i just watched promising young woman. if you have any sensitivity to the subject matter, it's not gonna be an easy journey.
it's also one of the most rewarding movies i have seen in years. like the pacing? the way plot and character are doled out? what it tells you? what it withholds? it's just tremendous.
the casting is meticulous and purposeful: even for characters that only have to or three scenes. like, there is a direct and purposeful clash between type-casting and people playing against type. it feeds into story and pacing in just the best way.
but, more importantly, there is a moment so perfectly timed and so fucking dark near the end....i had to stop myself from clapping at my television. it was so fucking bold and just this darkly comic release valve after all the everything. i don't typically have kind words for a single plot beat as being an entire movie's mission statement, but it is such a powerful punctuation man.
also? carey mulligan's american accent and mannerisms in this are basically a clone of eliza coupe's jane kerkovich. and that just adds to the experience, imo.

Brick is near the top of my list of movies that have a premise that really shouldn't work, at all, and yet absolutely do.

I don’t think brick would work as well as it does if it didn’t have the kitchen scene with the mom. But that moment of breathing and forcing them to switch modes is perfect and I B think it’s pretty much a perfect movie

It's a movie I watched a month ago that I still can't stop thinking about. It's such a powerful movie that has lots to say and it says it strongly in every facet of the movie, like you said, from casting, to writing, to wardrobe, to almost every clearly carefully done shot.
Also I like how people keep making Chocolate Factory or now a prequel while there exists a sequel to the book that no one has ever touched.
The sequel is kinda uneventful though?
Its got basically 2 unrelated set pieces
1 - They visit the space hotel, immediately flee when they see the Knids, then the Knids form a giant chain which burns up too close to the sun.
2 - Grandma... Georgina? Plays around with medicine making her too young/old whilst never leaving the bed.
Contrast that with Chocolate Factory which has a different room with different candy rules every 5 minutes.

I really hated it and other then the nightmare sequence and some other film techniques thought it was real bad.

Ya know, when I watch, say, Guardians of the Galaxy and see Chris Pratt shredded I don't quite buy into it.
But Kurt Russell in Soldier? I fully accept that this character should be built like a tank.

And yeah, Carey Mulligan just nails her role.

That has got to be among the most hardcore and cathartic (as well as grisly and cruel) endings I’ve seen in a long time
Most of the movie is a well paced and compelling thriller and then all of a sudden at the end it throws it to eleven and blows the doors off
That’s not really an endorsement either! Just a statement of fact

I didn't like it then and I still don't like it now!
Not holding my breath.
Probably the best thing Roald Dahl ever wrote
