FF7 fans:
"I don't know how this story could possibly be followed by someone who isn't a FF7 fan. They really messed up on it for newcomers"
Newcomers:
"I don't know anything about FF7 and I thought it was great and totally easy to follow".
FF7 Fans:
"No, but you just don't even know how much you don't get right now".
Newcomers:
"That's fine, it feels like a nice tease, I liked it".
FF7 Fans:
"No you didn't, trust me".
I don't give a shit about what people do or do not know, I am concerned that it is going to be impossible to integrate, do I need to type it a 4th time
this is a cool and totally appropriate reaction
Edit: I'm not helping, sorry. Long day. I think ... hmn, I think it's not worth really being too worried about? If they whiff it they whiff it (And boy is Square good at squandering good will) but I think they're very aware FF7R is going to bring on a ton of people who only have a passing knowledge of the franchise.
Those of you trying to be rational need to knock it off. People are getting mad about Final Fantasy, goddammit, and you can't stand in their way. Let them chase their bliss.

not sure this is helpful. i totally get where they're coming from, I don't think they're being "irrational" or whatever at all. just a difference of opinion and expectation
To break open any fight, just give Tifa the materia that lets her start with ATB, give her haste, have her cast haste on herself as soon as she can, and then spam punches until Starshower comes up and hit Starshower. Repeat until every enemies is red milk.

Tifa Lockhart
I didn't use shortcuts 99% of the time but I will say that it probably improves the Tifa experience a thousand percent because of how much you can just hammer the shortcut instead of constantly reselecting the ability a thousand times.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

Oh yeah, that wasn't meant to be entirely as dick-ish as it reads. This was always going to be a game that provoked some opinions and feelings, and that's cool. I think there's a bit much of "your opinion is wrong", but hey, that's how it goes.
I think it's much better than expected (and much better than a pure retelling), for all its pacing flaws. I get why people are worried about sequels, but let's see. Personally, I'm mostly interested in any changes to the basic gameplay - I could be fine with some pretty major changes to the core combat. But I could also live with what we have.
I just started (chapter 7 now) but I realized that I should probably switch between the characters often because it took forever for the AI to master the weapons or materia such that they are still using the most basic stuff
Also I like Jessie the best out of the rest of the crew now lol
Nah you were playing the game right. They’re playing the game crazy.
You're right, I'm not out of touch, it's the children gamers that are wrong!
I accepted long ago that I’ll never be that Good At Video Games to the point I gotta be practicing animation cancels and the like.
It’s probably fun and looks cool as hell but you’re not playing wrong because you’re not doing it. The game’s likely not balanced around playing at that level.

I started playing through on hard mode but so far have given up after trying the first reactor boss. Not being able to use phoenix down sucks!
I'll probably give it a few days off and then try again with more tailored materia. Like, you know....having Raise equipped...
The gameplay definitely has a huge ceiling but no encounters were designed to expect anything even approaching that level from the player in order to see any content, even the optional stuff
All of normal mode you can play through pretty sub-optimally and still have it be fun. Really the game seems to mostly anticipate that being the case.
Then you get to NG+ mode and that's where you really have to start cracking open the combat.
There's a lot of fights which I had just assumed require you to take damage and now people are running them perfectly on youtube
and not in like "haha I broke the fight" ways, but just through the normal game mechanics
A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.
Pagos done, and I’m pretty glad to be finished with it.
I wish they widened the FATE level a bit though. Anything more than -1 before getting way reduced rewards is rough, especially when just starting out in a new zone.
I'm really liking the expansion of the Shinra headquarters. Just another addition that makes the world feel like an actual world and there's some good character beats.
As someone who didn't play FF7, I thought the end of this was badly paced and pretty disappointing tbh
A someone who has, I agree with you.
Even as someone who loved the experience overall, it absolutely was badly paced (probably my biggest complaint about the game in general). Disappointing is subjective obvs, but the second-to-last fight definitely lacked oomph for me.

The pacing really fell apart at the end. Especially the switching shit in chapter 17.

I just beat this last night and holy shit can chapter 17 go fuck itself. Like I started at 8 pm and knowing there were two chapters left thought I would finish in a reasonable timeframe. Nope! Up til 1 in the morning.
It also didn't help that I died on
Whisper Bahamut
and had to re-do the ENTIRE SEQUENCE, WITHOUT CUTSCENE SKIPS BECAUSE THE BATTLE IS TECHNICALLY STILL GOING ON THROUGHOUT.

Fortunately the boyfriend made that blunder first, and warned me to have Barrier equipped to cast, in addition to Cures spread over the party. Between that and the absolute godliness of Counterstance, that fight was a one and done for me.

i beat this last night! i had a blast! i haven't maintained interest in a final fantasy long enough to see the credits since like, VI!
some chapter 17/18 things
despite being forewarned about the pacing i really didn't mind Hojo's Lab at all? tho i think a good amount of enjoyment came from me rewatching an LP of the OG shinra section just prior and getting to see all the most goofy ass monsters getting properly realised and placed in context in the remake, (look,, just, Time Tea Pot Man Is My Hell House, okay???) only slightly disappointed we didn't get to see Stop Sign With A Gun anywhere. also it was nice to have some variety pulling from the full party plus dog friend. chainsawfish was a bit of a drag just due to the nature of it circling around a tiny walkway when i just wanted it to hang out inside my ATB ward so i could pummel it into oblivion with tifa, god dammit
definitely agree that the end of the shinra building lacked the punchiness of the original, it was jarringly bloodless- though i don't mind them skipping the imprisonment bit, and including aerith's childhood "home" was a very good new addition
jenova, rufus, and elevator tank were all a great string of bosses, mechanically interesting and satisfying to fight. 2nd phase of rufus after darkstar exited the picture was a drag, part of that was on me underperforming but it also felt like they frontloaded all the hype as shit cinematic cut-ins into the first part of that battle
ummm maybe i'll post about chapter 18 later but as far as the highway chase goes i had just the biggest dumbest grin during the whole opening motorcycle cutscene, i wish the gameplay was a little less shallow compared to the regular combat though, the boss robot there was rather tedious
also was totally expecting roche to show up again, dunno why he didn't

hmm where can i buy this game

They were playing Tifa like a Smash bros. Animation cancels mid-combo to take advantage of something else and all.
For the link
i kept forgetting they existed!

Yep! The train graveyard was, like, two or three screens? And it was just some random battles and a minor puzzle. No story at all.
Also Scarlet's theme is really, really good.
