Oh dear. So Angela can learn a skill to sacrifice HP when casting spells to boost damage, and there’s also a skill to partially use HP in place of MP when casting. So I could just outfit Angela to drain her health in exchange for constant, boosted casting.

I just got her the 30% spell discount, which stacks with the 30% spell cost to HP. One of the class 3 options gets 40% spell discount, so I'm probably going that way just to see if that adds up to free spells.

Haha. The snow field machine golems boss fight is still extremely deadly, even with dodging. Everyone I wasn’t directly controlling inevitably fell into a trio of rocket punches or fire spells and died instantly. Ran through a lot of Cups on that fight.

Angela's 4th dark class can get the Wound All chain ability, which sacrifices 5% of both allies HP in exchange for an 80% boost to spells.

This can stack with her own Wound ability sacrificing 5% of her health for 20% boost.

Multiply this with abilities like Weakness for 25% elemental weakness boost, Duran's own support ability that boosts elemental weakness damage for the party by 12% and a bunch of other stacking bonuses, and for the low cost of killing your whole party, you too can cast Lv. 3 nukes for 20,000+ damage :)

I tried to go back and play the original trials in the mana collection but I'm struggling with it because it controls like absolute trash.

Protip. If you hold A, it goes into auto battle. Makes regular encounters a lot better.

Edit: this was a feature on the original release btw.

I don't want an auto battle, I just want my character to not change the direction they are facing when I attack and I don't like having to deal with a cooldown window on just regular attacks after each strike.

Well sorry to hear that. That's basically how the game was designed. I dunno if I'll call it trash for that bit, I always felt it was a call back to SOMs charge bar but you can't hit before 100%. It's unique to say the least.

Heh yeah, I'll forever love the original SD3/Trials of Mana. The combat was amazing for its time -- having a delay after your regular attack doesn't stand up to modern games, but it was actioney as hell compared to everything else that was out there. I still enjoy playing it with friends, and do to this day, but I can understand the combat not being for everyone! There's definitely some lag in there, and sometimes stuff takes awhile to die after you kill it, but damn if it wasn't the best combat RPG I had played at the time. I loved Duran who was the slowest out of all of them, and the whole "attack, move while you wait for cooldown to finish, attack" system doesn't feel tooooo far removed from the "attack, dark souls dodge, attack" that we have now.

I started a new game on Secret of Mana and then realized another thing that felt so off about trials. When in combat you move around slow like you're constantly charging your weapon like in Secret.

Yeah, that’s my biggest issue with vanilla Trials. Your AI partners can run all the time, but you get to do the slow shuffle.

I think the one thing I like using the autobattle for is to get past that issue; you run like an AI partner during autobattle, and then you can release the button once you get in range of an enemy.

So Charlotte’s dialogue is just objectively terrible, eh?

I as much as a character having a speech impediment is objectively terrible, sure. I know real life people with that speech impediment and I'm sure they're happy to see this endlessly made fun of online.

I’ve got the voice track to Japanese. It’s the subtitles that are awful. There’s no reason why they had to change the L’s to W’s in the subtitles. That’s just annoying.

Sorry, I should have been clear that I don’t have the English voice track on.

Ah, my bad. I've just seen so many people on this thread ragging on the english voice and it's been rubbing me the wrong way.

I think the choice was to be equivalent with her having very childish speech patterns in the Japanese. In Japanese that can come across with specific use of honorifics and certain word choices. In English.... well, actually, you can do much he same. Stuff like saying “Papa” and “Mama” or talking about villains as “bad guys” and stuff like that. They just went a bit further with wanting to make her dialogue sound childlike (even though it’s not like children universally have speech inpediments).

That being said, I think Charlotte’s dialogue is fine. I think she’s got some fun lines in battle and in cutscenes, and her speech pattern is something that normalized for me pretty fast.

I was gonna say it’s funny how she will call the rest of the team “rookies” when starting a battle, but it sort of occurred to me that Angela probably actually is less trained than Charlotte.

If you can, listen to the 8-4 podcast on this issue. Apparently, Charlotte was always this annoying even in Japanese. Probably something we never experienced due to the way it was fan translated back in the day.

I mean, Charlotte does have some great post-battle lines, and she has this attitude about being better than anyone gives her credit for.

I just wish that they didn't give her the speech impediment. And if she has a massive sentence, it's nearly impossible to read the subtitle at a glance.

As far as verbal ticks go i find Charlotte's a lot less annoying then H'aanit's when it comes to characters with odd speech patterns

I am far more annoyed by this then i really should be early game spoilers
Them taking Reisz out of my party to fight Gova on the ghost ship so that she's now a full level behind both Hawkeye and Charlotte.

I finished the demo with all 3 characters at Lv. 7 just so they could all have consistent xp gains and level ups.

And then I put the pre-order bonus Rabite Charm on Charlotte, forgetting that she would get an extra 10% xp with it equipped until level 10.

Once I noticed something was off, I removed it, but she was always 50xp ahead of the other two and it was maddening until I was getting enough xp in a regular fight that it didn't matter anymore.

Which was right around the Ghost Ship when Hawkeye fell behind by 5500 xp.

I was also hoping they would find some neat solution for the ghost ship. Alas, Angela is still a half level behind at level 45.

Also, ??? mark seeds are still dumb. They seem worse in this iteration because you could farm them really hard outside of....whatever the mirage town place is called where you were around level 38 in the original. You hit 38 waaaay earlier and I haven't gotten there yet, and the drop rate outside of that seems really low! Luckily there are ways around having to farm them with the PC version, so hooray progress one way or another I suppose.

Yeah, it's easiest to just duck into a couple of the dungeons with them early on (wood is before you even run into any enemies) and snatch a few before pulling out imo.

You can actually farm them in the very Benovodons dungeons. The thing that might be troublesome is that unless you pumped your luck/seed lv/rolled with Hawkeye, they're still relatively rare.

I actually have max luck Hawkeye with the item drop skill, and the drop rate is ass. Definitely lower in the dungeons than it was in the mirage town in the original. I think I've had one drop through 4 Benevodon dungeons. If the intent is to have you class change after all of the Benevodon dungeons then it kind of makes sense, but when you hit level 38 before the first dungeon I'm not a huge fan.

I'll admit I wound up just finding a cheatengine table that had a nice easy to use item spawner script, and just spawned the 3 items I wanted. Much better than farming low drop rate items that may not even turn into the items I want.
