Feel awful often, except...

Here is a weird one for you...

I've had weird health issues for the past 8-10 months... Nothing crazy or debilitating, just a general cough, fatigue, occasional headaches, and GERD-like symptoms. It hasn't stopped me from doing anything, but it has been irritating.

So, in (what I thought was...) unrelated activity, about 5 weeks ago, I decided I wanted to get back in shape. In high school, I was a cross-country runner, so I would run ALL the time, and FAR, sometimes 14-15 miles, and I played football, so in HS I was in amazing shape, but in the years since then, I haven't kept up with it like I should, only running occasionally. I'd get bursts of interest for 2-3 weeks, then I'd wane out again. So, basically, I've been slowly falling out of shape. So, a little over a month ago, I decided, enough was enough, and started running again.

At first, only 15-20 minutes, but I quickly started getting better, and within 2 weeks, I was hooked (once you get that first runner's high, it's hard to stop). Now, I am running almost 6:30 per mile and going for 60-75 minutes at a time! I've shed 20 pounds and look in much much better shape...

So, here is what's odd... I still feel generally off a lot of the time EXCEPT when exercising vigorously and for a few hours after... This has me baffled! Essentially I feel tired and run-down except when I run, which seems to invigorate me, make me feel absolutely fantastic for about 2-3 hours, then after that I go back to normal...

Any thoughts?

You lost 20lbs in 5 weeks? You might just be burning out. Your body is probably making you feel bad so you will rest.

I feel like that too...when I'm working out or being physical I get all "pumped up" and feel all good... but when I have to sit at a desk for 8 hours (work), I feel, just not bad... just tried/depressed... "un-pumped" as it where.

EDIT: also, how old are you?

    you have a good diet?

I would say I agree if it was someone else, but I've always been like this, since I was a kid... I can gain or lose weight in a very short period of time.

I'm truly not running beyond my ability... I don't push myself to the breaking point, or anything, I just run as fast as I COMFORTABLY can, and then go as long as I can...

I will concede that I may be burning myself out by going too hard too fast, so I'll slow it down a bit tomorrow, and see how that feels, but these symptoms have been with me long before I started running.

That sounds a bit like it, actually... But I like my job... I dunno, it's weird...

I'm not really looking for a fix, as the symptoms don't prevent me from living my life, but it is odd and I'm curious if it's anything I should be aware of (perhaps signs of a bigger problem, like depression)...

    23...

I eat as good as I can... Usually oats, coffee and an orange for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch (around 11, as I run around 3 everyday), and a varied dinner, but almost always pasta, chicken and a veggie, or a thick soup. I usually mix my meals up with a steak dinner once every 1-3 weeks (I love steak, but I try not to eat it too often), and I have a full-sized salad usually 3-5 times per week sometime during the day. I also drink a healthy amount of water and juices, and 2 full glasses of milk everyday.

I've always been extremely healthy over the course of my life, and I try to take good care of myself. Stress does get to me at times, and I have had a panic attack from severe stress in the last 12 months, but I have done a much better job at managing my stress over the last 3-4 months, with meditation, increased sleep, and now more exercise.

    your sleep is good?

One "trick" that works for me...even if it sounds weird:

I ussually do this, if I got something 'big" coming up... like giving a big speach, big project, etc.

It sounds weird... but I just um... stop... doing "stuff"... "down there" ... "with my self" and I don't let girls do stuff to me down there either... for a day or two.

Just saying, it gives me a burst of motivation and engery.

try it! Go for 2 days without doing nothing and see if you notice a change...

Well, whatever's wrong, odds are it's the endorphins that make you feel better when you're running. If I had those sorts of symptoms for that long, I would probably go to a doctor.

See, that's the frustration... I HAVE been to doctor's... Many of them... No one knows what the hell is wrong with me.

I've seen my PCP twice, a cardiologist, a urologists (sp?), had a chest x-ray and MRI done, blood work... As far as modern medicine is concerned, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with me...

My doctor is convinced it has to be stressed, so I am operating under that assumption, but I just don't feel that stressed... Yeah, I have the normal "work sucks" type stresses, but really I don't mind my job, it's just really busy and I have a lot of responsibilities. I guess, from what a psychologist has told me, some people deal with stress by subconsciously ignoring it, which the manifests in other ways, such as mysterious health problems, so I'm guessing that's what I have, but I'm doing all the "tricks" to relieve stress, such as meditation, extra sleep, extra sexual contact, exercise, and it won't go away...

    ...Maybe I'm over-thinking the situation?

I will also give the "no sexual contact" thing a try for a few days and see how I feel.

Did they rule out iron deficiency?

Even a slight deficiency can lead to the symptoms you describe. I had it for years before someone suggested it. A few pints of guiness a week has made an enormous difference to me.

Hmm, you might want to eat more red meat also.

    Wait...

That's an interesting thought... I haven't eaten red meat in nearly 3 months, and I've been consistently avoiding it... However, I am not a vegetarian (at all!), and I love a good steak, I just have been trying to eat leaner, whiter meats for health reasons, but maybe a good slab of beef once a week would help me keep my iron up...

    Worth a try?

These are just a few things I've found help me personally when dealing with fatigue issues.

take vitamins - though they are generally a waste of money (if you eat well balanced meals), you might have a deficency that your body needs.

sleep 8 hours every night, unbroken if possible. Not getting enough sleep will obviously make you more tired, on the flip side sleeping too much will do the same and make you feel sluggish. Try and set up a regular sleep schedule and stick to it.

If you are drinking a lot of caffiene, try to stop for awhile. You might have some headaches early on and feel tired, but generally after you break your dependency most people find they have more energy.

Break up your workout. Instead of doing a huge hour to two hour workout in one sitting, try and split it up throughout the day. Do some light jogging/aerobics when you get up in the morning, maybe something at lunch(if possible), and another in the evening. Often times people feel a lot mroe envigorated after a workout-out like you said. This is usually because of endorphins. If you split your workout throughout the day, you'll have a more steady supply instead of a huge dump all at once and feel more energetic.

Same goes with meals, try and split them up to 200-300 calorie meals/snacks every few hours. Though breakfast should be a bit bigger than this, maybe say 500 to get you going. This again helps your body take in a steady supply of energy and keeps your metabolism going.

If they did blood work at all they would have spotted anemia. Iron deficiency is, like, the very first thing they test for. It's an easy test.

When I feel off I usually take a multivitamin. one of those "everything a person needs." I actually take my wife's but the ingredients are the same. Hers may have more iron but we also don't eat much red meat. she never takes them so I might as well.

If it helps, then I know it was a nutrient deficiency. If it doesn't, I drink more water and take it easy for the rest of the day.

My "winning combination" for feeling off is a vitamin, an aspirin, and a tall glass of water. Unless it's after a night of some drinking, in which case it's the above plus a small amount of alcohol.

I'm not saying this will work for you, but taking a vitamin is an extremely cheap way to see if it's simply diet-based.
