Baffling change to me. I was honestly confused when I saw this in the news last week. Why make this change? Who benefits? How does this help the game?
In general it should make games more balanced. At the moment tank synergy is very powerful. It's very much the case where 1 + 1 can equal 3, or even 4. A good Rein/Zarya pair, or double shields can be really hard to overcome when the tanks on the other team can't or won't play a strong combo. Blizzard has been stuck trying to design for good main tank/off tank synergy, but then the balance gets off when people play 2 main tanks. So main tanks get nerfed, but then they end up too weak when not played in the expected metas.
Meh, I think a Hockey comparison would have been more on point. But, I guess fewer would have chuckled at the idea of all the Centers being upset at being out of a job.
It'll be a rough change for pro OWL tank players, but with millions of people still playing the game it doesn't make sense to design balance around the dozens of players at the top.
Maybe baseball would be more balanced with a big triangle instead of a diamond. It would increase the run distance between individual bases, and having to make 240 degree turns would disrupt their ability to run multiple bases. 🤪

This is why I think more games should have dynamic balancing mechanics; give the first tank on a team a booster(while tanks in general are less strong to begin with).

Makes me think games like this should start out using a ranking system. Basically, you have a lineup that's OP and you don't really get any points for winning the match.

Yeah, anyone following the current baseball meta knows that you really don't need to make it harder to run the bases right now. Most offensive builds have already opted out of the base-stealing perk and your solution would just make it worse. If anything, they really need to nerf pitchers right now. Nearly all of them have specced into high velocity/high rev builds which honestly are broken AF. About the only think that consistently slows them down is the dreaded Tommy John debuff, which can last up to 18 months before the timer expires.

The Trashcan exploit did result in some controversy and even a few high level bans. MLB claims they have patched the bug and it should no longer be an issue. But, MLB also claimed that they had not tweaked the ball settings, until finally acknowledging in the latest patch notes that had reverted to the ball back to a previous version.

I mean, they could start by cracking down on the illegal grip hacks that are responsible for a lot if not most of the really high rev pitches we're seeing

Simplifying and streamlining. With the addition of multiple builds to characters, something had to give.
The Devs.
It makes it easier for the Devs to balance classes, roles, and game maps.

Uh oh, nobody better tell Gabe about Blaseball then...!
I just realized we'd also have to adjust the metaphors for physical intimacy.

Pitchers hate this one weird trick
