We live in a world of many competing PC game store fronts and one of the results of this is many limited time to claim free games. Epic are the biggest proponents of this, giving away one or two games every week, but all the others have their moments. They come out so often and sometimes for such a limited time that I feel if I take my eyes of the news sites for a few days I'll miss a chance for something.
So bookmark this thread for alerts on new stuff to grab, post to add anything you find, and keep throwing things into to that ever growing backlog.
As a note, the intention of this thread is to highlight the limited time entirely freebies. Not simply reduced prices or more long term free stuff or demos.
A bunch of 'mini-games' over the next few days on Steam, but also NiGHTs into Dreams for free to keep on Steam if you're willing to handover your email.
I could only get Golden Axed and Streets of Kamurocho to work on my PC, though. Armor of Heroes failed to start, while Endless Zone crashed after the title screen, even when I bottomed out all the settings in the options.

Don't Make Love is free on Steam in memory of the developer's passing. Description:
Assume the role of a praying mantis in a relationship dilemma. Torn between their mutual love and the instinct to have sex – which could lead to the male mantis’s death – the couple is on the verge of making a decision. Type anything you want in response to your partner during this life-changing conversation.

You can still grab 'em by using the steam:// protocol
Main problem was that the other Busters' AI wasn't worth much in boss battles, so often you'd be running around pulling them back to their feet after they'd been knocked down by ghosts.
You could also -not- do that, but you were functionally immortal as long as there was someone still standing to pull the rest of the team to their feet.
So unless you could juke all the damage and ghosts, you sort of want them up to assist you as well.
It's probably not wholly accurate, but I generally describe that series as Theme Park Dungeon Keeper. If you want a game that takes itself seriously, this aint it.
It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

If you want a new Dungeon Keeper, you want War for the Overworld.

Elite is pretty hit-or-miss. I got it because I thought "hey, I like space sims", except to me it was basically all the most boring stuff from space sims coupled with amazing space scenery. If you like the game loop, you'll probably love it. If you don't, you'll wonder why anybody ever played it.
No reason not try it for free, other than it being on the execrable Epic service.
Yeah gameplay's pretty grindy, but its' got some of the best flying-around-a-solar-system-in-a-starfighter-while-piano-music-plays I've seen.

Yeah, if you're already using Epic, there's zero reason to not at least try it for free. Worst-case scenario, you blow an hour or two figuring out it isn't for you.

I wonder how many people are just keeping an Epic account go claim free games and have no intention of ever spending a cent.
Given that the main complaint about any non-Steam service is ‘ugh, not another launcher’ then getting people to have an Epic account full of freebies is very much the plan to get people in the habit of using it in the hope that purchases will naturally follow on. No idea if it’s cost effective but from personal anecdote it has worked on me.
i am a person who has the epic thing installed just for the free games.
i don't trust them at all to keep any financial info safe so don't see myself ever buying anything from them.
-in warframe (pc), i am fungible-

The epic launcher always seemed to be non-intrusive and easy enough to use, although I haven't used it too much. Is there a reason people always seem to hate on it or is it really just the issue that people don't like having other launchers besides steam?

The usual complaints I've seen are on the storefront side and that Steam has a lot of features there Epic hasn't replicated.

I don't care about the shitty Epic launcher half as much as Epic just being a piece of shit company that has done everything they can to use the success of Fortnight to leverage anti-consumer practices back into the PC game market. On top of being insecure with customer data and outright spying on people without authorization using the launcher, there's also the shit with them moneyhatting multiple PC games into timed exclusives, which is some major bullshit. Them offering up the free games is just their ongoing effort to pull people into their system and I have absolutely zero trust they won't abuse that later on.
About the only actually beneficial thing they've done is offer developers/publishers a significantly better cut of profits than Steam. But again, I have zero trust that Epic will hold to this; they'll crank that percentage up for new games the moment they think they've captured enough of the market, they don't give a shit about actually benefiting developers.
Not much of that applies if you're just picking up the free stuff, though. I guess Epic could lock you out of it later, but you've already played it by then and you'll be able to get it cheap in other places if you want it in a Steam library or something.

I grew up having a different icon for every game, so this never really bothered me
Edit: timed exclusives don't bother me much either

Oh man, me too. I miss those days sometimes. Booting up the PC and seeing all those glorious windows 95 game icons.

What gets me are all those DRM-free installers I've downloaded from random things like Humble Trove and Itch.io giveaways. I can see my combined Epic, Steam, and GOG libraries in the (excellent) Playnite launcher, but when I use Windows Explorer to browse in my "Game Installers" directory, I don't know what I'm looking at half the time.
Blackout Z: Slaughterhouse edition is an addictive fast paced top down shooter game. Slaughter tons of zombies and try to avoid sharp saws while the battery of your flashlight is slowly draining.
Released in 2017, Steam reviews are Very Positive/Very Positive.

Abzu is a very nice time. Chilled diving, exploring type thing. Well recommended for a freebie.
And Sega have put Sonic 2 up for a limited freebie on Steam for Sega's 60th anniversary. Grab by Oct 19th.
