Alright, despite that start I am immediately really getting into 13 Sentinels. They really don't waste time getting to some interesting characters.
what's it about / like?
It's a game about high schoolers who can summon mechs and use them to fight kaiju.
So far the storyline is a convoluted scifi mystery where a lot is happening and the viewer is left to sort of piece together what is going on from a bunch of disparate character perspectives taking place in very different time periods (1940s, 1980s, etc). It seems very much set up to make the player go "what the fuck is going on??" over and over (at least at this point in the story), but already I'm starting to see how some of these things must fit together.
The art is spectacular 2d anime art that seems to be ranging between much too horny in the way that Vanillaware art tends to be and actually pretty tasteful/well-handled, but I will say they've managed to put a somewhat surprising amount of diversity in this cast of school uniform-wearing Japanese anime teens already.
Most interesting so far is a character who has been shown both wearing boys' and girls' clothing at different points and has said something to the effect of "there are binaries I don't fit easily into" and I'm interested to see how they handle this character moving forward.

This is Sprocket. Found her in the garage hiding under the snowmobile when she was a baby kitten who couldn't possibly be older than two months. She's now heading towards 12 this year.
Question: is 13 Sentinels trying to out-Homestuck Homestuck? Because that's what it seems like to me, TBH edit: as an outsider who's not too familiar with the game

i was going to say odin sphere predates homestuck and vanillaware has clearly had the multiple perspective storytelling as a bugbear for a while, but homestuck came out in 2009 and odin sphere released in 2008 so who can say

Also, PoE is fun
I've stumbled into a completely OP build this season and I'm basically turned into Harrow the Ninth, complete with waifish witch saying horrible shit to people
"Had you been my creation, brute, you would not have fallen so easily."
I press a button and a literal fucking skeleton army spawns around me, complete with a skeleton general, and then the screen just turns into a mess of particles as my 9 skeleton mages + however many in the army start casting lightning on everything
I've got 8 zombies, 2 stone golems, and 9 skeleton mages who just follow me around, and then I press the Army button and I get 30-some more skeletons
The resolution just tanks as the game tries to keep 60fps and my sound starts cutting out because there are so many layered sounds going on it just kind of craps out
Shit is wild

PoE character tier list:
Witch - lots of solidly creepy but funny shittalking
Ranger - very gay, not particularly subtle about it, best character art
Templar - good accent, thinks all the villains are stupid assholes, kinda crazy
Scion - weird murder prodigy who can learn anything quickly
Marauder - completely unamused and unimpressed by all these damn foreigners who conquered his people, takes a great deal of pleasure in smashing them.
Duelist - He's just kinda there. He likes fightin.
Shadow - creepy lines but they're just creepy. probably wears a fedora when he's not working

Anderson to Perera, OUT
thrashed through the line, a revolting hack, and Root clings on at first slip! That's a terrible way to give it away! Outside off, Perera thought he could just deposit this over the covers, but a hint of movement outside off was enough to catch the edge, and it's a sharp chance above the skipper's head. England have their opening, and it's a familiar tale of batsman error ...
4th Over and we've got our first breakthrough.
edit:
Anderson to Fernando, OUT
back of a length, inside-edge, and he's chopped onto his own timbers! Anderson mops his brow with a hint of embarrassment, but that was made by the bowler's extra nip off the seam. Fernando failed to account for the bounce, and couldn't get on top of the ball. This innings is in a bit of strife now!
Aaaand our second breakthrough. Still in the fourth over.

Some things are pretty ticky-tack but the skill tree iis like, the easiest part of the entire operation
You are only looking at 1/6th of it at a time and anyways you'll just follow a guide that has it already mapped out for you, for instance:

the way to play poe is to get into the skill tree and be like oh that's cool, and that's cool, and that's cool...
And then you get to around lvl 40 and realize that suddenly you're not very good anymore and also you're not actually good at anything uh oh
And then you make a new character and do it again
That's been my gameplay strat for years and it's great fun

Just wait until you're using the trade site because there's no auction house and you really need an item with 4 sockets, 2 red and 2 blue, with only the reds linked, and it needs at least 20 dexterity and also some life and resists
