Racoon city does get blown up at the end of 3, and 2, since they’re concurrent stories. And it is the setting for a lot of early games so I respect the idea that it’s too full up with existing events. But it’s been decades since a new game was set there I think? I just think it’s such a cool and iconic part of the resident evil dna that I would like to revisit it with a new story some day, either a spin off set at the same time as the events of the early games, or like a rebuilt city in the current timeline.

I’d like a story maybe where you play as the other Stars as they’re hunted early in the outbreak, like a Reach kind of thing. Or just a completely new character during the fall. Or in the current timeline maybe a New Racoon City thats built as like a showpiece city with all these anti virus safeguards and preparations to sell people on it being like the safest city in the new world of constant virus outbreaks

As for remaking code Veronica, I know that game has some fans but yikes that’s some heavy lifting to make that work nowadays. The whole cross dressing thing, general uneven pacing weirdness, and STEVE, ie, the most terrifying void entity of unsettling dread that’s ever haunted the franchise.

    STEVE

As for zero, I think that has a lot of potential, it’s fairly focussed and simple which could work in a remakes favour, maybe spice up the bosses a bit tho

Even though I personally want it to be true I find the RE0/CV rumors very hard to believe.

RE4R was a big success, it teased RE5R but now they're going to jump all the way back to RE0 and CV? Highly unlikely unless these remakes were outsourced to someone in which case they better not fuck up.

There's a lot stronger desire for a CV remake than 5, based on what I've seen. Not so much Zero, though.

I used to be of the opinion that CV doesn't really need a remake because it's still fairly modern and playable.

Then I made the horrible mistake of watching a Let's Play and my god, Steve.

    Please unmake Steve.

CV definitely needs a remake. It uses tank controls, and there are some of us in the Resident Evil community who are tank-control-impaired and cannot get them to work no matter how hard we try. We just walk into walls and fences and the hungry maws of zombies.

I’d argue CV is the least playable of the old games. It’s the definitely the one with the highest likelihood of screwing your self and ending a playthrough by running out of ammo. I never got past STEVE and I found it a pretty dire slog overall before that point.

Also while CV has its fans and they’re vocal, RE5 sold way more, like way way way more. I think if they’re going purely based on what they think would sell the best it would be and re5 remake. But again they might be just going based on what they want to do for whatever reason. My guess is if the remakes keep selling they’ll just keep doing them

I feel like RE5 sold well based on RE4. I'm happy to be wrong but it doesn't feel like it had a ton of long term affection.

CV also released on the Dreamcast first right?

Yep, it's one of the reasons I bought a DC, and it's my favorite RE.

I really think after 4 we're getting to the point that remakes aren't even necessary, just upscales.

Nah, I think 5 and 6 could both benefit from remakes. Mostly because I think both of them could use another once-over in terms of gameplay and story.

Not to the same extent as Zero or Code Veronica, but still.

It's a shame they never made a RE after 4. Biohazard and Village were great off-shoots, but a true numbered sequel would be amazing.

Give us an RE5 already Capcom!

I'd love remakes for CV and 1. There are plenty of people who've never experienced CV at all and 1 would be fantastic in the RE Engine. Imagine how they'd do Crimson Heads.

But what I really want—what I really, really want—is a remake of Outbreak. 4 or 5 player co-op running through various scenarios in Raccoon City, where each character has specific strengths and weaknesses? Throw in a level editor and that game would last a decade.

RE4 NG+ on Professional is a cakewalk so far. Upgraded guns unfair on the poor zombies. Cabin fight coming up, though, so maybe that'll empty out my ammo.

Never played RE4, thinking about starting up the REmake. Any tips I should know? Recommended difficulty?

In Dead Space I enjoy doing a "plasma cutter only" run to focus all resources, is there an equivalent here?

If you've done other action shooters like Dead Space and the like, you'll probably be okay with Hardcore.

For weapons not really, enemies mostly drop ammo for weapon types you have, but unless you really know what you're doing you'll want a pistol/shotgun/rifle setup, so the rest becomes deciding which guns of those types you like the feel of best. Different people favour different guns. Some people prefer the Red9 for its superior damage, other people are wronglike the Blacktail for the smaller size and higher accuracy, and so on.
And you get a nearly full refund when selling weapons, so there's no reason not to upgrade what you have as much as possible and still be willing to ditch it when something else comes along that you like the look of.

The one tip I'd give you is to not skimp on using/upgrading the knife. The durability feels annoying at first, until you realise that it's a buffer that you run through before using ammo/health. Anything you can do that uses knife durability works out better off than not doing it.

i think normal is the "hardest" option when it asks you to pick at the start. it's not really explicit which is which. probably stick to normal unless you really need to turn it down; i've never played one of the old REs and I did fine with it. picking between chris and jill is kind of a difficulty select too, chris has less inventory to work with and can't pick locks and has fewer beneficial NPC interactions

edit: oh duh you meant RE4 Remake

RE4 Remake does "smart balancing" where it scales the difficulty on the fly as a reaction to how you're doing as a player. If you start running out of ammo for a specific gun, they will start dropping more ammo for that gun. It all happens pretty seamlessly in the background. And whether you're a pro or a beginner, the game actually does a very good job of keeping you feeling like you have just enough to keep going. It's actually a bit magical how adaptive the game is.

  • klemmingklemming Registered User regular
My main advice on difficulty is if you don't feel like you made it to the title drop by the skin of your teeth, play on a higher difficulty.

Nobody remembers the singer. The song remains.

I usually go with the highest "non gimmicky" difficulty - none of those zero deaths or no saving sorts of things like in Dead Space 3.

Hardcore's the toughest difficulty available at the start, give that a go and see how you get on. It's tough but definitely not unfair in the same way as something like Evil Within's Akumu mode.

@Professor Phobos The original RE4 actually did have a Plasma Cutter equivelant; the Red9 pistol! The consensus back in the day was that it could carry you the entire game. Sadly (maybe?) it was rebalanced in REm4ke and is no longer such a crazy standout weapon. I think I liked the default starting pistol the most.

You get a decent percentage of the money you invest in upgrades back if you sell a weapon, so don't be afraid to experiment with stuff. By the end of the game you should have enough to max out maybe two of your favourite weapons if you're hunting for treasures (you should be hunting for treasures!)

    Oh brilliant

It's still very strong, especially with the exclusive damage upgrade. I've been chewing through basically everything up till the castle on a NG+ professional run with ease and have so many bullets left over. I've pulled out the shotgun for chainsaw dudes and almost nothing else.

  • BogartBogart Streetwise Hercules Registered User, Moderator Mod Emeritus
I’m not saying the game is cheating but I’m at the first garador fight on professional and this fucker can see me just fine. Also the knife prompt is hella temperamental.

  • BogartBogart Streetwise Hercules Registered User, Moderator Mod Emeritus
Just passed the double garrador fight and yeah if I see these guys using a disabled parking spot I'm calling them out.

The castle is a tougher nut than the village on professional, mostly because of the garradors, knights and the lantern guys. Might have to spring for a rocket launcher to take out Verdugo, though. In fact if I sell all my upgraded weapons (bar a pistol) I might be able to afford the infinite one now.

Is Capcom doing a dedicated event during Summer Games Fest? If so, when?

I know they have already shown a couple things during both the Sony and Microsoft showcases, but I'm curious if they're going to do their own thing as well. I need a RE 2024 announcement. It could be RE9. It could be RE0, RE1, or CV remake. I don't care which. I just need something.

RE 0/1/CV/5/9/whatever probably isn't far enough along that they want to show it off.

The RE team has been firing on all cylinders lately. An extraction shooter could be a really cool thing.

I mean, Left 4 Dead is basically the original extraction shooter. And it's a zombie theme.

Only if every extraction involves escaping some puzzle-based facility designed by a madman with a penchant of making keys out of anything he can find. Just completely random shit, like having to find the broken pieces of a pot and superglue them together. The bones of dead squirrel made into a necklace. Collecting bugs to draw a spider out of the ceiling so you can steal a plain key off its back.

You say that, but with how stripped down R3make was in that department I feel like I could do with a lot more Raccoon City alleyways in the current engine!

Their attempts at PVP are complete garbage. The co-operative PVE elements of RE5 and 6 were the best parts of those games.

I've also never played the Outbreak games but they seem to be remembered fairly fondly?

  • urahonkyurahonky Cynical Old Man Registered User regular
I would kill to be able to play Outbreak with a buddy. It sounds really cool.

Also I played a little bit of Umbrella Corps and it wasn't nearly as bad as people said. Of course I got it for like $5 so it hits different than if you dropped $60.

I don’t know why they don’t expand mercenaries and add shitloads of maps and characters and enemies from the whole series. It seems like such a slam dunk, I would pay money for more mercenaries content but they just kind of don’t seem interested. You could totally turn it into a kind of Mass effect 3 multiplayer mode

The Outbreak games were incredible through my rose glasses. They might be ruined with voice chat like Discord, but proximity chat and restricting to chat wheels immediately bumps up the horror. I remember playing the first few levels of Outbreak 1 and being like "what the fuck even is this magic"? I really really wish they would remaster those.
