Can someone suggest some bands and artists for me to look up and listen to in the Pandora app?

I had a couple really decent playlists in Spotify, but I deleted the app

I'm on a bit of alt country thing at the moment, but rock, hip hop, butt rock, ummm...

What sort of alt-country is already on your radar? I don't wanna toss easy answers like Neko Case and Sturgill Simpson if you're already picking up what they're putting down

Thank you, I will check them out

I seem to have to some sort of brain fog now. Tyler Childers and Chris Stapleton aren't exactly alt, but they're in my head

Neko Case and Sturgill Simpson sound familiar,

I guess I should just accept the long covid brain fog and embrace lake dystopia and make lists on my phone

Okay, so in the alt country genre, you got the Old 97s (and by extension Rhett Miller solo), Caitlin Rose, Wilco, Lucero, The Watson Twins, The Influents, Neko Case, Green on Red, and Uncle Tupelo.

Some of that veers closer to country, some closer to punk, some closer to folk, but I’d lump it all into a general “Alt Country” banner.

    What is alt country

Bands that are somewhere between Country and some flavor of Rock and Roll.

This is solid example of the sound, but it’s a pretty wide net:

Rodney Crowell is a phenomenal country musician that I don't fully consider country even though I think he is legit a country musician. It's a bit of a weird distinction to make sometimes.

    Anyway, excellent singer/songwriter.

I saw him live like 10 years ago in a small venue, great show. After it was over, instead of going backstage with his band he hang out with the fans for a couple more hours signing autographs. He seemed really nice and approachable.

I've been listening to the song Teardrinker off the new Mastodon album like, A LOT. Unfortunately I think that's kind of the high point for me. After that it's Pushing the Tides as kind of the last song that feels unique before the rest of really starts to melt together and loses its distinctness.

Did you ever wonder what happens when whales die? When a whale gets older, it gets weaker until it's no longer able to surface and then it slowly sinks down into the water until it drowns and keeps sinking into the depths of the ocean until it gets to bottom of the sea. So somewhere out there right now, there's a whale struggling to swim to the surface and can't and it's slowly seeing the light fade away as it sinks into the void.

One of my favorite records recently got reissued and is finally available online again after being more or less gone from the internet for like 15 years. Some of the Young by the Influents is what you’d get if Paul Westerberg had decided to make one more great Replacements album, after a steady diet of punk rock and Tom Petty during their hiatus.

“Life and Life Only” is one of my desert island songs. Just as much “Achin’ to Be” as it is “Warning.”

22 years ago, the video for RATM's "Sleep Now in the Fire" debuted. I'm in middle school, Napster is a thing, and my brother and I are staying up way too late watching music videos on MTV:

The all female rock and metal scene in Japan is just obscene from a talent perspective. Rolling Quartz, Mary's Blood, Aldious, Band-Maid, Bridear, etc..., et alia... ad absurdum.

    Then there's Lovebites:

And I think Hizaki from Versailles and Jupiter (Japanese bands) should get honorary mention, though he just loves playing pretty princess dressup:

Late to the party, but I have some, uh...lesser known alt country recs for ya @DouglasDanger

going from probably most well known to least:

    Deer Tick
This album, War Elephant, has a few of my favorite songs ever on it.
    https://youtu.be/RSzvz8uar5k

    Scott H. Biram
Truck driver. One man band. Murder ballads and occasional metal growls.
    https://youtu.be/IkYXDpJ75Fc

This last one though... is very near and dear to my heart, and it has...67 views (it is a relatively recent upload, but still). This band is criminally unknown, but also often disliked by most people that do hear them, which is unfortunate because I love the hell out of these weirdos. I created an ebay account just to buy this album because its been out of print forever, and its not on any streaming services that I've checked.

Anyway, I present one of my favorite bands of all time, The Bitter Tears:

Bonus Bitter Tears including a photo of the band in their typical stage outfits:

I've talked about this before I think but Ballbreaker is an extremely underrated AC/DC album. They took their usual straight ahead, freight train riffs and really deconstructed them and mixed the pieces up into a very unique but still identifiable AC/DC album.

They are also extremely sleazy in this one as usual and I fucking love it.

Honey Roll over and lettuce on top

My brother years ago worked at a hotel AC/DC stayed at. Said the hallway of the floor they were on was full of pot smoke and his manager said under no circumstances are you to disturb them. The next morning in the fancy restaurant of the hotel, any time the band wanted service they would just pound on the table.

They are surprisingly sophisticated from a music theory standpoint. Angus loves throwing in unusual (from a blues based, pentatonic rock perspective) voice leads and modulations in non standard places and has a fondness for Mixolydian scales and lots of diatonic in his solos.

And committing crimes with said erections,, ranging from Peruvian neckties and blunt force trauma with the glans, to sophisticated lockpicking and/or knocking out hengepins from vault doors.

Yeah real talk if you ever sit down and actually try to learn an AC/DC song it can be surprisingly complex. Their foundation for building a song is fairly straightforward in that they pretty typically use a standard 1,4,5 scale but their execution of those notes is wildly different from song to song.

Like, they can make your typical E,A,D chord progression fucking complicated which is much more difficult than one might expect at first glance.

Also, there are about 5 AC/DC songs that always get the regular rotation by virtue of being major hits but they have a pretty big discography between both Bon Scott and Brian Johnson with a lot of diversity that gets overlooked because it's not from Back in Black.
