Disabling Windows Media Player under Vista

Here's the deal, I hate windows media player with a passion.

Any media playing I do with one of three apps Media Player Classic, VLC & Winamp.

I've hidden WMP however whenever I connect any USB flash drive it always starts up in the background and stays resident regardless (wmplayer.exe) and the following REALLY ANNOYING window pops up every single goddamn time.

I accept that for streaming videos i'll use windows media (in Firefox) etc. But I see zero reason for the damn program to be wasting memory, cpu cycles and that damn window appearing every time.

Does anyone know how to disable it from 1. Opening that really annoying window everytime I connect a flashdrive and 2. stopping wmplayer.exe from even starting whenever I connect any flash drive.

At the moment my only thought has been going into gpedit.msc and making it a program that is not allowed to be run. But I don't think that'd stop the annoying window from appearing and doing that might mess up video playing in Firefox.

Try going to "Default Programs" on the start menu. Try messing around in "Change AutoPlay settings" and "Set your Default Programs".

    It won't let me.

Even though i'm an administrator, so I thought.. we'll see about that! Went to security permissions to add myself with full control and it came up with this:

EDIT: Scratch that, I made myself the owner of the file and then added myself to the permissions with full control then renamed the file to wmplayer.exe-FOAD.

Also, I tried the Default Programs thing dsplaisted.. no joy.

I'm now saying the rename provisionally works. We'll see how it handles video etc in a browser. Anyone got a url with windows media video to hand?
