I just pulled a Moss and dropped my iPhone 6 in to the toilet. While I was fond of it, the Apple price tag has me looking at other options. The Pixel 3a is intriguing to me for this reason, but I'm curious about what else is out there for not exorbitant prices.
I already know about Google Fi and if my wife also liked one of the eligible phones too we'd jump ship.
Edit: I am going to deeply, deeply miss my headphone jack.

I have been looking into the pixel 3a myself, I have mixed feelings though since I have a good amount spent on iOS apps.
Husband and I both got Xiaomi 8 Lites and they are very good. Had no problems whatsoever and it was an easy transition to android. 200-300 bucks for the same features as an iphone X is a pretty good deal.

I have a Galaxy S8+ and it's been great to use and also has a headphone jack
My only real complaint with it is pretty much the entire phone body being glass but I had a case on it within 2 days so.

The Pixel 3a actually does have a headphone jack, unlike the regular 3. Bizarre, I know, but a welcome addition. The 3a has more or less become the default budget recommendation but it has some weaknesses (no expandable storage, no water resistance rating, no wireless charging, stuff like that). It's still an excellent phone with the best camera around today.
I have an LG V30, which is a nearly two year old model but can be had for cheap now. It still impresses me even now, honestly, and it has one of the best headphone jacks you can get (bolstered by a quad DAC). LG's offerings since then have dropped off the radar compared to the likes of Pixel, Samsung and OnePlus, but I for one would still consider them.
I moved from an iPhone (an ageing 4S) to Android several years ago partially for the same reason - the expense of iPhones - and, while I won't say it was the easiest adjustment ever, it is perfectly do-able. It's probably easier now.
The Android thread in Moe's is another good place to get non-iPhone suggestions.
Pixel call screening is also pretty awesome. Nice middle ground between "I never answer any call not in contacts" and having time wasted by telemarketers.
Edit: I am going to deeply, deeply miss my headphone jack.
Take a look at the LG V30. It has pretty much everything ie. fast, good screen, good cameras, wireless charging, water safe, good battery and a headphone jack with the internals to really make it something special.
It is not a brand new model so I think it can be found for $300 or so, but pretty new and I certainly love mine. And it surprisingly sturdy also - I accidentally tested mine by running it over with my car, lost of small chips on the backside but everything else is fine including the screen, the cameras and the fingerprint sensor (which btw. is located in the perfect spot)
Pixel 3 had a much better release and overall longer term reception than the Pixel 2. In addition, it recently got a price cut that brings it closer to what it should probably have been priced to begin with. I purchased a Pixel XL to replace my Nexus 5X and was intent on using it for a while, until I found a good deal on the Pixel 3. I don't regret that decision in the least.
Now that the Pixel 4 has been teased by Google (4 months ahead of release, no less), expect the secondary market to start to heat up for Pixel 3's.
Also the OnePlus 7 is getting good reviews since its release in May 2019.
Just remember Pixel is the first phone to receive the newest android version. Android = google, pixel = google.
This is bad when apps need to update to support that version so don't update it too early (if it lets you delay it) or you'll be stuck with a bunch of broken apps until they catch up.
I'm partial to the Samsung Galaxy S line of phones and have never owned a pixel.
I've got a Samsung Galaxy S7 currently. I think the notch camera in the Samsung Galaxy S10 is the worst idea ever...

Stereophile review of the LG V30 audio quality
