[Back 4 Blood] from the developers of L4D, Out Now and on Game Pass!
It's funny, but I literally watched that today and it made me realize two things. Firstly that I'm glad I skipped Back 4 Blood for the most part and secondly, just how much effort had been put into Left 4 Dead that I've never really appreciated. For those who want a TL;DR despite being a much older game on an older engine, Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 are basically technically superior games in nearly every manner that's important. This is assuming that the in game footage of Back 4 Blood is fair to the current state of the game.
I think there's room to improve on B4B but fundamentally this is what I meant upthread when being critical of the game. It's a half step to something as great as L4D. Pick any one aspect and L4D1/2 did it better somehow. The flow of the game, map design, character design, voice work, music, tone, overall atmosphere and just plain how fun it is to play. I wanted so dearly to love B4B but I can't lower my standards from the Valve games after I sunk 1000+ hours into them.
The part that hurt the most about that is the Versus mode bit. I loved Versus in L4D, it was what held my attention long term with the game.

Ironically, I just got it and am interested in playing it
The game serves as a great advertisement for L4D, which for the next 5 hours you can still pick up for $2 each, $3 for both, and those games still hold up.
I have so many hours in l4d2 that if they offered a PHD program I would be a Doctor.
All but one of my friends and me have abandoned b4b yet we will still get together for campaign or versus in l4d2 every now and again. Some of the fan made campaigns are REALLY well done. The lack of user made campaigns is what kept the longevity for us. Sadly b4b suffers in this area. L4d2 wins as the game that has been on my hard drive the longest and the game 1st install when I build a new PC.
Definitely L4D is amazing, but I still found B4B very enjoyable. It was great to play through the campaign with my group of friends. Lots of tense moments and I enjoyed the flexibility in how to build your character with the cards.

Yeah if they added this ability to build your character a certain way into L4D then I'd 100% make the switch.
I guess I can appreciate they tried something new, I just wish they could have made an engine that's up to snuff for a game ten years older. Not to be a Debby downer, I wanted to love the game so badly. I think if they keep at it and work on the game it could be great. I want them to do another as well. I have faith there's talent at Turtle Rock. They need to use them effectively.

I dipped my toe in and liked what I've seen so far. I understand what puts people off, but I think it can keep my attention for awhile, if I had people to play with.
Edit: Just went through the first act, and yeah, I like how the missions have varied objectives.

New update for B4B has been pretty fun. Seems like procedurally generated tunnels that have a random chance to spawn on maps. Not sure if it is only certain maps or any maps and they seem to spawn towards the end of the map so you either go into the safe house or you go into the ridden hive.
Some of the new cards have been kind of brutal.

I never fear death or dyin', I only fear never trying.
Did they ever announce local co-op plans? I remember some quote that boiled down to "maybe."
This game had such a weird rollout. It seemed like the gaming sites were full of hype, then had mostly positive things to say with the review versions of the game, and then totally 180ed and tore the game up after release.
I am a hardcore l4d fan. I have uninstalled this after running through the entire campaign once. I lasted longer than my friends who bought it. My final evaluation is that it is a mediocre game. Not terrible-not great. It is the movie you enjoyed while watching it that you look back and can't remember anything about. I regret paying full price for it.
Are the bot friends good enough to play through solo/offline?
Uhhh... It's kind of like L4D. They're fine but they don't use items so it might actually make it harder. If you post here I'm sure someone will join you.
IMO: 3 bots > 2 bots and 1 bad player (aka running ahead, not helping, etc) though.
There is one level, on the boat, that will be impossible to solo. You have to set 2 bombs and since the bots don't help you have to run through a gauntlet of zombies four times.
Is it possible to play with one or two friends but no bots or am I doomed to buy copies to my friends?
Honestly I'm pretty sure it's doable with 2 players and 2 bots. You will always have 4 characters playing though. So if there are 3 players there will be 1 bot. At that point it's probably ideal because of their accuracy and I'm pretty sure they have unlimited ammo.

e: Ah you mentioned after their review.

And hey, maybe someday they'll add local co-op to B4B!
