Hey, how does progress / progression work? Can I join friends who are further along than I am? Or they'll need to replay earlier content with me?
I’m fairly certain you can; it just won’t give you level progression/start points for it. So if you haven’t completed act 1 and join friends in 3 you won’t unlock those levels as start points as they go; but you’ll still get supply points to unlock deck cards etc

I did a full run of Act I with discord rando's and it's insane how many stacking bonuses you can pick up, if you pool money for all the team upgrades and rely on toolkits to generate mods. Look at this:

So the pub matchmaking is dire - people with no comms, etc.

I don't remember L4D being nearly this bad

Is there a discord you guys use?

Most likely due to being on Gamepass you’ve got lots and lots of people who don’t usually play these games giving it a go.

I'm just transitioning to this. My first 2 discord experiences were in the top 10% of my Quick Play experiences for sure. Just everyone having mics is a great boon. I just used the first one that showed up: https://discord.me/back4blood

Another real weird thing: This game on PC seems to route its voice chat through the Xbox Gamebar. This means the voice chat ingame doesn't respect the "Audio Output" option in the menu. In my case, that meant game audio in my headphones and then the people just came out of my speakers.

I don’t really understand the people (mostly on Reddit) going on about how Recruit is this brain dead cakewalk where it’s basically impossible to die. That has certainly not been my experience as someone who is decent but maybe not great at games, especially on the later act 1/act 2 levels. Maybe with a coordinated team and/or knowledge of the levels and a well built deck, but certainly not for people new to the game or genre I’d think. Acting like Recruit is basically baby’s first shooter feels trollish at best.

Just had a great run with Pubs. We went through nearly the first act with minimal problems. Me and one other guy using mics. Got enough supply points for a ton of cards too which was great.

It can definitely be a bit swingy. My brother and I have finished clearing the campaign on Recruit (duo'd with bots). Some stages felt super easy and others were very intense and were tough with the Ridden spawns. We had a hell of a time clearing:

(Spoilers in case anyone hasn't gotten to it)
When you're trying to collect some dude's research materials in a big house while Ridden are constantly spawning. The sheer number of Ridden with the lack of an objective marker for the boxes (they should have one when you get close) was an absolute nightmare. Didn't help that we had a Charred Ridden corruption card, so each group had a bunch of burning zombies that just did damage by getting near you

This kind of screams the Souls like game mentality of "Git gud scrub" and it sucks.

Recruit definitely has some spots that are tough and will become even tougher without a premade group. Even with my play group we regularly accidentally set off alarm doors or cars by shooting them because we didn't notice and had to deal with a horde. I imagine it would be a giant pain in the ass to deal with that with randoms, especially if headsets aren't being used.

I'd recommend just ignoring the git gud clowns on reddit if possible and just enjoy the game.

I can see recruit being tough for people new to this type of game; I think most of the it’s too easy complaints are from people (myself included) who had hundreds of hours in left 4 dead 2 which translates pretty directly to this game who recruit is very easy to; but you still need to grind recruit for cards to get going as regardless of how good you are you’ll get destroyed on veteran; especially later acts without some of the cards quit a ways down the supply lines.

The problem isn’t that recruit exists or that there are people who it’s perfect for; its that for vets coming from other co op shooters it’s pretty boring but you *need* to grind it first

Well, right. As best I can tell there are two issues:
    1. People are experienced with these sorts of games being "forced" to go through Recruit in order to unlock the cards they need to mitigate Veteran and higher
    2. People who aren't experienced jumping directly into Veteran and just getting decimated/ruining runs for other people because they have no idea what they're doing

I'm not really sure what to do about #1 because it's a structural issue (maybe tuning Act I Veteran a little easier?), but the latter seems to stem almost entirely from messaging. The descriptions make it sound like Recruit is "easy mode," and also tells people they'll be penalized in supply point gain for playing it (even though playing missions on Recruit is still a pretty rapid card unlocking pace). If they reframed Recruit as the intended entry point for the game and also referred to its SP gain as the baseline, I bet fewer people would be jumping into Veteran utterly unprepared.

I might be done playing this until they fix the progress not saving/unlocks not happening. It sucks I played for 3+ hours and got no supply points despite being online in a group, also I didn't unlock the other 4 characters either from doing the "tutorial" online.

On the pc gamepass version the extra character unlocks and supply points popped up for me almost an hour after I’d done it when the achievement popped (they all seem incredibly delayed for me) so fingers crossed it pops for you eventually

I think some of the difficulty is that the battle royale elements of the gun acquisition make people rush to loot first to get the good stuff, and don't properly outfit the whole team and stick together.

Fortnite trained a whole generation out of how to play with a team

I also just started Act 3 on recruit, and it felt like a pretty sharp difficulty jump from Act 2. Had two random groups wipe once each on the first and second level.

I then decided that maybe trying to start Act 1 Veteran would be a good place to pick up some SPs because I have some good decks and experience now, should be fine.
Lol nope, back to Recruit forever.

Act 4 goes places, it definitely goes places. Honestly I think I would have liked a bit of a lead up to that fight, but as it is it's probably designed that way otherwise people would never finish it.

I'm interested in unlocking more cards, but really survability seems a must for a lot of fights, either by overkilling enemies early on, or being able to survive while your team does. And putting cards to helping the team. Like I initially pshawwed the buffs when people go down cards, but man those are run savers, though better at the end of your deck then the start.

My friend, my brother, and I beat act 3 on recruit, gonna do act 4 tonight.

We were getting real cocky up to act 3, talking about how we are ready for veteran.

Act 3 beat the shit out of us. We only used 1 continue but the act was a constant struggle to survive and really had us rethinking our decks. My friend was going pure melee and there are a lot of parts in act 3 that just dunk all over pure melee.

There were a lot of fun/interesting levels and made me rethink my desire to have a versus campaign mode. Act 3 alone has so many points where any kind of special ridden coordination is a guaranteed win.

Looking forward to starting up veteran, I have 9 pages of cards and page 9 is like 2 shy of being full. I have some really useful cards.

I was playing around with the card that let's me have 2 primary weapons and I was going for reload with a 20%, 30%, and 50% increase but the 50% removes ADS and I was using assault rifles and shotguns so I didn't use it. Might try it with LMGs and shotguns though. Figuring out what is really important and what isn't has been tough. I've been using a lot of cards that reduce my defense by 5% so I think I might stop using those in veteran.

I've also been playing a bunch of Karlee specifically for her ability to see hazards but the range on it is kind of bad. It is great for seeing wall monsters but seeing alarm cars, alarm doors, and birds isn't that effective. They don't normally get highlighted till I'm almost on top of them.

One trick for alarmed doors that I didn't know about until this reddit post - if you bash the walls next to them they'll attract Ridden attention, and those Ridden will then try to break down the door from the inside; once they've visibly damaged the door you can finish breaking it down without triggering the alarm.

I will say Melee is 100% viable through all parts of the game, you just have to treat yourself as a trash compacter for the horde, and stay near your shooters.

The tech I discovered last week was that if you put an exploding item next to an alarm door and blow that up, it destroys the door without any alarm! So we tech'd every door we could find with gas cans and much fun was had.

I kind of liked going through the same areas later on in acts, it kind of made it alive I guess that things were changing a bit. Not major changes but it was kind of cool.

Is there a way to test cards in the camp? I'd really like to be able to see how some of the cards interact without having to wait to get them in a run.

Also, the amount of time that my friend, brother, and I spend goofing off in the shooting range is a little crazy. It is a lot of fun to mess around there though.

I'm a support player at heart, so Mom or Doc are my go to Cleaners. I might give Karlee a spin with her "detect hazards" passive, as that's a great support / utility ability.

Also, the Hag is pure nightmare fuel. They don't take as much punishment as the other "boss" mutations (Breaker, Ogre), but, man, they are just gross. It just tries to swallow a Cleaner and then full sprints it out of there.

Oh yeah, the Hag moves. It grabbed me in the level where you have to cut through the funeral home. My brother gave chase but the Hag ran right through the incinerator area and my brother didn't notice the fire until too late and then get downed / killed by being roasted alive. Since we duo with bots, the bots basically just watched as I was carried away and then buried alive by a walking nightmare. It was a complete shit show
