Probably about two hours before you actually do, if any of the people I have lived with are an indication

My dad would be the exception. Excluding times when he is mandated to be somewhere doing something that is not sleeping he goes to bed at 8pm, gets up at 5am and takes a 1-2 hour nap at 11am

Question is "when should one go to bed?" not "when do you go to bed?". So I am not required to answer when I actually go to bed!

Though I have been trying out napping/sleeping when I'm tired recently. Could be an unspoken new year's resolution, could be getting older, but it is pretty nice to have a Sunday avo nap. And honestly, 90% of the time I'm doing nothing useful/healthy/productive after 11pm anyway.

I really am one of those people more comfortable of being up at night. So I go to bed at 4 or 5 am.

It takes the average human 15 minutes to fall asleep?

From the time I turn out the lights until I actually fall asleep is usually around 45 to an hour. Maybe I should see someone about that.

About 3-4hrs after that point I will finally sleep

You should. I thought it was normal to take an hour to fall asleep, turns out I had a chronic illness and after being medicated, slept much much better!

Sleep is great, though. If you are sleepy, and you have the opportunity to sleep, you should sleep.

Tonight I stayed up later than I wanted to playing Car Mechanic Simulator 2018, though. Gotta replace one last steering knuckle and leaf spring u-bolt before I unlock the paint shop.

The idea of being in bed before 11pm is frightening and confusing to me. I'd just lie awake until midnight either way. In an ideal world, I'd sleep something like 2-9:30am and take a midafternoon nap every day. Day job being what it is, I usually do something like 12:45-7:15am on weeknights

As someone who often works a combination of 5:30am - 2:30pm, 10:00am - 7:00pm, and 2:00pm - 11:00pm shifts in the same week: my sleep schedule is non-existent. Throw the occasional 9:00pm - 6:00am overnight in there for good measure. Oh! And make sure I work that closing shift right before the mandatory 5:00am quarterly meetings!

Where's the 3rd shift option for feeling extremely tired and sleepy at 8pm, going to bed, waking up at 12:30am, falling back asleep at around 15 till 3 and then having your alarm go off at 4am only to lie there for a few minutes contemplating whether you should get up or just set yourself on fire?

    Because that one.

I go to bed at 9pm because I’m a teacher and have to get up early. I do read in bed for up to an hour before actually trying to sleep. Whether sleep arrives is a different matter.
