EDIT1:
Since there seems to be some confusion: This is not an MMO. This is not a Korean game brought over here. This is a for-fun game made by some folks at NCSoft that is a pure hack 'n slash Diablo type game. It has nothing in common with the myriad of Korean MMO's like Ragnorok Online and it's ilk. There are no furries, SD characters or anything like that. The fact that it's "free" doesn't link it to that type of game.
EDIT2:
If you're a subscriber to Fileplanet and have a Dungeon Runners account, you can get a free week of "Membership" to Dungeon Runners to see if it's worth the $5 a month for you. I guess the Fileplanet account doesn't have to be the paid one. Thanks Uriel.
EDIT3:
Added Forumer Character List at the bottom of this post.
Alright, listen up homps.
(I’m not going to clog bandwidth here for screenshots, go to the website below if you want to se what it looks like)
www.dungeonrunners.comDungeon RunnersWhat you need to know:It’s free.
No, not just free to play,
free. Well, ok, there’s a membership option, but I’ll get to that in a minute. There is zero cost to download and play the game to your hearts content for an unlimited amount of time and levels. This isn’t a trial, it’s the full damn game.
Wait, what’s this membership thing?
Well, if you so choose, you can pay a $5 a month to access “Membership” benefits. As listed on the official page these are:
Better Gear (I added this one)
- You have access to gear above the normal “Magic”(blue) gear. Members can use Rare Unique and Mystic gear. More on loot types later. Everyone can pick up all types of gear but only Members can equip this great stuff, non-members can still sell it for lots of cash.
Log-in queue priority
- When servers are full, there’s a line to get into the game, but as a member, you’ll skip straight to the front of the queue for easy access to Dungeon Runners whenever you want.
Bank Storage
- You’ll pick up a lot of loot in Dungeon Runners; some you’ll want to keep and some you’ll want to sell. There will come a point where your inventory is full and you have to start making that nasty decision of what to drop in order to make more room. Well, that moment will not arrive as quickly for members as it will for anybody else! (*NOTE* Your inventory is NOT bigger. I don’t know what this is referring to; but I’ll just go ahead and assume they’re talking about the fact that you can use Yellow, Purple and Rainbow Gear, so you’re not throwing as much out)
-Where a non-subscriber can only keep as much loot as will fill their inventory, a member gets a bank! This bank contains an additional 220 slots of storage space for members to access when they are in Town.
Stacking potions
-Dungeon Runners currently features two types of potions – one to restore health and one to restore mana (magical power). Both items are indispensable for the serious Dungeon Runner – or anyone that just likes ‘not dying’. Non-members will find that each potion takes up a valuable slot in their inventory, reducing the amount of space for loot. However, members will have the luxury of stacking potions, meaning that multiple potions will occupy one inventory slot, saving room for loot
*These in-game items are yours to use as long as you are a paying member. Should your membership lapse for any reason, you will no longer be able to use them. You can regain your ability to use them by reactivating your paid membership to Dungeon Runners through your PlayNC Master Account.
So that’s what you get. A bank, stacking potions, and access to a lot of good items. I played for 8 hours straight when I downloaded it last night, and at the end said “fuck it” and member’ed myself up. The gear upgrades I just happened to have in my inventory made me considerably stronger. That and not having half my inventory filled with healing potions made it worth it.
So, what if I don’t want to pay that fee?
Then don’t. I won’t lie, the Member gear is considerably better than the free player gear; it’s roughly like comparing Greens in WoW to Blues and Purples. Sometimes they’re
far better. And hopefully that’ll be the only time I invoke the name of WoW in this thread. Because this game isn’t anything like it.
Alright, sounds good, what is it like?
Think Diablo. There’s a whole lot of clickity click click in this game, and if dungeon crawlers like Diablo and it’s spawn of clones aren’t your bag, look elsewhere. The “depth” of play is somewhere between Diablo and Diablo 2. I’m comparing it to Diablo for a reason. The game makes no attempt at hiding the fact that most of it’s mechanics are blatantly stolen from the Diablo series. In fact, that was their entire point.
Wait, I already own Diablo, why would I bother with this?
Wait, did I forget to mention that it is
FREE? You can forgive a lot of things about a game when you don’t a pay a cent up front or down the road. Also, it’s a fun time. The NPC’s will bitch at you for bothering them, you’ll get quests to kill monsters “for fun!”, you can clothe yourself in lush Baby Seal Leather and more! For being a straight dungeon crawler, there’s a lot of personality in the game, and it is fun as hell if you enjoy that genre.
Sounds too good to be true! Where’s the catch?
I won’t lie. While the game went “live” on the 23rd, there are still a lot of bugs. You see seams in graphics, you’ll occasionally “whiff” 15 times in a row for no apparent reason, there isn’t a lot of depth to the game; so if you’re spoiled by games like Titans Quest and don’t think you can go back to a far more simple arcadey game, it might not be for you. For some odd reason there’s an overabundance of crossbows on enemies. The camera controls are a bit wonkey till you get used to them. Sometimes the game doesn’t register a special attack. You can only make one character per account (for now, more slots are being added in a future patch, though with the “classless” patch, this isn’t that big of a deal, more on that in a bit). So yeah, there’s drawbacks. It isn’t a game for everyone and no one is claiming it is. But since it’s totally free to play, there’s no good reason to not give it a shot.
Graphics
Felt the need to add in this section. If you look at the screenshots on the site (or play the game), you'll notice that the graphics aren't exactly Crysis. The game doesn't bother with any of the fancy pixel dodads and shader whatnots. It's pretty low PC intensive, so if you're computer isn't up to snuff for more modern games, you'll still run this game smooth as silk. That's not the say the graphics are
bad, they're good, particularly since the game is
free, and have a lot of style.
You got me, where can I get it?
Follow the instructions here:
http://www.dungeonrunners.com/join.html
to download and play the game.
Basic Game Information:Classes*:
(information here is what you start with, there’s more skills for each class)
Fighter:
Offensive Skills:
- Butcher - A savage melee attack with that increases your Attack Rating, deals additional melee damage to your target, and knocks them down.
- Righteous Stomp - A wave of holiness that knocks back any enemies within close proximity and deals divine damage over time to each.
Passive Skills:
- Way of the Roo - You were raised by a semi-domesticated pack of kangaroos that taught you the secret art of Kung Roo. Their teachings have provided you with an innate ability that gives you 25% increased speed with all melee weapons.
- Health Nut - You have spent more time in the gym than entire sports teams combined. You have the ideal human physique. The downside - you have a hard time reading your name, much less writing it. For every point of Endurance you gain almost 38 Hit Points. The endless focus on your body has deprived your brain of exercise. Every point assigned to Intellect will only give you 9 Mana
Ranger:
Offensive Skills:
- Poison Shot - A ranged attack that causes poison damage over time to the target. Requires a ranged weapon to use.
- Gaseous Blast - Emits a fetid cloud that causes poison damage over time to enemies within the proximity of rancid cloud.
Passive Skills:
- Trigger Happy - You have a nervous twitch with your trigger finger resulting from a “work-related” accident involving a branding iron, a penguin, and a large bucket of coffee beans. Your memory of the accident is hazy, but the twitch comes in handy with ranged weapons, giving you the innate ability of 25% increased speed with all ranged weapons.
- Mediocrity - Congratulations, you are average! You aren't great, but you don't suck either. No sense in rocking the boat and changing the status quo. You gain 12 Mana per Intellect point and 25 Health per Endurance point. Keep up the average work, and don't push yourself any harder than you have to.
Mage:
Offensive Skills:
- Fire Bolt - Shoots a bolt of fire at your enemies, causing intense fire damage.
- Shadow Lightning - Strikes a target with a powerful bolt of lightning, which leaps to up to 5 enemies and deals] shadow damage to each.
Passive Skills:
- Mental Prowess - Mommy dropped you on your head a lot less than the other kids. This has left you with a killer noggin! In other words, you have the innate ability to have 20% increased damage from all spells that you cast.
- Bookworm - You have spent most of your life in libraries reading on subjects ranging from thermodynamic entropy to increasing profitability for broccoli farmers below the Tropic of Unicorn
*The class you choose only effects your starting skills. The “classless” patch introduced a system in which you can learn any and all skills for all the classes. And you can respect at any time for a Gold fee. So one character could theoretically have access to everything, and a class change is only a respect away. Skills can cost a small fortune however, so it’s best to either focus on a basic class skills, or choose a nice hybrid and focus on that.
Combat:
Click on what you want to kill and kill it…
Ok, seriously:
If you select an enemy and hold the mouse button down (anywhere, doesn’t have to stay over the monster) you’ll continue to attack and follow that creature. At any time you can use any skills you have on your skill bar (up to 8 at a time) plus you can assign skills to your left and right mouse button for a total of 10 active skills.
And then you kill things. Really, this section doesn’t need to go on anymore. Anyone who’s played any dungeon crawler ever since Gauntlet knows how to kill things.
Skills:
Learning New Skills:
To learn new skills, the player must speak to a trainer or read a skill book. The trainers are located around the Waypoint in Townston, and skill books are dropped by monsters. Note that you can now buy Offensive and Passive Skills from any of the trainers, not just one associated with your original class.
Skill Books:
When you pick up a skill book it will be listed in your inventory.
- Right-click on a skill book in your inventory to learn the skill.
- If you read a skill book for a skill you don't yet have, you gain the skill. Each subsequent book read increases the power level and mana requirements of the skill.
Skill Trainers:
Lothar of the Mound People: Specializes in fighter skills, and talking tough.
Abel Tukahst: Specializes in mage skills. Huzzah!
Gwen of the Tree Folk: Specializes in ranger skills. Don’t mess with the hippie!
Skill Types & the Skill Bar:
There are Five types of Skills: Offensive, Traits, Self Buffs, Group Buffs, and Curses. You must drag Offensive, Self Buff, Group Buff, and Curse skills (clicking the right mouse button) to your skill bar (at the bottom of the screen) to prepare them. Each slot on the Skill Bar has a corresponding hot key - 1 through 5, and L and R for the mouse buttons. You activate a skill with the appropriate button (1-5 on the keyboard or the appropriate mouse button, or by left clicking the skill on the Skill Bar).
- Offensive - need to be dragged to the skill bar and used actively.
- Passive Skills - cannot be placed in the skill bar and are active all the time.*
- Self Buffs and Group Buffs - need to be dragged to the skill bar and used actively.
- Curses - Need to be dragged to the skill bar and used actively.
*Since the classless change, there seems to be some thought that passives actually have to be on your bar now. I haven’t tested this myself, so it’s up in the air ATM.
The “L” and “R” boxes link a Skill to the corresponding left and right mouse buttons. NOTE: Doing this overrides the basic attack functions of the left and right mouse keys as long as there is sufficient mana to power the Skill. If the character is out of mana, he or she will perform a normal attack instead.
Examples:
1. Athena’s character Kitsune is a Mage with the Fire Bolt Skill. If she drags it into the “R” box, Kitsune launches a Fire Bolt whenever Athena clicks the right mouse button in the direction of the mouse cursor since the Fire Bolt skill does not require a specific target, only a direction.
2. If Athena instead places Shadow Lightning in Kitsune’s “R” box, then she must “target” an enemy with the cursor and the click the Right Mouse button to activate the skill. If Kitsune does not have enough mana to cast Shadow Lightning or if she tries to cast it before it has finished the cool down phase, then Kitsune will attempt a standard physical attack.
I’ll leave Chat and Controls for the in-game help menus, since there’s no real reason to discuss it here. It’s pretty standard fare.
LOOT! WOO WHOO!
There are several different levels of item quality, from Normal to Mythic:
-
Normal (Grey) – This is displayed as a white item name.
-
Superior (Green) – This is a bit better than a normal item and is displayed as a green item name.
-
Magic (Blue) – This is a bit better than a superior item and is displayed as a blue item name.
-
Rare (Yellow) – This is a bit better than a magic item and is displayed as an yellow item name.
-
Unique (Purple) – This is a bit better than a rare item and is displayed as a purple item name.
- Mythic (Rainbow) – This is quite a bit better than a unique item and is displayed as a rainbow-colored item name. Sorry, I’m not going to color each letter to make it a rainbow. Deal with it.
Ok that wasn’t that exciting. Everything Yellow and up requires a membership to use. You can still pick it up and sell it for gobs of Gold.
Grouping:
Type "G" to open the Group window.
- Use “/invite <name>” to invite a player by name from anywhere within the game (where "<name>" without quotes or brackets is the character's name).
- You can now teleport to any member of your group by clicking the “Go To” button next to their name.
- Clicking Find Group makes your group Public, which means anyone else clicking on Find Group will join your group without you sending a personal invite.
- The group leader can reset all of the group’s instances by clicking on the “Reset Instances” button in the grouping UI. This teleports all group members back to Townston and will reset the dungeon for replay.
- Membership within your group will persist between disconnects of the client. This will allow you to more easily rejoin your group if you crash or get disconnected.
- Instances will not reset until 15 minutes after the last group member logs out (unless the group leader clicks “Reset Instances”). This allows players to reenter their instances if their client crashes or disconnects.
Group Looting:
- Each loot drop within the dungeon will be assigned to a group member in a round-robin fashion.
- Look at the top of the item tooltip to see who the item belongs to.
- Loot can only be picked up by its owner.
- Loot will not be generated for group members that exceed the group leader’s level by more than 5.
Matchmaking:
- Group leaders can open their group to allow other players to find them with the matchmaking system. Simply click the “Make Public” button in the Group UI.
- Any player can elect to automatically find a group. Simply click the “Find Group” button in the Group UI to begin the matchmaking process. If there are no groups, then any other players near your level that are also looking for a group will join you in a new group. In this situation the group leader is selected for you.
- The matchmaking system will only match players that are within 5 levels of each other.
- The matchmaking system tries to fill up groups before making new groups.
- Once a suitable group is found, an invitation is sent to you for acceptance.
- Players can use the “Go To” leader option to quickly teleport to the newly formed group.
THE END
Ok, not really. Any other information you could want is at the official site. For as easy to play as a game this is, this OP was probably too much, but hey, I figured if I was going to do it, I’d do it right.

The swords looks sweet in this game too!
Also, a demon named Karl holds your XP bar and makes faces at you while you play. How can you beat that?

Took me a while during the BETA for the game. Not sure how long it should take now that it's live.
EDIT: Also, if you have a plaync account already, you don't even need an e-mail verification, just go to the plaync store, "buy" the game and it will add the code to your account, then go to your account management and activate it. You'll be able to log in immediately, no activation. If you upgrade to membership (there'll be a "become a member" button by DR in your account info), again, you just do it there, no verification through e-mail.

The only weird movement thing I noticed was sometimes if I was holding "W" while I was also holding the attack mouse button on a monster, it'd do this weird stutter thing. But I just let go of the W key and it was fine.
Other than that there wasn't any movement lag afaik.

The same thing that separates Diablo and the generic Korean MMO. It's nothing like your RO or whatever.
One, it's not really a MMO. It's more of a party based Diablo/PSO/hack and slash game. Two, it's not Korean. Three, there's no furries.
Seriously, if you like Diablo, you can't help but like this game. Does that make it worth playing? I dunno, that's up to you. But since it's free, and only 500 megs, there's no good reason to not just play for a few minutes.

Anyway, I'm okay with this model as it's basically an MMO with an extensive trial mode. Not something I'm interested in, but reasonable nonetheless.
Also in to OP it looks like you said that yellow items are orange and purple items are yellow.
Got a laggy connection today so I'll get further tomorrow.
Heh, nice catch. the funny part is that was a copy+paste from the official site. Some of the info there is out of date.
It's a similar model to Hellgate; minus the $50 up front and it's $5 less a month...so...yeah. A lot cheaper. I remain skeptical on Hellgate. It just doesn't look that fun IMO. But we'll see. Hopefully there'll be a demo of some sort.

I guess it should be emphasized that this is not an MMO. It's a dungeon crawler, ala Diablo. The only part of it that vaguely resembles an MMO is the optional monthly fee, and there's really no reason to subscribe. It's not a grind fest, it doesn't take a billion years to do anything interesting, it's just a game with a non-conventional pricing model. And it's fun as hell.

It's pretty laggy, are their servers in Korea or something?
Seems like a mix of Diablo 1, bits of WoW UI, and Kingdom of Loathing humor. If the lagginess persists it'll be kinda bleh.
(I'd still much rather have Diablo 3, damn you Blizzard, why'd you have to do Starcraft 2 first?)

No, everything is server verified in WoW. What causes rubberbanding is the client and server disagreeing, as most clients are predictive.
I'm in, as JNighthawk.
Hairsplitting.
Maybe I'll give this a shot instead.
i liked it enough to buy a month. i'm excited to see how the game is after the patch.

Downloading client, will more than likely be Narian, or a variation thereof.
Seriously, WTF is with the random hating on Hellgate London and everyone expecting 110% of the worst from Flagship Studios? I am a cynical asshole, but if I went around with the attitude that most people have of games companies, I would seriously stop playing games and go take up golf.
