So there's this tiny indy movie coming out soon some of you might have heard of.
Very low key stuff. 10 years of movies about people in funny costumes punching each other has led to this, another enormous paycheck for RDJ. Spoilers in tags until it goes on general release so don't go farting a bunch of stuff from reddit into the thread. When it's released we'll go with open spoilers and you can disparage or extol the virtues of the movie to your heart's content. Until then this thread is for, I dunno, hype?
Obviously if you've seen the film already keep your actual movie talk in spoilers.
I forgot it's Easter holiday time still, so I only got around to booking this morning. The lunchtime IMAX 3D screening on Thursday is nearly full at my local cinema. For Infinity War there were maybe 25 people at the equivalent screening.
I'm guessing most of the OG Avengers will be done with the franchise in one way or another after this movie, which is fine by me. RDJ is getting on and the others are probably a bit tired of exhausting action movies even if the paychecks are probably pretty good now. That last point probably encourages Marvel to replace them, keeping the budgets down.
I'll miss Chris Evans as Cap most, I think, but yeah, seven movies is plenty.
It is so weird living in a world where an Avengers movie is looking likely to be the pop culture event of the decade and the biggest movie of all time. I started reading them in the Roger Stern/John Buscema era when they were very much second fiddle to the X-Men books. They felt old school and hokey in a way that Chris Claremont's teams didn't, and 95% of them had zero recognition outside of the shrinking readership.
And now they rule the world!
The first Avengers story I read was Heavy Metal, in which the Super-Adaptoid uses abandoned robots to invade Hydro-Base (see what I mean about hokey - their HQ is called Hydro-Base) and summon Kubik, whose cosmic cube power he copies to become incredibly powerful. Cap defeats him by, essentially, daring him to experience death.
What was your first Avengers story? Was it one of the movies? An ancient, crumbling comic printed on that garbage newspaper stock with dot colouring and superfluous thought balloons? A video game with a barely legible storyline?

I always liked Marvel comics growing up, but I thought the Avengers were just a bit... shit, really. Spider-Man? The X-Men? Hell yes, they were awesome. But the old school Avengers, with characters like Giant Man, Iron Man, and (worst of all) Captain America just seemed fundamentally lame. Who cared about them? Disassembled and The New Avengers back in 2005 or so caught my attention a bit just thanks to the attempt to shake up their status quo, but they were still never going to rate highly on my list of favourite comic characters.
Imagine my surprise when the MCU arrived and turned them into a pop culture phenomenon. Like, it would have been unimaginable to me fifteen or twenty years ago that Marvel might have this hugely successful film franchise which covers multiple IPs... and doesn't have Wolverine in it at all.

My only exposure to the Avengers prior to the MCU was through Captain America and the Avengers on NES and through parody comics in a Mad-like magazine.

Most of the tickets were sold out almost immediately when they opened up for sales. I'm going to see it on Saturday morning at 8:00am, that's what was available at the time. I'm going to wake up on Saturday, my day off, as if I were going to work in order to see this movie opening weekend.

These movies have been a lot of fun but the CA movies hit home the hardest, for a lot of reasons.
The bed convo in TWS was a big point because I've felt it. Being out in the field for months, sleeping in the back of comms trucks or on rock hard cots and then coming home to a pillowy bed were some of the worst nights of sleep I've ever had.
I'll miss em, but hey 22 movies ain't too shabby.

I'm sure there will be some that stay on. Even if it's cameo roles more than anything else.
There's a Black Widow movie out next year, apparently. I was thinking more of the ones that have done the Avengers and three of their own movies as well. Plus Hawkguy because he's been looking to retire since Ultron.

Hemsworth is staying I know that. He loves everything about the MCU and I can't really see RDJ -not- staying on in some capacity unless Tony bites it at the end. After getting her own movie I'd be surprised if ScarJo doesn't also stay on in some fashion. Maybe a new Nick Fury sort of character.
Ignoring meta stuff, I'd honestly be completely fine with any of the original Avengers dying in this. They all feel like they could plausibly be at the end of their narrative.
Hell, of every character in that poster in the OP, the only one who I feel absolutely 100% confident that they'll survive is Carol.
My nearest Alamo Drafthouse added a bunch more screenings of Endgame! I just got a ticket for friday afternoon at 12:40 in the dead center of the auditorium, the perfect distance back from the screen.
My hype level was high before, but I'm currently vibrating with hype! I was thinking I would have to wait until monday to see it since only front row seats were available.

Got 3D tickets for Thursday at 9:30PM near the dead center of the theater, I'm now officially on media blackout for Endgame, will see everyone on the other side.

It won't be hard to keep that discussion to myself for a week, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed some asshole doesn't throw a meme spoiling the end at them, even unintentionally.
There are plenty of shits out there who get off on inflicting spoilers upon those who don't want them, but I find ignorant 'friendly fire' to be just as bad, if not worse.
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!
My wife got us tickets up see it Saturday morning before I even realized tickets had gone on sale, because she is the best wife. So I only have a couple days of spoiler dodging before I get to watch The Great Undustening.
I submitted an entry to Lego Ideas, and if 10,000 people support me, it'll be turned into an actual Lego set!If you'd like to see and support my submission, follow this link.
My local theater added some showings and I could totally get a good seat in about the middle of the back row at 6pm Thursday...but I already have tickets to see this Saturday with my son.
I could go to both, but I think I will resist temptation and experience it for the first time with the boy.
I’ve said this before, and I truly mean it, but if they can really stick the landing with Endgame (and it looks like they might from some of the first reactions). I feel that Marvel/Disney deserve some sort of special achievement Oscar for what they’ve done, similar to what the academy did with Snow White.

The reactions to Endgame are beyond gushing. I don't think I've ever seen this many people describe a movie in the ways that I'm reading.
My hype meter is maxed out and its crazy to think that the movie might even surpass that hype.

I completely agree. This feels like the cinematic equivalent of the moon landing. What Marvel/Disney have done in 11 years and 22 movies is an achievement on a level never seen before in Hollywood
It didn't quite work out to pair up with a bunch of friends and get tickets, not for Thursday at 6pm anyway. So I bought a solo ticket for 6pm at our local food-and-beer theater, in the upper third of rows, smack dab in the middle. I'll be between two strangers so hopefully they're cool; I'm not a movie talker or anything but this is definitely going to be a look-at-your-neighbors-and-react-together kind of experience.
I'll probably try to see it again over the weekend, this time with some fellows. I'm 100% certain the first viewing is going to be at best 90% experienced, what with the reactions of a full theater plus servers moving around.
I’m sure it’ll be enjoyable and the twenty movie shared universe is a significant accomplishment but I will haul back on the reins before I start comparing it to the moon landing or something.

Especially since the Apollo Program cost 23.5 billion dollars (in 50s-70s bucks) and the Marvel Cinematic universe has only cost something like 4 billion.

Yeah, the moon landing comparisons are silly.
The proper comparison is to the resurrection of Christ.

P sure the original comics Civil War came out before the first Iron Man, right? I'm sure I had dabbled here and there, but that's the first Avengers story I remember being really into.

Oddly enough the first Avengers story I remember reading was the Infinity Gauntlet saga.
The original one where the premise basically seemed to be "I'm Jim Starlin and I hate most of these characters so 'poof' now I don't have to deal with them. Now I can write all the characters I made plus one or two that I don't think are terrible."
My favorite part of that nowadays is Iron Man getting no lines and being decapitated off panel by Thanos' Canadian girlfriend.
Although I still hope they include this moment in Endgame:

Its hard, I don't want any spoilers at all but I would love two things from people who have seen it. How much of the trailers have been misleading and a possible timeframe for a decent moment to take a pee...
Can we get the chemicals in. 'Cause anything's better than this.
