I stopped trying to make lists when I realized I don't have time to listen to everything I want to in a given year anymore haha.
Speaking of Khemmis, I'm not sure how much I like their newest album either but I kind of disliked their last record at first too. But somewhere along the line I fell in love with it and now it's a favourite. Maybe this will be the same?
I'm about halfsies on the new Khemmis album, it's decent, sure, but not yet proportionate to the buzz around it.
The secret motivation behind lists to me is because there's so much stuff coming out any given year it helps me catalogue what I liked so I can remember those fringe releases that otherwise my mental cobwebs would have me forget.

They also make great Christmas presents for those of us who cannot stay current with releases. So far, I've only listened to four 2021 albums: Pharaoh, Darkthrone, Helloween, and raison d'être. I just bought the Yoth Iria on bandcamp, so I'm looking forward to that after hearing the hype from you all.
I like to make and peruse lists for the sake of posterity. There is absolutely no way younger folk (like me) would be able to sift through everything from the last 50-odd years. Sure, some albums might fall between the cracks, but finding stuff through other people's lists and recommendations is best. Unless one wants to (and can) listen to hundreds of new albums a day.
Nobody will fault you for adding a 12/31/2020 album to the 2021 list hahaha.
I had to remove a few because they were coming very early 2022. I currently have both the top 100 and backup 100 ready for RYM, and I THINK I've got a top 21 for '21 for the blog, but we'll see what moves around in the next couple weeks.
If you're not into stuff like Converge this might be a little acerbic. This is like that kind of metalcore mixed with deathcore elements all with a hardcore punk skeleton.

I put one album from past years on my current list that I slept on because there's so much music out there it's almost impossible not to.
I remember reading an interview with Chewy from a couple of months back where he said that the new album was going to be grittier and more aggressive than The Wake. Not sure that comes through in this track, though.
All these folks trying to be the Hiroo Onoda of the Loudness War...
Soooooooooooooooo good....very much a Dimension Hatross vibe but then right in the middle they go exploring. Naturally I've not stopped listening to this for the last half hour.
I'm pretty sure I read awhile ago that they had planned on breaking up once they got their full-length out, and its a shame because its a mighty fine full-length.
Wolves in the Throne room cancelled their NA tour for "personal reasons". Unclear if it's pandemic related or not. Still a bit of a bummer.
Meanwhile, the Ethereal Shroud LP is an interesting one. I don't know if there's enough going on in some of those tracks to justify how long they are, but I still like it.
The new Funeral Mist is also pretty ridiculous and that one drops tomorrow, some crazy and creative riffs on there...couldn't find a great sample but it's awesome.
This one's pretty good too, I always thought of this as a sillier tongue-in-cheek band but when they riff, they can freaking riff. Some shreddy heavy/thrash metal in the Megadeth vein.
Pretty cool, I can still hear a bit of the Posthumous Blasphemer in there but much more musical and melodic, and I love how the synths are used! Psyched for a full-length.
Preorders are up and I usually like to get Arjen's stuff directly from his store, but I'm not sure if I like it enough to pay this much for shipping:
edit: Century Media/Inside Out Music has it for a far more affordable price. It just doesn't include Arjen Lucassen's signature, and I can definitely live without that.

Unleash the Archers was doing a small make-up tour in the US this month for the shows they missed a few months ago due to issues with border patrol. They brought the same opening bands with them, Aether Realm and Seven Kingdoms. Seems like they got through all their US shows, but ran into issues by the time they got to Canada. One of the guys from Seven Kingdoms got covid-19 and that's the end of the tour.
Someone probably posted this awhile back but I've got the whole new Furze EP and it's pretty good, reminds me of his earlier stuff, repressed production, lo-fi interesting riffing and weirdness, and obviously some self-aware silliness. I mean apart from the Darkthrone dudes I think Woe J. Reaper is the Norse black metaller I'd most like to be friends with The purple smoke and then answering the phone? Hahahaha.
You're not going to beat that keyboard guest solo! Also the TUBA...
One of the best solos I've heard him produce in years. And yes, all hail TUBA!

I'm listening to this 2003 track by a band called Athela who never got past the demo stage, and it's almost hilarious how it's basically just Opeth worship from that era. Probably closer to Opeth's first two albums, actually.
If I come across something that really rattles my cage before New Year's Day I'll gladly make an edit, and I might add or subtract a few EPs from that second list.
Ha! Totally forgot about the new Borgne, got confused with last year. No problem, at least I remembered it on the RYM list. I'll kick off Aborted and shuffle that into the blog one, and take a new pic later. Give me a little while and I'll order my non-metal choices.

Yeah I give my albums a month to marinate. There's a whole slew of them that I was for sure were gonna be on the list that never made it.
Replayability is big for me.
And some years even Christmas was too early 😉

Yep this just popped up on my list today too
It's definitely growing on me but it'll be a while until there's another Hunted, which I think is what's hoped-for.

This exists?
aaaand it was released on 12/31/2020. Can't add it to the 2021 list

And Happy Holidays folks however you celebrate.
Also, any chance you've put together another non-metal list as well?
Also also: Yoth Iria is missing from the RYM list.
