    Hey this ladys a pill

oh dang is she a milkshake duck, or just hard to swallow in the annoying sense? Thought the various tossing of props were funny, but will def remove the vid if there's some underlying horror there.

I assume hobnail was using pill in the old timey sense of entertaining/funny/a little bit weird.

winners get decided early on and the game is just about slowly playing out a losing hand until people get bored enough to leave

a lot of people don't get that a lot of board game innovation has just left all the board games they're familiar with behind

even settlers of catan, a lot of people's go-to for "no see board games have more going on than you knew" is a 26 year old game

I've always been kind of mystified by the discussion and debate around Monopoly being a bad game, cuz like... that's sorta a feature, not a bug, and I assumed it went without saying?

The game is for children ages 8 and up, and children 8 and up are fuckin' horseshit at games. The game lets you Do Stuff, all while the results of the game are generally just determined by random luck. Which is shit gameplay for adults, but it's great when you need a game for kids to play, or to play with your kids, because now the stupid little pukes actually have a chance at competing.

Sure it's a terrible game for adult game night, but that's never been why its sold so many copies.

I also think it's good to point out that some classic board games still hold up really well. Or, I guess, board game adjacent? I dunno. Anyways, like...Uno, Scrabble and Scattergories are my go to examples of classic board/card games that I'd play right now with the right group.

Kids are competing at everything, all the time, I don't think they need a bad board game to enable it.

actually, I'd argue that I prefer War to Monopoly? It's 100% random, sure, but at least it's over relatively quickly.

As I am sure we all know by now, Ian from Forgotten Weapons is a walking dictionary of historical firearms knowledge. A discerning and educated gentleman, one could call him a sommelier of guns.

Anyway, he's started doing a series called Ian's Customs where he talks about the particular weapons he owns and turns out they are they most slapped together hobo trash rifles I've ever seen and it makes me incredibly happy.

Compared to Monopoly, though? Those 26 flips are way faster.

I suspect that was just for the vid, otherwise the alarm is useless, much like how you can skip most of MedSci if you already know the access code.

Oh yeah, I'm sure that's not the actual code they use, but making it that for the video was neat.

He had skin cancer back in the 90s but got it treated. I don't know if it came back or if it was an unrelated cancer, but god. This sucks.

I guess the signs have been there for a while - in some appearances on 8 out of 10 cats in 2017 he was bald and had a kind of patchy voice, which I have to assume was probably due to treatments.

War is not 100% random and in fact you can get about a 58% win rate with the right strategy against an opponent playing without any strategy.

...I assume that we're not talking about the same game, then, because the War I'm used to is "split a deck in half, give one half to each player, have 'em flip the top card to see who has the highest number, once you're out of cards the person who won the most flips is the winner"

Zero player input, and arguably not even a game.

E: We're talking about almost the same game; War is commonly played until one player is totally out of cards, with winning cards put on the bottom of your deck. There is, in fact, decisionmaking involved.

You choose the order you return cards to your deck. You can follow simple algorithms to stack your deck favorably to win wars more often. You can also, in theory, count cards to know where opponents aces are (+/- a single card) and avoid putting high cards against them, but that's tedious

Just finished watching this and am more convinced than ever that people migrating from independent message boards and such to huge platforms like Twitter was a mistake.

I haven't watched this yet but I intend to when I find the time. I'm a fanartist and I talk to other artists and it's really weird right now. A little while back an artist was kicked out of a zine for saying that while she personally didn't ship Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey, she thought it was ok if other people did. And she was labelled as a pedo apologist and kicked from the project. A lot of artists are afraid of drawing certain ships or characters because the harrassment on social media is not worth it.
It's a really interesting video. The overall topic is fandom shipping wars, however the core of the video is about people taking binary sides and going to extremes to interpret anything said or done by someone on The Wrong Side as being yet more proof of how terrible they are, justifying all the terrible shit that results from a mass of people getting mad at an individual online.

It's pretty much the exact cycle of dunking on visible people in online spaces (primarily women, POCs and queer people) we've been seeing intensify over the past few years.
