Audiophiles? - Home audio jacks in new place - where do these go, what do?

So I have a couple of these in our living room and rec room, and I've never lived anywhere with wired sound:

I haven't found any other inputs or equipment or anything yet, but I'm still looking around. I know nothing about sound stuff at all. Can I make use of these in some way? Do I input sound into one set and plug speakers into the other sets and walla, sound? Is there no easy way to tell just by their existence? They look pretty new compared to the rest of the place, but like I said, I haven't found what I would interpret as an A/V cabinet or place the original sound system might have sat. Gonna keep opening closets.

Any ideas from the sound gurus?
