The Locked Tomb Series (open spoilers for Gideon and Harrow! Nona the Ninth is out!)

edited September 2022 in Social Entropy++
The Locked Tomb is a (suddenly) four-book queer gothic fantasy series from New Zealand author Tamsyn Muir, with two books currently published and two more slated for fall 2022 and fall 2023!

THE NINE HOUSES make up a great necromantic space empire, ruled over by THE KING UNDYING, NECROLORD PRIME. Each house specializes in its own form of death magic and wages war with spell and blade. The time has come for the Emperor to choose new LYCTORS, immortal necromantic elites of unspeakable power. To that end he has called the heirs of each house, accompanied by their rapier-wielding cavaliers, to attend a series of trials in a SPOOKY-ASS GHOST CASTLE and prove themselves worthy of this honor!

CHILL at florid gothic descriptions of skulls and bones and blood and dust and black robes and pale weirdos and weird architecture!
THRILL at heart-pounding scenes of terror, action.... and romance
SPILL your drink when you find yourself laughing really hard at some dumb joke the POV character made but you can't get mad at all because she's one of the best new genre characters of the last decade at least!

Seriously, if you haven't read these books, they're a heady mix of horror, comedy, action and very gay longing, and if none of this pitch appeals then I am truly sorry for the loss you've sustained

I'm making this thread because it seems like we have enough people reading and discussing them to easily support its own discussion and because everyone else in the book thread is probably getting tired of us reaching critical mass

It's all just about bones. We're into bones

Open spoilers for Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth; please use spoiler tags for Nona and Alecto content, speculation, and leaked material.

What does everyone feel should be the spoiler policy in here?

  • knitdanknitdan Registered User regular
I suggest open spoilers for what’s been published (Gideon and Harrow) closed spoilers for speculation, outside authorial comments on the series, or discussion of any plot leaks that come out.

News I would say open as well, except recent news seems to reveal the existence of a new character in Alecto.

Some people would (wrongly) consider that a spoiler even though there’s no real context and it’s just a character name, but if it keeps things civil I’d be fine with making the effort.

Anything in the final act should be spoilers from Harrow.

    Is Gideon fair game?

It's so difficult to have a thread devoted to a focused topic like this is if isn't open spoilers, because then it becomes a thread that is only spoilers and people generically saying they liked the book. Though it also makes it hard for people currently doing their first read to participate until they finish.

I think it has to be open spoilers because if not this ends up being a train of nested spoiler quotations.

If people are looking for a general non spoilers discussion then the book thread can help them out?

I'm hearing a lot of nashing teeth about Nona The Ninth being a side story. Does anybody have confirmation/refutation of this? From the quotes I read my assumption was that the plot of the last book had grown beyond it's original book and part of it was being expanded into its own book.

Fine with it either way, I have plenty to read and trust that UNLIKE CERTAIN SERIES this will be resolved in Alecto

I adore 9/10 of Gideon the Ninth, hate the final 1/10, and so far the first 2/3 of Harrow the Ninth is... fine.

Ideally somewhere in the final 1/3 will be an event that redeems the previous final 1/10

    Ok i am an idiot

    Nona speculation
Nonagesimus. The weird unknown person in the final chapter who’s being taken care of and has no memory. It’s Harrow’s spirit in Gideon’s body.

    Ooooo this is good.

I don't remember nearly enough of Gideon or Harrow and I definitely need a reread.

Harrow ending, speculation, and leaks from the paperback version
I think that's still Harrow's body in the epilogue, with Harrow and Gideon's souls still in there but both perhaps submerged or dormant (which is why the amnesiac girl has both bones and a sword given to her, to trigger one or the other soul to resurface; rereading it now I also note that she isn't hurt at all by eating extremely hot food, which I assume is the Lyctoral healing factor working)

An interesting detail from the paperback extras, some of which are a report by the Second House necro while she's a captive of Blood of Eden, is that BoE has Gideon's body, which will not rot no matter the conditions they store it in

Of course as that takes place between books and the epilogue is sometime later, I suppose that could be Gideon's body, but I just don't know how Harrow's soul would be in it

I honestly wonder if Gideon would've gotten better on her own after getting impaled if it wasn't for the whole lyctor thing.

tbh she may well do...albeit missing a soul, which would raise a few wrinkles down the line. Swordfight between Gideon driving Harrrow's body and Gideon's mindless body, Gideon spends the whole fight talking about how hot she is

What with Gideon being the child of "God" and the fact that she and Harrow seem to have accomplished something closer to the real lyctoral process than the rest of them, yeah, that seems right.

Considering that her pops is the damn Necrolord Prime final Boss material who can recover from being completely disintegrated? Yeah, I'd say it's likely.

    My thoughts
I dunno about super ultra evil per se, but he's an awful, awful person who uses straight up mind control and blows up the souls of planets willy nilly. There is nothing suggesting that he's anything but an abusive, gaslighting asshole who wants to keep his power and his pets.

    Probably just super evil.

I didn't like Harrow the Ninth that much. From when they get to the station until the climax, it feels like it just spins its wheels hinting at stuff and having the characters be miserable. There's the occasional joke or explosion of gore lightening things up, but all and all it just really dragged for me. Things do pop off pretty well at the climax, at least.

    Thoughts:
It probably comes down to how culpable for the whole genocide of the Solar System he is. Did he do actively do it to become all Necrolordy or did he just survive it and by doing so got access to all that necro-mojo. I kind of think it has more to do with his bond with Alecto and her possibly being something other than human. Though that could easily be linked into the whole apocalypse thing.

Also everybody: Harrow paperback version is going to have an expanded glossary and a short story featuring
    Judith, the Second House necromancer.

How that sure sucks if you've already bought it huh? Well...Amazon's preview includes the glossary AND the entire short story. Click the "Look Inside" entry on the picture and search for Glossary and then "Intelligence Files" for the short story.

The Glossary clearly lays out some stuff that we have not previously been given good information on.

    Just started Act 5
So we just left the timeline where the genocide also killed Gideon, and now we're in the one where it never happened so Harrow isn't a necromancer.

    This is weird, but interesting.

I'm operating under the absurd assumption that Alecto was the first resurrection beast. It would kinda make sense with one of them being unaccounted for and apparently verboten, the other lyctors fear and disgust regarding her, and here apparent hostility towards them.

It is outright stated that the resurrection Beasts are the souls of the dead planets that Necrolord Prime killed.

I don’t THINK he’s lying about that regard, because it tracks. There are nine houses, nine resurrection Beasts, and nine planets in our solar system (which is kinda implied to be where this takes place)

yeah and I think when Earth's resurrection beast took form it looked like Alecto and John somehow decided he could make nice with it

I think there's things John lies about and things he absolutely believes to be true but is dreadfully wrong about, and "I can do the fusion dance with the collective soul of my dead homeworld" is one of the latter
