I have a 2000+ list of albums to listen to that I've been maintaining for years. I decided to start at the beginning chronologically and just work through it that way. Don't know why I added this band's discography years ago, but hey why not.

Every time Michael Angelo Batio's name comes up it reminds me of the old shred parody videos from the mid '00s. There was a funnier one than this one but apparently MAB asked for it to be taken down:

Hmmm. A lot of the stuff I was looking forward to didn't impress me as much as I had hoped. For example, there was the new Demons & Wizards. The first song is great! And I have no memory of most of the album after that. I just got the new Sólstafir and was very sad that it didn't grab me on my first listen like they often do, but it could grow on me.
There were plenty of good albums that I did get, but especially during the months that I was teleworking, I found myself getting into bands that have been around for a long time and for whatever reason I never really gave a good listen. And the band that's at the top of that list was Slough Feg, who did not put out an album this year. I've got their whole discography now with the exception of their debut, though!
I've been coming back to Toehider's recently released I Like It!, and I think it's my front runner for AOTY. It's not strictly metal, though it certainly has elements (and definitely starts out that way).
Mike Mills is a silly man and he's really grown on me over the last few years.
(I am also looking forward to the new Dark Tranquillity, but I have to admit that they've never released anything that absolutely captured my attention like The Gallery did.)
I love the new Solstafir album but I'm not sure it'll place in my top 20. Definitely on my top 100 list on RYM.
I've gone through or sampled so many gajillion things this year due to the current situation, but I do have some general lists drawn up, just gotta see what comes along the next 7 weeks.
Eternal Champion's new full-length is out. Good stuff if not quite as much so as The Armor of Ire; Worms of the Earth is probably the superior option to The Invoker for Mythos Metal.
Well, I could count the number of 2020 albums I’ve listened to on two hands, but from that small selection, I’m looking at the Oranssi Pazuzu or the Squarepusher.

I can count them on the fingers of one hand, and I'm pretty sure everyone knows the two I'll shout out (Delain and Nightwish, and definitely in that order; seeing the former on album launch day just before the world went to hell is a memory that will never leave me), but away from actual albums, big ups to At the Movies in particular for probably the best lockdown covers I've heard all year.
I grabbed the 30th Anniversary remix/remaster for GWAR's Scumdogs of the Universe and it's pretty good. By far my favorite album from them and this just gives it a boost.
Also I've been supplementing in the new Solstafir album for parts of the new Assassins Creed Vahalla soundtrack and it matches up quite nicely with the gorgeous visuals/exploration!

Solstafir would definitely work for the ambient/incidental soundtrack for Valhalla.
I've found I can get into a great combat rhythm when raiding shit with Battle Beast's 3rd and 4th albums.

There's quite a few Songs of the Year that existed outside excellent albums, like Anaal Nathrakh's "Endarkenment" is probably my favorite individual song of the entire year but the album is just... well, it's fine.
ERRA's "Snowblood" falls there, too, but there isn't an album to put it on... so...*shrug*
Well, Nonpoint is just as bad, and formed three years later...
I do like maybe 2-3 tracks from either band, HedP.E. had a few Rage Against the Machine knockoff tunes that were decent, but they're just one of those bands which tries its hands at too many styles in one and it dilutes the listening experience.

Jeez, y'all just reminded me of a band that was local for me in the early 90s. They were often played on the local high school radio station that always had some metal show going on. Collapsing Lungs:
This might sound funny in a thread that routinely talks about death metal, but maybe warn people there's an album cover in that last spoiler featuring a picture of a dead baby. I can see how that would be tough for some people caught unawares.
No, you're right. That's my bad. I edited the post to remove that cover.

I would not be surprised if the same artist drew both those covers above. Tom Thiel did the cover for the Amon Amarth album, as well as several others. The new Therion doesn't have artist credits for it in metal-archives yet.
(also, apparently Tom Thiel also did the cover art for Castlevania 64: Legacy of Darkness?!)

I mean, he's no Samwise Didier. I'm pretty sure The Algorithm knew I was playing World of Warcraft when Pandora started serving up Hammerfall.

godsmack did part of the soundtrack to prince of persia 2 so... points?
....and Jean Baudin? That guy played video game covers live on his 12-string bass or whatever during one of Giant Bomb's all-day shows about a decade ago. Sounded really cool and I bought his solo album. I never listen to it!

He should rock a Chapman Stick Tony Levin style. Lot more compact, but same extended range and comes in a 12 string version. That way you're not lugging a bass the size of a compact sedan around with you.

My local band "big names" were Nothingface, Margret Heater, and of course Clutch.
I dont think I need to bother posting Nothingface.
But I do have some close contacts to them since my sister went to high school with Wes Scantlin and dated Jimmy Allen briefly in the early 90's.

Train of thought as follows: Listening to Victor-era Rage.
Victor Smolski... 2020? *click*
"Corpsegrinder? What the fuck?"

Jacek from Sceptic and Dies Irae...
Other vocalist, the drummer from Severe Torture?
