Old thread hit the page cap. Guess it's up to me to start a new one. But with what?
Well, Halloween is coming up... soon enough. How about something scary?
Too intense? Maybe something from the recently-released IDW doin-off comic Mini-series
Tangle & Whisper will be more to your liking?
(An "Issue 0" preview can be had for free
here.)
Still no good? Well, Team Sonic Racing came out a couple of months ago, and besides being a fun, more budget-priced Racing game with a unique twist, it also gave us this:

It's weird thinking about how it's been almost as long since Sonic 2006 as it's been between the first Sonic and Sonic 2006.
I don't know OK KO from the OK Corral, but I hear this ep was pretty good?

Sega is bad and then sometimes figures it out. Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza... they are learning how to sell to someone outside Japan slowly... perhaps with the help of Atlus.
It is weird how much they are shitting the bed with their flagship series though. You would think that would be the most important to get right, but we've seen other companies do worse (Square Enix).
To be fair Sonic's a bit of a tough nut to crack, since the type of game fans expect from Sonic isn't really anything made by the competition. There's simply nothing to improve or iterate on.
That said they managed to drop the ball on everything in Forces, including the music. Even the music in Sonic 2006 was pretty good, but the stuff in Forces was crap. Even from musicians they've used before!
I wonder if, based on the video, Sega's still focus-testing and second-guessing what they think will sell, rather than just putting out a good game.
SEGA is better not when viewed as a singular entity, but more as the gestalt of individual moving pieces that it is.
Probably true of any company, but I feel like SEGA especially so.
Also, despite an enormous list of issues with Sonic Forces, I still managed to enjoy myself throughout-- especially the music.

I don't think Forces cared about making sense
It was absolutely filled to the brim with references to past Sonic media.

This video leaves out that the villain (voiced by Jim Cummings, who also voiced Robotnik in Sonic SatAM) got the Master Emerald by tricking Knuckles off-screen. Also, parts of the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog theme play throughout the episode.
Outside of this specific episode, the show often simplifies hands to balls as inspired by the opening animation of Sonic CD (creator Ian Jones Quartey confirmed the inspiration).
The OK KO crew loves their homages, references, and deep cuts. For example, they had a crossover episode with Steven Universe, Ben 10, and Teen Titans Go set in the "CN City" used for interstitial branding from 2004 to 2007.
And for the love of God, there's nothing wrong with a Single-Player game. Not everything has to have Co-Op!

Co-op's been in the Sonic DNA since the second game, it's the only reason Tails even exists.
Tails exists because everything is better with foxes.
Chicken coops aren't, from my experience.
The way they explain it they really seem to have been give free reign

I'm glad the Boom cartoon worked out, but the free reign strategy also gave us the movie.
Not always. The Pokemon Company had extremely tight control over the designs in Detective Pikachu, to the point they insisted all models had to be at the same scale as the games. Hell, they went so far as to insist that Pokemon never wear clothes, it's always their skin, which forced the studio to redesign pokes like Machamp and Mr. Mime. I suspect Sega could have had more control over Sonic's design, but for whatever reason they didn't.
Edit: I remember Disney had to jump through a lot of hoops for Wreck-It-Ralph too. The director mentioned Nintendo and Sega kept pushing for Bowser and Dr. Eggman to be bigger and more imposing.

But yeah with the whole "adventure" thing they really are chasing down some of that 3D Sonic legacy.
But holy cow did they double down on it for FP2, I really hope the gameplay is innovated to match.
