    Ys 9 update:

Best Ys game. The city setting and how it opens up is super cool. The collectible stuff is actually well done. Not an overwhelming amount and just enough info to keep you looking without feeling lost.

Weird thing: The skill sparking system is more random than I thought. I sparked the best normal skill for adol in like chapter 3. So I guess I just sorta have the best skill to use for a majority of the game until I get the final book one. Just feels weird as hell to be using the same skill for so much of the game. And then whenever I learn a new skill now it's like complete garbage compared to the one I have and clearly meant to have been learned way earlier. So I just sorta max them out real quick(they max out SO FAST in this one) and then go back to using my god tier OP skill. In chapter 6 now with every skill mastered and have only 1 skill left to learn naturally and then the ones from books.

Is it always that random? Not sure if I just used to luck into learning them in mostly an order that makes sense. Feels like a weird ass way to do that system.

I was wondering what you meant and yep I unlocked Adol's strongest level-based skill at level 13. I wondered why it was so much better than everything I had so far.

I'm an hour into Ys 9 and I honestly didn't go in expecting it to be about a team of gothic super-sentai vigilantes (complete with magic, quick-changing outfits!) but I am ALL IN!!

It's like Falcom saw Persona 5 and went "Let's put some of that...in an Ys game...on a budget"

    But it kind of works?

It was less the difficulty and more that I just can’t help myself farming in those two spots and lose focus every time. Dunno why.

the skeleman bridge is the perfect chaining spot

it's also one of the first real points to actually grind ap, which is sorely lacking prior to that point

Hi, so since my last post I did two limit breaks and got 4/5 of my artifact armor (the one for the chest piece is immediately apparently not meant to be done at 60)

Am now bashing my face against the level 60 limit break

The limit break quests are intensely frustrating for something that should theoretically be easy to balance considering you have to do them at a specific level ceiling

Well a lot of those quests were designed to be done with a full party at those levels, or even more people.

The AF quests for instance were added to the game when the cap was 60 or 65, but some of the more difficult ones were done with an alliance instead of a party.

I'm in chapter 5 of Ys IX and is it just me or do some of these side quests seem like they're pretty important to the main story?
Just did the second "go rescue a prisoner" side quest and boy all this stuff about the Knight leader imprisoning one of his second-in-commands because they started asking too many questions seems like something I'd expect to be in the main story.

Also these quests are about 90% of the screen time for second(??) Adol, which feels kinda crazy because figuring out what the hell is going on with that is one of the biggest questions this plot has right now.

With trusts that's probably fine for now. I'd advise getting /sam, /drg, and /nin available to you once you start doing more jobs. /sam gives you abilities to boost 2 handed options and /nin gives you dual wield. (/drg also gives you strong 2 handed options for weapon skills, it'll be a bit later that it's more useful than /sam)

There have been 3 times I’ve been teleported to boss fights so far

All 3 times, I’ve misjudged the moment I should summon my trusts

To be fair, BEFORE the teleporter/door that warns you WOULD make way more sense

Edit: I have now “beaten” Final Fantasy XI.

Ok that's even weirder that it happened for you too. Like either it's just triggering at the wrong time or some baffling design.

But yea I'm in the final chapter now and it's still the best move I have. So much damage and HUGE aoe.

Still don't quite have the final book skill but I should get that soon so I can at least use it for the final dungeon...

Yes the side quests have a lot of very direct links to the main story which is nice.

The chapters are pretty formulaic in the set up but everything works so well that I really do not mind.

Have had a blast with the game and even the story mysterious kept more interested than I expected from a Ys game.

I got to the Coliseum town of Octopath and decided, since I was a bit overleveled anyway, to challenge everyone I could. I won every fight except one against a particularly tough gladiator, so now the entire town is littered with unconscious people.

I am pretty sure I should be in jail.

Don’t worry, you verbally challenged them, so that’s the benign version of beating the crap out of everyone in a city.

The mean version involves siccing wild animals on them when they aren’t looking.

I beat the Shadow Lord under San d’Oria last night and then immediately zoomed over to Windurst to change my citizenship, forgetting to get the Trion trust before doing so

Alright got Adol to lvl 99.

    Got my ultimate gear.

All I got left is the special boss and the final dungeon.

On that I gotta say something I really appreciate: All the side stuff is available on this playthrough.

None of that bullshit locking stuff behind the end boss(Looking at you right now P5 Strikers..) or anything. It's all there so you can decide for yourself when you want to do it.

    Thank you Ys 9!

Finished Windurst, and therefore vanilla contenf, too late last night

One of the Windurst missions threw me a curveball by requiring either a specific party (impossible to solo) or a lengthy quest chain to open the backdoor

Got through it though and killed the Shadow Lord a third and final time

Now suspending my subscription and gonna play some non-MMOs for a bit

Was that the door where you needed a Red, White, and Black Mage to stand on the floor tiles? I never did the missions for the other cities, just for Bastok, but I remember when a friend from my first linkshell found those when the NA version of the game was only a week old, and invited me to come be his Black Mage to stand on one of them so we could find out what was inside. So I made the trek from Bastok to Windurst for the very first time as a level 14 Black Mage with no sub job. Just the journey took about an hour and a half. And then we opened the door, and immediately got wrecked by the shit on the other side that was completely out of our league.

    That’s the one!

There are level 90 mobs in that area and it’s expected for you to stealth there.

You can also do a 6-quest long chain that then gives you an extra quest that gives you a key that opens the sewers in Windurst, and by backtracking through there you can get to the backdoor of Horutoto ruins and finish the mission that way.

It was the only major speed bump as I did San d’Oria and Windurst at level 65 over about 3 days.

Sounds like they've made it even meaner in the years since then. The level cap was 75 when I started playing, and the only monsters in there were stuff that I later came back and casually wrecked once I'd maxed out Dragoon and Black Mage.

  • SimBenSimBen Hodor? Hodor Hodor.Registered User regular
Yeah they added some 90+ mobs in a bunch of old areas when they raised the cap to 119 to let players grind off them

Problem is, lower level players still have to go through there. Now there are also a bunch of options to get past those (Sneak/Invis, Unity warp, sometimes using a mount) but you got shit like, the only way to the glaciers is go through a tunnel that has those, and the second limit break (and rank 5 missions) are in the glaciers, so you NECESSARILY have to confront this at level 55 at most

For kicks I've decided to play through the original SNES version of Breath of Fire for the first time since like the W Bush years.

I don't know whether to be impressed or depressed about how much I remember. I've made it to Bleak without needing to consult a FAQ once. I even instinctually remembered to save the rediculous 65K GP for that fucking gold bar in Aurelia. Perhaps I'm simply a BoF savant.

It's one of those games that wants you to grind to level 3 or so right outside the first town.

BoF 1 (and 2) are really good for what they are. Though I'll stick to the GBA versions with there lower encounter rate.

I never actually finished BoF1. I am amused at how they gave you the ability to Voltron your useless party members (and only those specific ones) into a single additional party member that could actually meaningfully contribute.
