The General [Coronavirus] Discussion Thread 3.0
Given the volume of discussion around this topic, we're gonna be doing things a bit differently until further notice. Instead of one thread, we'll be using two and a half threads.
- An updates and information thread. News about response efforts, updates on the spread of the virus, new resources to keep track of news, political developments directly related to the virus, etc. No rumors, no twitter randos, do your best to make sure it's verified information before posting to this thread.
- A general coronavirus discussion thread. How things are happening in your town, how you're doing, how your family is doing, and other things you don't think go into the updates thread this goes in the general thread.
- The existing chat thread. There are lots of 'fun' or interesting things, posts tangentially related to the disease, cool videos, twitter posts, etc, that aren't news, or really something to discuss. Feel free to post them in the existing chat thread, because it's there for you, even if you don't usually post there. They're not all bad people. It's there, you might as well use it.
This should help us have some readable threads, given the current volume of posts.
I'll be using my move posts powers occasionally, to keep things where they belong, so don't be surprised if that happens.
Burrack made a thread for
lockdown resources, so you might want to look at that as well.
This thread has shown itself to be more than willing to go romping off into fields filled with discussions of secession and civil war and alien invasions and what have you, and it shouldn't do that.

Usually there are Dawn Services all over the country, gatherings with the playing of bugles and speakers and it's very solemn. Sadly, we are still in Level 4 Lockdown on Saturday, so all of the large gatherings have been cancelled.
So right now, the plan is for people to stand at the end of their driveways at dawn and observe a minutes silence.
Monday is the day that businesses are observing Anzac day, and so it's a public holiday.
Then at 2359pm on MOnday night, we move to Level 3.
Which, as many people are joking, is Lockdown, with KFC.
Most of the same restrictions in place, but food delivery and drive throughs are open and online shopping sites can start shipping items that weren't considered to be essentials. As such, those people who need childcare/school are able to send their kids to daycare/school up to Year 10.
If you're able to stay home, then stay home and keep your kids there too.
3 new cases and 2 deaths here today. That brings us up to 16 deaths.

We're not far behind you guys, it seems - 11 cases and 1 death today.
We have had only a single case in 10 days here where I live and we're down to 9 active cases. Too soon to break out the champagne, but looks like we're at the end of the beginning.
That's some really shitty timing, sorry.
Unfortunately he’s ubiquitous, even in other hemispheres,
I bet there’s aliens somewhere on another planet texting each other, all “you won’t believe what the fascist baby said this time!”
Kemp's speedbumping might make them think twice.
My husband has a weird relationship with his father and sister that I don't entirely understand, they just seem to get each other, or all think they do well enough that it works anyway. Nobody really asks me onto their email chains and I don't ask to be on them because when my husband wants me to read something from them once in a while I cringe, hand the device back, and try to forget I read it.
Apparently he'd looked in on the most recent one today and did a o_o at an email from his sister. I guess she and their dad had been talking about how liberals wanted to take away all their freedom of movement using the virus as an excuse to become a surveillance state. Phrasing aside, I've heard concerns about the consequences of allowing the kind of intrusion being discussed from all parts of the political spectrum and their dad doesn't like liberals, so nothing new there. His sister, though.
She could have pulled this email straight out of David Icke's brain, lizard men and all. The virus isn't real, it was created by these actively malicious beings existing outside of the 3D realm who have mind controlled us into a state of submission so badly that we aren't allowed to leave our houses for fear of this "virus" that isn't there or bad or something, which is really weird considering the fact that we're all pretty sure she had it in January. My husband responded with an email so caring and concerned in a way I've never really seen him come off in text. I said I was surprised, and he said well yeah, she's my sister and she's just not quite all there, she's always been like that. She responded to this email highly offended that he'd dehumanized the masses or something when there was just nothing like that in there, and something about human nature being a shining beacon of good and we'd overcome this fear.
I was shocked because I'd always thought of her as this logical, level-headed and practical person. Apparently that's because I'd met her near the start of her years-long Buddhist phase, and this is just the next thing. Her husband is aware I guess, but he's the homemaker who spends all the time with the kids so I'm hoping they don't have to worry about this. I worry that they could end up getting caught up in something that puts them in danger of infection although if she did have this I guess it's pretty likely they're immune at this point. I hadn't seen this particular intersection of covid denial with lizard men and it's worrying to me because that one ends in antisemitism every time. These guys already end up blaming Jews for AIDS.

So just about the crazification factor
I mean this isn't the country, this is the right wing activist base and their funders. The polling shows they are way out there all by themselves.
Conflating the shelter in place declarations for parts of California and Manhattan with casual gatherings being restricted seems to be a tactic by the right wing.
Pretending someone in rural Wisconsin is being put on house arrest because Gavin Newsom called Trump a fucking moron.
While true realize that NY is doing anything on a local level. The restrictions on NYC are also in place upstate.
If anything I'm happy that we're getting tougher restrictions up here than could otherwise be justified politically but I can't imagine how this is playing in the North Country.
Personally, I’m not convinced the antibody tests are specific for this coronavirus.
Alternatively, since California seems to still be increasing in cases, this data may be more of a snapshot of things before they get worse.

New uses for cruise ships in a weird time
This doesn't appear to be accurate. A majority of states currently have of statewide shelter in place orders. It isn't just "parts of California and Manhattan" and goes quite a bit beyond closing gyms and sit down restaurants.

Eh. That lists like Kansas having a "Stay at Home Order" but they lost that Church gathering case because they left malls an libraries open.
That's way different than what NY is currently doing.
So close
Alas, so few of them can make the connection
That polling might potentially shift at some point well past the 6 weeks you forecast, maybe, doesn't seem like your prediction was very accurate.
Man, it's going to be weird seeing people out bowling while wearing masks.
My hope is our State reps hold fast on our current stay at home direction. However, if other states relax them, I worry that we can't hold back the influx of people.
It already happened once when this all started and the beaches weren't closed down right away.
Those studies I think point to the true death rate being closer to 0.4-0.6 % rather than 1.5%. But, that still means we should expect 40 times as many deaths as during a flu season if we do nothing. So, 1.6 million dead in a completely uncontrolled spread.
I think they are showing something, especially combined with the fact Santa Clara has confirmed a death from community transmission on February 6th. Which means the virus has probably been here and spreading since mid to late January.
These studies show that the case fatality rate might not be that much worse than the flu. But this virus can infect everyone. Even if it was exactly as bad as the flu, it would still kill 8x as many through sheer number and rate of cases.

I prefer that approach to and position to what I'm seeing out of Quebec, where one of the things they've discussed is apparently opening the schools to purposefully use children for herd immunity? This is a report from last week, but I haven't seen Quebec's Chief Medical Officer refute any of this thinking. Ignoring of course A) Children can still die of this, What about the people who live with these children, C) We're not sure how good the immunity is, and D) there's now suggestion that even in asymptomatic cases, some damage may have occurred.

Our numbers aren't the worst, and we're not yet overstressing the healthcare system. We have pretty stringent stay at home measures in place, and mask orders as well. And local law enforcement are taking it seriously - A big news story the past few days is that a bunch of people tried to go to the beach and the police basically showed up and said "Go home, idiots".
All that said, our numbers are still going up at an alarming rate. We're pretty much at 1,000 active cases and counting, and the new case rate has been fairly consistent over the last two weeks, rather than declining. Which probably indicates a testing deficiency, I guess.
I won't lie, as someone who has felt socially isolated a lot over the last few years I feel a bit of schadenfreude seeing certain kinds of people lose their shit over being isolated for just a month.

Seattle area COVID survey service. They have a daily allotment of tests you can put in for. They mail you a swab, you shove it up your nose, put it a reagent vial and mail it back. A few days later, test results. It's not good for accute situations but as a "Is this #$%^$ lingering cough COVID or not" it's great. And they specifically invite healthy people as well, to test for asymptomatic cases.
Every state doesn't, which is just...come on guys. UW can't be the only university with a good virology department, can it?
My wife is disabled and the venn diagram of people who have previously told her how lucky she is that she gets to stay home everyday and people who are losing it after being home for a month is very near a circle.
But there are still literally thousands of people dying in the US every day to this shit with tens of thousands of new cases and all these plans for re-opening shit are making me feel like I'm taking fucking crazy pills. How is this not clearly insane to everyone with two functioning brain cells to rub together?
People who are out of work and out of money, yeah, I get them being desperate. But I haven't actually seen anyone talking about those people except in the abstract. It's all business owners and randos who just want things "back to normal". There's an asshole in my neighborhood with his van covered in multi-colored scrawl about his 1st and 2nd amendment rights and how we need to vote our governor out because reasons. I mean jesus fucking... It's all really damaging my calm, is what I'm saying, and I wish people could stop being so fucking stupid.
Sorry. It's just really getting to me today.
Kinda lost my cool a few days ago to some "protestors" that doing a social protest near my grocery store. I have not yelled and swore like that in public before but have also never seen stupid on such a level.
