Connecticut born here, and New Haven isn't nearly as rough as something like Bridgeport. I grew up in Fairfield, Trumbull and Norwalk. I've spent a decent amount of time in Milford, Chesire and used to go to New Haven for the mall (which has apparently been closed for 20 years, oops).. I never felt like it was a particularly rough area. Had no idea it was nearly as big as Bridgeport.

I haven't lived in CT since I was 19 so things may have changed in the last decade. But from what I recall it's nicer than you'd think, not exactly a small town tho

The major thing to think about with houses is that winter lasts forever as typical of new england, so make sure you get one with decent heating. Older homes are the ones to be wary of. My dad owns a condo in Norwalk still and it's pretty nice. I've never been a homeowner so I'll leave it to someone else for that
