Watched the second episode of this Bofuri show (the one about maxing out her defense) and I'm kinda liking it? It still has some of those tropes that bug me like "who the hell would design a broken ass game like this" and "literally no one else in the world has thought to do this?" but if you can get past that, there's actually a pretty fun show here.
I am getting a kick out of the protagonist just eating everything in hopes of getting different skills/resistances/immunities. Also, if you can't be bothered to invest in agility, just use your friend as a mount!
This game does need some major PvP balancing though.
It's basically junk food, but that doesn't mean I have a problem with it.
...which means its totally going to swerve into the usual issues probably but...
I view Bofuri as a cute girls do cute things show just instead of school club stuff she is playing a VRMMO and breaks it's balance like Bane broke Batman's back all while being unaware of to how abnormal she is and that she has became a celebrity on message boards.

Apparently the villians are the game devs and sone of this is addressed

I know nothing about this show outside of the 2 episodes I watched and I'm thinking it's a strong possibility (but not a serious one).
"Oh no! Our grossly incompetent dev team did something that only the players can fix."
Here's the voice actresses for the four main characters in Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life? dancing to the opening song (which they are also the singers of):
Three new series in Jump with the first one starting this week.
Undead+Unluck (New Series by Tozuka Yoshifumi) - RAW of the oneshot is floating around. Can't tell a whole lot about it, though. Doesn't seem super well regarded
Mashle (New Series by Koumoto Hajime) - can't seem to find details on this?
Majo no Moribito (New Series by Sakano Asashi) - author was, I think, an assistant on Black Clover.
They're a bit under-capacity right now, so this doesn't necessarily mean cancellations, but if they were, the most likely axes are Mitama Security and Samurai 8.
Undead + Unluck and mentioning a one-shot made me think it was Unlucky Boy, Undead Girl but apparently this is an entirely different series (also in this one the boy is undead and the girl is unlucky I guess?).
ID: Invaded did follow up on my prediction and now I’m all in.....with apprehension.
MC is indeed a Moriarty lite. Collared mass bomber talks shit about his daughter while in their special Hannibal Lecter cells, and he proceeds to talk him into a bad end.
While I do want this MC to be an irredeemable murder man posing as a detective in the case sequences, I really hope they don’t lean in too hard into “ OH ITS ONLY HIS TRAGIC BACKSTORY THAT MAKES HIM A MURDERER HE IS ACTUALLY REALLY NICE JAPANESE MAN WHO ONLY KILLS THE BADS”.
My only hope it doesn’t turnout that way is his Ex-partner, who is so far been the old school stand up dude thinks he’s a piece of shit, and not in the “I hate murderers” sort of way. here’s hoping
My wife and I just got back from seeing Weathering with You.
(Serious Ending Spoilers)
Wasn't sure if they were going to do a happy ending or a sad ending this time.
Then he manages to rescue her from the sky so I figure everything's going to be okay...but then it turns out they destroyed Tokyo. But I guess everyone's cool with it? Uh, okay.
Still enjoyed the movie, but Your Name was definitely better.

Im just going off the tv tropes page which is limited but apparently a nerf patch is a plot point

I'm not sure if it goes here or the movies thread, but I saw Weathering With You tonight.
It's good! It's not as good as Your Name, but those highs are hard to live up to and I can't really knock it for that.
I also saw this and liked it quite a bit. I'd like a spoiler discussion for those who did see it to discuss the ending and ultimate theming of the movie.
I tried the first episode of Bofuri. It's a Cute Girls doing Cute Things show, but for VRMMOs?
Yeah its not anything crazy.

You know what genre of anime I miss?
The ones where entire high school curriculums were dedicated to teaching students the art of fighting and said students would have rivalries with other schools and engage in fisticuffs.
Why these institutions existed was also never explained and everyone accepted it without question.
I mean My Hero is close but it isn't the same since their schools actually serve a purpose.

Also everyone attending the school practices their family's elite form of martial arts and the protagonist either can't fight at all or is heir to the super unstoppable style

Yeah pretty much. If you want a cute girl break a VRMMO with serious balance issue unaware to what is doing watch Bofuri. If you want SAO but without the misogynist harem aspect watch Dendrogram.
My favorite kind of unstoppable super power is the "character is only really good at one thing, but they are absurdly good at that one thing." Maybe because it allows a character to feel overpowered while also being somewhat grounded. Like, character was an obsessive weirdo who practiced at the one thing they had any aptitude at so they became absurdly good at it.
That being said, I also really loved Mob Psycho 100 which has a message that is basically the antithesis of that. "Be well rounded, do things outside of your comfort zone, being talented at any one thing regardless of what that thing is is ultimately of little importance to anyone else."
There's also the ever-popular super power of "able to keep getting back up--despite being seriously outclassed--until they eventually somehow become the winner."

the worst and one of the things that push me away from action content, because it's such a prevalent trope.

Offhand, the only case immediately coming to mind where I didn't mind it was Rokudou no Onna-tachi. Trying to figure out why, I guess it comes to a mixture of the following reasons:
Until a recent arc (like 150 chapters in), Rokudou had zero fighting ability whatsoever, but wasn't going to stand by and let his friends risk it all while he did nothing.
He also routinely got the shit kicked out of him for it, while his opponent isn't really injured but the fight stops for a different reason.
His ultimate goal is to make friends with everyone instead of fighting.

I think the best one for this was definitely 3x3 Eyes, the old 80s series. Dude's only power was insane regeneration, but he's otherwise just any random normal teenager. Unfortunately for him then his opponents are usually like ancient supernatural monsters who are perfectly capable of ripping him into bits.
A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.
Ok, watched Bofuri since it has MMOs and cute girls.
"I got no weapons what should I do? I know, going to eat the monster".
It fucking works.
Wait, what?
Apparently
Eating is a game mechanic she unintentionally abuses due to her defense buffs. Like they didnt intend for her to have poison immunity AND high enough damage resistance at her level to eat the boss

Honestly it feels like a case of "it works because she doesn't know it doesn't work".
Overall, it reminds me a bit of Overlord on that.
Ains got the super kill-fucking-everything-on-a-200-meters-diametre The Goal of All Life is Death spell by putting all his skills on necromancy and instant-kill spells, since the Devs put it on a hidden class, Eclipse, only available to players crazy enough to do that.

That game would be such a clusterfuck since you can upload your own art for NPC characters you make and you can fuckin loot PvP corpses.
