EDIT: The official website for the game just went live: http://www.atlus.com/operationdarkness/ - release date set for June 24th.

site_operationdarkness.jpg

So I just found out about this game today and I thought it looked pretty cool. Operation Darkness is a JRPG for the XBox 360 set in WW2. It was supposed to come out last year but was delayed and now has a vague 2007 TBA release date.

Here's the trailer. Lots of gameplay footage: http://www.success-corp.co.jp/software/xbox360/operation-darkness/download.html

From watching the trailer and guessing what the Japanese says based on my Chinese knowledge, I know that:

It takes place in an alternate reality Europe during WW2. Your goal is to assassinate Hitler. In addition to Nazi soldiers, you'll also be fighting monsters (skeletons and dragons were shown in the trailer). Vehicles like tanks and bomber planes are also useable.
Battles take place in large areas. Positioning is very important. However it doesn't look like a typical grid based Strategy/RPG.
Weapons such as sniper rifles, grenades, and rocket launchers were shown in the demo. Also some characters have the ability to use magic.

And here are some screenshots:

So I just noticed that there are some Operation Darkness themes (or gamerpics, I forget which) up on the US marketplace. Signs that someone is planning on bringing this game over to the US, perhaps?

I loved the description of it on 1up Yours, I think it was, a while back. Went something like this:

"So it starts out as this normal WW 2 strategy game, where you have your army with your footsoldiers and tanks and whatnot, fighting the nazis in some city environment. And it goes by normally for a while, and then when you've fought a bit suddenly your guys turn into fucking werewolves".

I'll tell you, my interest went from complete nil to "holy shit" in about a second.

For the lulz, go read the description of the game on the Xbox Live Marketplace. It's Engrish at its finest.

I don't remember the description itself, but I know the game claimed its genre was "genre."

More than that, Werewolves with BAZOOKAS, and then when you killed all the nazis on the level their commander raised them back up as zombies!
Here's Garnet Lee's TGS preview on the game.

Also from the gameplay videos (such as this one) on game trailers it looks like a pretty traditional SRPG.

So apparently Famitsu didn't like it. They gave it a score of 21 - 5,5,5,6. Problems they cited were overly high difficulty level, bad camera & map system, and dated graphics. On the other hand, I was reading the comments of someone who imported it and they said it was a fun if flawed game.

Play-Asia has this game listed as English/Japanese, but apparently only the menus are in English. :(

Didn't they give Blue Dragon something like 38/40? I wouldn't judge a game based on their review at all.

this appears to be somewhat against the grain, so my apologies in advance, but.. if there were not dragons, walking skeletons, magic and powerups in WWII, why the need to use WWII as a setting for a JRPG featuring dragons, walking skeletons, magic and powerups?

I don't know if the devs did it for this reason but there is a ton of crap out there about the germans and the occult.

So it's not that out there that someone would find it interesting and put a jrpg around some of that stuff.
