Just wondering what i need to do to ensure that all the ports on my router are open. I own a Belkin 54g wireless router with the latest update of the standard firmware.
I want to check that all the ports are open because ever since i upgraded to this, my sophos anti virus hasnt been able to update.
Also is it safe to have all the ports on your router open all the time?
You would only want, and need, the ports that are being used by programs you want to function to be open.
To change settings on specific ports, you need to access the router from your computer. To do this, open your web browser and type in 192.168.2.1 into the address box. I think this is the default address for your router, but I'm not sure. I'm not personally familiar with their user interface, but once you've accessed it, you should see a "port forwarding" tab or menu item somewhere. For my Linksys DSL router it's under a tab called "Applications & Gaming," if that helps.
