't necessarily buy it. On it's surface it looks innocuous enough (after all, at it's foundation it's just an image hosting platform/forum), but the tiniest bit of research will tell you all you need to know.
Yeah, the basic context is thus: Gabe tried to play Darksiders 3 when it came out. He brickwalled against the difficulty of the game. Then Gabe played Sekiro. Then Gabe went back to Darksiders, a new man, forged in the fires of a FromSoft game, and found that Darksiders 3's difficulty was no longer a brick wall.
Also, for additional context, we have this comic from just a short while ago:

So now I have questions about Darksiders...
Firstly what the heck kind of horseman is the main character supposed to be? (googles) Fury?? What Revelation have they been reading?
Secondly, this comic makes Darksiders sound more like a Metroidvania...is it actually like a true 3d Metroidvania with backtracking and optional order of exploration or is it more like a Zelda?

Its definitely more of a Zelda. The order of exploration is pretty set; you can free roam back to earlier zones with your new powers to find more collectibles and the like. But each "dungeon" is basically crafted to assume you have the prior upgrades to get its upgrade which will be used for the 2nd half of the dungeon and culminate in a boss fight.

Look, do you know how hard it is to make Famine into an action game character? They needed to go in a different direction here.

Something you've got to understand about Darksiders is that the entire setting is basically what 13 year old boys draw in the margin of their schoolbooks. It's over the top awesome cool things dialed up to ridiculous dumb nonsense, using vaguely christian mythological elements combined with basically as many other mythological elements as can be crammed in there, loaded with gore and oversized weapons. There are zero elements of this setting that are not in some way trying to be cool, and that utterly sincere dedication to edgy teenager dumbcool is why I love it.
That's why she's called Fury. Cuz Fury is a cool word.

If we had smell-o-vision, Darksider games would smell like Axe body spray.

Learning that the winged monstrosity you tore apart was named 'Dan' a little less so.

I would play a game about making people hungry. It would be like a reverse Sneak King.
The Sims?
