I just realized that Portland will be reaching 69 straight days of protests in a couple of days and I am slightly concerned about some people protesting while also memeing about the Sex Number

Should be fine as long as you warm up and do some stretches beforehand

of course she loved the water herself, but no humans are too infant-like, they must be treated like baby dogs

Took me ages to realise that our middle dog wasn't just being a weird mouthy asshole whenever I came in from the surf, he was actually trying to take my hand in his mouth so he could drag me away from the crazy danger water.
I think he's finally accepted that people like to go in waves, though he would never be so foolish himself.

edit: The oldest one used to have huge sulking fits whenever my sister swam in deep water. Now she just wades out to shoulder height and 'llamas' (ie stretches her neck up as tall as she can) to keep a protective eye on us.
Absolutely none of them would be any good at performing a rescue, I don't know what their emergency plan is.

I had a dog as a kid that I "taught" to swim by going out into the lake and briefly diving below water. He would get so worried that he'd immediately plunge all the way in and come out to drag me back to shore (and he was a massive Rottweiler; that was well within his capabilities). Once he got out to me he would generally just turn around and swim back, occasionally with me hanging off his shoulder for the free ride, but after long enough doing this he eventually started swimming for like, fetching sticks or whatever (sometimes even without me pretending to drown first).

My mom's dog haaated the water, only a bit more than she hated seeing us swimming in it. Wouldn't go in more than a few inches deep, maybe a foot if it was calm-- she'd get the zoomies and just book it up and down the shoreline, barking or making other distress sounds. My dog was mostly ambivalent and I'd just switch the hand I was holding the leash in when he wanted to swim or walk on the beach, but he wouldn't fetch in the water (he could be bribed to do it on solid ground).

Compare that to my first dog, who on several memorable occasions jumped into park lakes to go after ducks. Most of the time I managed to let go of the leash.

Oh this isn't super relevant but do folks remember the story about how the Lumbi tribe of North Carolina drove the KKK out of their county roughly sixty-seventy odd years ago?

Well coincidence this, I brought it up with my dad as this interesting local story that I'd never heard before but he stops me, telling me he already has heard the story more times than he can count. See, turns out my dad worked as as a mental health resource officer in Lumberton (which, you may be able to piece together, gets its name from the Lumbi) and he actually met some of the surviving folks who were involved in running them off, and apparently they liked telling the story. A lot.

So in yet another "I never knew this" category, but not terribly surprising.

tl;dr taken from the facebook post which I got it off of:
In 1943 black American soldiers faced off with white American Military police during World War II on British soil. Yes you read correctly black American soldiers had to fight their own white American soldiers, while in England, where they were fighting for the world.

Why? Because the English town of Bamber Bridge in Lancashire was not segregated so they treated the black soldiers like all other races, aka blacks were free to eat, drink anywhere, BUT back in America segregation of blacks and whites still existed. So essentially the American army went to someone else’s country and demanded they adopted America’s racist practices.

The folks in Lancashire were like hell no we like the black soldiers in fact during that time the American created Jitterbug dance was popular and the British women were eager to learn it from the black soldiers. The fondness for the black American soldiers was also supported by those famous essays written by George Orwell who stated that the black American soldiers had the best manners of all the American troops.

So when the American Military police found out that their own black American soldiers were drinking at the same pubs as white people they went in to arrest them. The people in the town got mad about the treatment of the black soldiers and decided to then turn their pubs into “BLACKS ONLY DRINKING PUBS” the very opposite of what was taking place in America with their WHITES ONLY businesses.

Of course this pissed off the American military so guns went blazing, and when word spread back at camp that black soldiers had been shot, scores of men formed a crowd, some carrying rifles and by midnight more American military police arrived with a machine gun-equipped vehicle, so the black soldiers had no choice but to get rifles from British stores while others barricaded themselves back on base, so now it was American white soldiers versus American black soldiers. Several soldiers died including 17 black American soldiers.

Back in America the battle was hushed up because they didn’t want the country to find out that they were fighting their own soldiers which would anger the black population and weaken the morale in the country.

The Australian government conspired with American military leaders to keep black US sailors from taking shore leave whilst in Aussie ports during WWII.

So, here was a bunch of blokes, who just risked their lives fighting back the Japanese from our doorstep, being told they were not welcome to rest and relax before they shipped out to fight the Japanese again

It seems to be a general problem especially with special forces. See also the recently disbanded German KSK company. A tight knit, small group, lots of elitism draped in military traditions, disconnected from the general military structure, explicitly to work outside the normal rules, lots of secrecy. A breeding ground for assholes.

ok that sounds like the battle of brisbane, which was australian troops fighting americans on the streets of brisbane

i didn't think about it because i didn't remember it had anything to do with race

    but from the wikipedia
Troops of the U.S. 208th Coast Artillery rioted for 10 nights in March 1942, fighting against African-Americans from the 394th Quartermaster Battalion. This was attributed to white American resentment towards African-American access to dance halls and for associating with "white girls on the streets of Brisbane". As a result, U.S. military authorities segregated African-Americans, restricting them to the south side of the Brisbane River. However, trouble continued with a major race riot at Wacol, knife fights in South Brisbane and American military police assaulting or killing black troops simply for crossing the Brisbane River. This further incited the Australians, whose culture towards military police was notably different.

so, there you go. i think it just confused me because i didn't realise anyone could be more racist than queenslanders

If we're doing WW2 racist American Troop infighting with allies, I guess I can throw The Battle of Manners St on the pile, although the problem there was the Yank soldiers objecting not to Black Americans but the local Maori soldiers buying a drink in the servicemen's bar. The Maori soldiers of WW2 were not noted for their willingness to take shit from anybody.

What started as a bunch of racist Southerners putting forth segregrationist bullshit devolved into a four-hour riot involving over 1000 servicemen and hundreds of civilians with (possibly) 2 deaths.
