The shame is, I would be moderately interested in that if it was Punk NPC Guards In An Urban Fantasy Universe instead of a Discworld adaptation. Why do this?

It's the classic combination of "use the license as an easy way to attract viewers and maybe an idea bank if we get stuck writing at some points" plus "we can change literally any part of the original source without concern because we're incredible genius TV writers, not some small fry book/ comic/ video game writers."

That trailer is like if they got a coked up toddler to describe what discworld was based on what they had heard from a bus station wino.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

I cannot fucking believe they did that to Vimes, or to The Watch and Discworld in general. Just, why? If you're going that far from the source material why even use Discworld or its characters?

Because you cannot sell a genre show without IP

Sigh.
Supernatural returned last night for the first of it's FINALLY FINAL seven episodes.
There was an early bit (nothing important) where we see 2 vampires sitting in their place, watching Dark Shadows (timing!) and drinking blood from those hospital/blood bank bags. At which point Sam and Dean kick down their door and immediately decapitate them. Despite the fact that the show has shown multiple times that some vampires can control themselves, and Sam and Dean knew nothing about them except they were vampires, and we literally just saw them minding their own business with no evidence of hurting anyone. And it seems like we were meant to think it was cool? Ugh.
ALSO. I'm still rewatching earlier seasons and just finished season 4. Great season! On reflection though, they sure did say "bitch" a whole lot. It crossed my mind that I think maaaaaybe they've gotten better about that in later years.
And then tonight, Sam is dressed up at one point and Dean walks in and asks him if he's been shopping at "Abercrombie and Bitch." I felt like stopping the episode right there. I didn't, and I'm obviously going to watch the last 6 episodes, but UGH.

Everything must be A Brand. Gotta get that sweet, sweet built-in audience.
I thought that trailer looked fine. I mean, I don't know why they've decided to make a procedural cop show set in a fantasy land, but I'll take it. It's not based off of something, is it?

this post dips so far into cynical irony from a poster named death of rats that i can't tell which way is up anymore
In all honesty I think it's impossible for anyone who's ever read a discworld book to look at that trailer and see anything besides the potential clean energy source it will provide us when we hook up a turbine to Pratchett as he spins in his grave.
There's a trailer for the new Stand miniseries out and James Marsden is...extremely bad casting for Stu Redman. Genuinely do not understand what happened there.

Unfortunately, when you adapt a property because it sold millions of books, there's always the danger that some of those books were actually read.

Yesterday I watched an episode which made me gasp then scream in unbelievable joy/shock.
Evil is real good, folks.
I just finished the season last night
I did not expect the Evil(tm) fertility clinic, nor the fact that Lexis was from there. Though they did hint a couple of times that things were weird with her, especially in the last episode.
Also man, why didn't Kristen just tell her mom that Leland threatened to kill her daughters multiple times. Like, that me be more helpful than a vague "he's a psychopath".
Several threads seem to have been dropped, or maybe just red herrings?
The evil cat
The ghoul baby born in the cornfield that might or might have happened, who knows, they were super high and seemed to have forgotten.
I liked how consistently the writing for the daughters was "everybody just says a bunch of stuff at the same time."
Haunting of Bly Manor is something I'm going to have to sit with for a while, but my non-spoilery immediate thoughts are
Different from Hill House (in many ways. One that immediately stands out: people are gonna hate this for not being as traditionally spooky/scary as Hill House)
Sadder than Hill House
Gayer than Hill House
I'm pretty sure I loved it more than Hill House for basically all those reasons?
Very very beautiful
I would die for Oliver Jackson-Cohen and his accent
Mike Flanagan is real good at making you want to rewatch episodes over and over, because there's always something you notice out of the corner or top of your eye near the end of a scene, and you just Know there's a bunch of shit you could have (and likely did) miss in the background at other points
Sticking with things Mike Flanagan: I was...Pretty Sure when I left the theater for Doctor Sleep, and now I'm completely confident when I say he's one of my favorite directors in general, not just in horror. He knows the genre, but more importantly he knows what he wants to say when he makes something in ways it's tough to not think about. It's tough to not expand on this point further without going into spoilers; simply understand this is basically a nine hour love/ghost story. In all the ways that may mean. With all the trauma that brings (and as I said in a review of Doctor Sleep in the film thread last year, trauma is a thing Flanagan understands and is able to express well onscreen). There's not an adult in this tale unaffected by at least one, if not both, of the concepts of love and loss. Everything yields to time. Even the soul. And especially the heart

Started watching Dark a few weeks ago, just finished the first series and this is a very good show, even if turning around a birthday is a little weird personally.
good god Hannah is a massively terrible person isn't she?
kissing yer auntie before GoT made it cool!
Also somewhat strange is Noah not appearing to age as we jump around, now he could be just timing things all very well but something tells me not.
Starting the second series next week and if the end of the first is anything to go by it'll be rad.

now, I haven't read a lot of Discworld, but something tells me that it's very weird for Vimes to be a literal punk rocker
but boy
fuck everything about that Discworld show
He’s an extremely jaded, cynical cop that goes out of his way to do the bare minimum copping he can get away with
But he sure as fuck isn’t a punk
