The adults in the game, Leon and Chairman Rose and what's her name becoming the professor, they're dealing with some real shit off to the side, some kind of recurring ecological catastrophe, but they tell you they're handling it and to focus on the gyms. And that's it. You don't even get to see what their thing IS let alone help with it. It's strange and evokes a weird feeling that I remember from being a kid, of half hearing news on TV about the gulf war or something, then going back to play with my toys. Maybe the story beats pay off later in the postgame? I dunno, it's very odd.
At the same time it also feels like a large amount of content was cut from the game to rush it out the door or because an executive found it unsuitable. There was even a cutscene that was implemented with random still photos, like Evangelion-running-out-of-budget style. That kind of dropped my jaw. There might be something to the narrative of troubled development here.
