    My son is now 3 years and 3.5 months old.

    He's really pushing boundaries now.

    I tell him not to do something and he looks me in the eyes and does the thing whilst maintaining eye contact....

    Really really testing my patience.

    Recently, my kiddo has been obsessed with NumberBlocks, and by relation to that has taught himself addition, subtraction, and some multiplication and a bit of division. But what he presented my wife with the other day did not come from NumberBlocks, but more than likely from his mathematical curiosity. My wife has made him magnets of NumberBlocks 1-40, and he recently placed a few of them in a certain order: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34.

    Now, if that sounds familiar to anyone, it happens to be part of the Fibonacci Sequence. :open_mouth: I asked him if he'd taught himself the Fibonacci Sequence, and he said "yes", and I asked "why?" and his answer was to say "0,1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233 . . ." and then he stopped and just smiled.

    He's not even 6 yet. He learned the first 14-odd numbers in the Golden Ratio for funsies at 5 years old. I'm not entirely sure if I should be proud or terrified. Possibly a bit of both.

    I recently showed my mum (a 30 year early childhood teacher specializing in helping kids catch up with reading and basic math) Number Blocks and Letter Blocks and she was amazed and impressed. She literally watched it for 2 hours, flipping through episodes on Netflix and occasionally saying "WOW!"

    She thinks those shows are pedagogically revolutionary. She was like "If this existed 20 years ago my job would have been WAY easier"

    But I popped them on for the kid just then, and yeah, she’s super right the way they physically show the numbers and show how the numbers make each other up is really good.

    I think for my kid it's also that they make a character out of every number presented, and heavily suggest that the kids themselves should extrapolate new numbers ("Just add 1!"), and can then characterize those new numbers.

    They've got an infinite amount of new number friends, and I think that's generally appealing to at least my kiddo.

    Each number is a specific character with a personality showing that each number is unique and has unique properties, BUT each number is also clearly made up of other numbers and you can see that at all times.

    Some of the numbers have distinct features called out in their designs to make them more memorable, like 5 points on a star, 7 colors of a rainbow or 6 sides on a die.

    Then the tens are coloured and styled like their 1 digit counterpart

    We found it. In the song "There's So Much More to Explore" a gaggle of numbers are sitting at a picnic blanket under the stars in the order of [1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21].

    So actually, yes, Numberblocks does present some of the numbers in the Fibonacii Sequence. Just, not as many as my kid decided to extrapolate. :lol: I have to assume he searched out the number order and got more information about it.

    the teachers are actually showing numberblocks in Ellie's classroom at times.

    Absolutely love the show. I even also enjoy Numberjacks as well. Not quite as good as Numberblocks, but she's still picked up quite a few mathematical concepts from it. Numberjacks seems a but more theory related in some ways? Bigger, smaller, round vs square, etc.

    I think acclimatisation in kindergarten might have gone too well at the beginning for too high expectations. First month went swimmingly, no per accidents (currently still a development anyway, as nights are still diaper timer) and she also managed to nap after a week.

    But for the last week approximately she's having pee accidents and often doesn't manage to nap. Today also a poop accident.

    Might be a bit of stress, too, as the kindergarten is having some staff shortage, too, so more to do for the staff that's there, resulting in a less relaxed atmosphere for everyone. What ever it is, hopefully we'll figure it out.

    There must have been an A to B to C that I didn't follow but somehow the combination of new skates and a graphic novel has convinced my almost 12 year old that Roller Derby is her favorite sport and that she wants to try to play it. I'm confused but pleased because the prospect of figuring out her roller derby name is a delicious one but I have no idea how to find a youth roller derby league but that probably exists, right? Right?

    At least in my area the professional teams either run or are affiliated with youth leagues.

    Assuming your local derby teams survived the pandemic, we lost a few.

    Day 1 of first grade for my daughter and all the other parents are taking photos and videos while giving pep talks to their kids. Makes me wonder if I’m doing it wrong?

    Yup, my younger one got it free from the library for Summer Reading and they both read it. My first Google pass says that there's a youth roller derby team that practices an hour away, we're going to investigate further and see if it's doable and if she's really serious about it.

    Our older one hasn’t napped reliably for like a year now. We just gave up on expecting it and get pleasantly surprised when he wants one.

    He started kindergarten last week. The first day he came home, and within 10 minutes of being in the house, he was napping.

    Had an early night as I was knackered.

    About an hour in I was in a blissful deep sleep and my son starts having some sort of nightmare which results in him screaming and crying for half an hour.

    He then gets in bed with us and spend all night writhing around whimpering and kicking me. Any attempt to move him back to his bed results in crying.

    So now I've been awake since 0400 and more tired than before!

    Parenting woo.....

    My daughter asked me to play " that song from Beetlejuice" after I started humming a completely different song.
    So, on day-o later, I realized that I never really play music. My parents always played music on car rides, but since we very rarely take the car places, they're isn't a lot of music around. They're usually watching a show on their iPad, or doing something not conducive to music listening.
    She's playing on her switch, so I turn on my Pandora station. Some of my songs aren't very PG, but I figure most are ok.
    A few songs in, NIN, Closer starts to play, and I very quickly skip to the next song. She asks me what's wrong with that instrumental song( I got to it before the words started), and I say truthfully it has some bad words in it. She looks at me, earnestly, and says she's ok with bad words. I try not to overplay it and shrug as the next song starts. No, Ms 8-years-old, you aren't listening to that song.
    Later, during another NIN song, she lets me know she's going to watch a show on her iPad, so asks if I could turn down my music. Ouch....

    Yeah, I very rarely have music on. Ellie's almost always got the tablet on watching videos, but I've been trying to do more music lately. Most of the time i'm listening to classical. But when she comes home singing Taylor Swift that she's picking up from school....

    Some of my son's favorite music (aside any songs sung in shows he loves) is actually the collected works within the Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring Soundtracks. In fact, when I was listening to the track "Sister Friede" was when he decided to see what I was listening to, then go to the Chromebook, type it into Google, and find the song himself, and that was the beginning of him learning to read. He wanted to know how it worked so he started to learn the letters and then the words that went along with them.

    Now he just has to be old enough that I'll feel comfortable playing the games around him, which are not, in my opinion, 6 year old appropriate.

    I can wholeheartedly recommend putting music on! It's never too early to have music be a part of a child's life. It's such a cornerstone of humanity to listen to and share your music with those around you. There's so many different genres out there, but your kids will probably only hear "music for children" unless you put on other stuff. We usually have rock, funk or classical music on in the car or at home, but at 6 years old the kid now informed us about some songs he likes (hip hop/ reggaeton pop music, so the kind of stuff the slightly older kids dance to) so we've put that on more often.

    We've had good experiences with Eurovision Song Festival, because it is camp as fuck, has plenty of different genres and is structured like a competition (and our kid loves those). He got to stay up a bit later to watch the finals with our friends and us. Subwoolfer is now one of his favorite songs. I've sent the clip to his YouTube Kids account so he can listen to it when he feels like it.

    Broke my collarbone last Friday. I can still pick up our 8mo with much awkwardness if I really need to, but it's rendered me unable to:
    - handle her in/out of her cot (so no bedtimes)
    - give her a bath
    - change a nappy
    - wash our reusable nappies
    - do a bunch of other non-baby tasks

    Needless to say this absolutely sucks for my wife. I did not expect I'd be wishing I could change a damn nappy.

    I've had music playing in the house and car every day since both of my kids were born. I don't censor anything, but I listen to mostly rock, punk, mixed with a bit of metal and pop. No rap or hip hop.

    I think the whole "music for children" shit is patronizing as hell.
