Help with TV - won't turn on, is powerboard fried

So my tv isn't working. It suddenly stopped turning on. No sound, no nothing, as if it doesn't have power.

I'm fairly electrically inclined so opened it up to see if it was just some bad capacitors. Here is what I found on the power board

And here's a close-up:

There's also soot all over the back of the LCD screen.

Dead? Looks dead to me. Wonder if it blew while I was out so I didn't smell the sweet sweet electrical smoke.

Anyone confirm?

Those are some huge caps and a lot of ventilation for an LCD, guessing you've had that TV a couple days. I mean... That's definitely a dead power supply, and judging by the scorch marks and the melted post, I'd say that was a pretty violent death.

You could maybe find a used/refurb power supply on eBay, but considering the cost of parts and the amount of damage there I'd consider that TV a lost cause. With a burnout like that, I'd be worried about other parts dying in the process.

Thanks for the pics though. I'm gonna share them with a couple other repair guys on my team in the morning. ;)

Yeah, gonna agree with the above. Melted plastic across an air gap means there was a LOT of heat coming off that, anything in a rough spherical zone around the failure is probably trashed, and that's likely to include a spot on the display panel itself.

50/50 it can't be fixed and 80/20 it won't be worth it (you might be able to track down that board, but if you get it in only to have a jacked up screen you're looking at even more parts and more complicated work to fix).

Ok well, I got this TV when I moved to Australia in 2011 as part of a 'get tv with an xbox360 for $400' deal.

And it's a garbage tv soooo

But I don't use my tv much so I was hoping to fix it but with almost zero cost and I was pretty sure it wasn't the case.

@Shadowfire here's another pic... enjoy the scorch marks

2011 with that baby main board? It's so cuuuuuuute!

That panel is massive though. I bet it weighs a good bit. A new TV will weigh about as much as that back plastic panel. :rotate:

Wow, that is a very dead and unrepairable TV. Lucky it didn’t catch your house on fire!
