I remember From saying it's the evolution of Dark Souls.
It wouldn't surprise me if they were using other entire games like Bloodborne and Sekiro to flesh out new playstyles.
I think it's obvious they were. When you consider how much more aggressive Bloodborne plays to Dark Souls, and how much they went toward a CAG Sekiro went. I see the culmination of a lot of that brought back in to a dark fantasy world with that trailer.
Which I'll say had way, way more than I expected to see.
looks amazing and i will cherish every moment of playing and cry when it's over but after Sekiro and Bloodborne kinda dissapointing how much it reminds me of dark souls aesthetically
I think Iron Pineapple said it best, they basically seem to have made Dark Souls 4, Bloodborne 2, and Sekiro 2 all at once in the same game.
Honestly, yeah.
This looks like they'e taken everything they've learned from Souls and Blood and Sekiro and blended it in to a single game.
God, I need this so much.

And now we wait for 400,000 videos on Youtube about how Elden Ring is going to be bad, actually.

Negativity sells. There are several YouTube channels I won't watch videos from because they basically peddle constant negativity and parade it as "being real" or "just telling the truth". It's fine to have a negative opinion of things, but when the only opinion a channel seems to espouse is a negative one and every thing is a slight toward the "gamer" it gets tired...but it sells. Big clicks.
Not a single character in the trailer called the PC "'arnished" which is, of course, a necessity. I'll admit - some characters in the Dark Souls series pronounced Hollow as "Hollow" with the audible H but the biggest feature in the Dark Souls trilogy of course is that some characters pronounced it as "'ollow" with an accent and if there are no characters that call you the "'arnished" I just won't have it.
I hadn't been following this, but looking at this trailer... you know, I admit, I had assumed From had closed the Souls series because they felt like trying to do something different, but this is Souls as balls. Like half the shots in this trailer would have been entirely at home in a straight up Dark Souls 2 scene reel.
Which, I mean, I like Dark Souls, so hey, I'm game, but this does rather seem to be very much Dark Souls 4, just the Undead are Tarnished now.

I guess Miyazaki has said that he considers this a natural evolution of the Souls games.

I think it's kind of a brilliant content strategy really. Try some weird, maybe off the beaten path stuff, in off shoot series like Sekiro and Bloodborne...but always have something linked to your dark fantasy roots bubbling away, that you can sprinkle the learning from those other games in to.
Looks good. We can already see the same vague storytelling in the "tarnished. . ." nonsense but the gameplay and aesthetic have me sold - as I knew it would.
As for the open world, I hope we aren't going to get stretches of nothing and that this openness gives them more room for storytelling (SEKIRO I think was the best of their storytelling as it had a straightforward story to play off of).

Slapping on the Elden Ring moniker instead of DS4 is for a few reasons I think.
One is it kills the ghost of the past and what people associate with Dark Souls/what they consider Dark Souls to be.
It’s design kind of notably differs from the Souls games as much as it takes from them. Those boss designs (including the large what looked like cat man and the turtle with the bell) were fucking crazy. Also, From has a unique graphical style that they continue to refine and improve, and it’s never better than when they do medieval fantasy. Their armor designs are just exquisitely detailed and unique.
To be honest I wanted to see a game that DS3 came within smelling distance of and this looks to be it.
Bloodborne combat is okay but I definitely don't want more Sekiro combat. Specifically the very high reliance on mandatory parry timing. I'll be happy as long as this game has a tank build.

It's kind of interesting that a lot of the character and armor designs seem most reminiscent of Dark Souls 2, but that could just be due to the fact that DS2 was the most focused on more human or realistic enemies and the world of Elden Ring is less fantasy and horror focused than DS1 and DS3 were.

I think it's also important to move on from Dark Souls because so much of what makes FromSoft games great is discovering the world. There's not much left you can do with the mythology of Dark Souls after everything was mashed into a fine paste in Dark Souls 3.
Yeah my initial reaction is that this is dark souls 3 on some serious steroids and I am 100% okay with that.
Now give us the next armored core game you cowards.
The fact there’s dedicated stealth mechanics kinda changes the game a LOT. They also mention weapon move sets, magic, and “skills”.
And it’s confirmed we have our poison swamp.

The giant red haired woman with the mechanical arm looks super neat. I'm looking forward to seeing how diverse the armor and weapon sets are and what the customization options are like, I mean for one the horse of the character they follow for most of it has goat horns and the like, I wonder how much of your mounts' look is changeable, or if it's fixed. Also Werewolf knight looks cool.

Many of the original Armored Core games had a secret Human PLUS mode, which let a player with a ton of debt volunteer to be experimentally turned into a cyborg and restart the game. The gameplay result was getting a ton of advantages (better boosting, not having to kneel to fire shoulder cannons, built-in awesome radar, etc).
That would be a pretty awesome element to build an AC game from. Make it so that your AC will restore itself to a minimum state after being destroyed, strip parts from enemies, lose parts when you die. Could even add a NG+ where each level strips you of Human PLUS abilities and reverts to being more and more human.

Cant wait.
Make sure too that all the bosses have three phases and you need to start over from the beginning when you die.
Start over from the beginning of the game

The werewolf bit has me intrigued.
A lot of the armor designs are starting to look a bit nordic to me as opposed to the more Southern european styles they had in the souls series.
it doesn't seem possible

It did look like there was a pretty big emphasis on magic knight shenanigans, so I'm hopeful.
