If you haven't played this game what the fuck is wrong with you
Please explain below
it seemed pretty indie and quirky to a degree beyond my tolerance
I see the legitimacy of this concern but I would also say it is actually an exactly tolerable amount of indie/twee.
Like the cute twee shit is a very small proportion of what the game focuses around (aside from the fact that it's basically a little toy solar system), and used in a charming rather than cloying way.
Outer Wilds is genuinely one of the best games I've ever played and it is REALLY worth playing.
It is absolutely my one "I wish I could erase this from my brain and do it again" game because it is damn incredible. Easily a top ten game of all time. Easily.

Expectant parents fired a cannon to celebrate their baby shower. It exploded and killed a guest.
We will one day stop the hets
If you fire a cannon and kill a guest at the shower, what do you even do for the gender reveal? A scorpion missile filled with pink or blue antipersonnel metal balls?
Thousands of hot, local singles are waiting to play at bubbulon.com.
The most illustrative example of how "self defense" is just a polite way of saying "I love guns and fantasize about murder" is one friend of a friend who regaled us with a story about how he found a carjacker/suspicious person in his apartment complex parking lot and held them up, "hoping he reached for something so it would be self defense". Real fucked up.
what I look for in a space game is some combination of: space combat, exploring planets, resource management, betrayal, minecrafting, character customization, rude titties, rpg progression, lots of space guns, cool lore, tower of hanoi puzzle, spaceship customization, quirky companions, and space magic (explained by lore as being technology)
hopefully outer wilds can tick a few boxes
mass effect 2 hits a large number of these boxes and is my favorite space game, stellaris is also up there and ticks even more once you add steam workshop in
I don't know what an Outer Wilds is, but the description on wiki makes it sound pretty neat:
Outer Wilds features an unnamed astronaut player character exploring a solar system that is stuck in a 22 minute time loop, resetting after the sun goes supernova.

sounds like you want outer worlds rather than outer wilds

I watched a playthrough.

I got confused about the game named Outer Worlds so never got around to it

It's Majoras Mask in Space
I did not like Majoras Mask at all

And now that you ask, I’m not even sure where to start!
If it was a good chat it would be about Oscar Wilde.
but they're listening to every word I say
I would argue that the game handles its time loop mechanics with a lot less friction than MM does
Granted there are definitely times playing it where you will die on a loop and be like "fuuuuuuuuuuckkkkk I have to do this again"
But it's a good kind of fuck
it is DEFINITELY not majoras mask in space
I mean, it kind of is; everyone involved in the project explicitly said that MM was a major inspiration, and there are plenty of thematic similarities

Waiting for the deep discount sale.
Also potentially can't run on my PC.
It's on xbox too!
Break into someone's house and steal an xbox, it's worth it! Make them play it with you!
Is there a repeating time mechanic where certain things allow for progress towards the final goal?

Repeating time mechanic, yes.
"Certain things allow for progress" -
It is an information based metroidvania with realistic orbital mechanics basically.
A puzzle game where you can blast off to space.

Yeah, definitely not appealing
The ending actually made me slightly less depressed for a while!
I am not a doctor.

Bolded are featured in Outer Wilds
Italics are arguable
