Mini fridge advice

DrezDrez Registered User regular
Hi, so, does anyone have any experience with mini-fridges and have any particular advice?

I don't need anything huge. I put together a little coffee station in my bedroom. I have a cappuccino/espresso maker and the newest Keurig. The only thing I can't really do from my bedroom is put milk or creamer in my coffee because I leave those things in my refrigerator which is in my kitchen about 4 seconds away from my bedroom. I'm trying to make my life more efficient and shaving off that 4 second walk TO and FROM the kitchen will give me back at least 16 seconds per day (assuming I have at least 2 cups of coffee. If I have more cups of coffee, the amount of savings is enormous, comparable to an AT-AT from Star Wars which I gather is really quite large as robotic war machines go.)

I'm a little frightened about people insulting the size of my mini fridge but I'll cross that fridge when I come to it.

Anyway. at minimum I need to be able to store 2-4 "tall" items:

- 1-2 bottles of flavored creamer
- 1 quart of half-and-half
- maaaaybe 1 quart of milk, but I prefer the much more fattening half and half

I'd also like room for a few cans of Coke or whatever. But not Pepsi. In fact, if there are any mini fridges out there that are incompatible with Pepsi and won't even allow Pepsi to enter the fridge, even if it's a laser security system that detects and disintegrates Pepsi if it crosses the doorway threshold, I would favor that particular model over others.

Also maybe a bottle of Prosecco or a couple of beers.

Thank you in advance.

We used something very similar to this as our primary fridge unit when we first moved into our house and discovered that both of the refrigerators that came with it were bad for various reasons. I would recommend checking your local freecycle/craigslist/nextdoor whatever marketplaces first. I think we paid about $100 for ours and it was practically brand new. I can't remember the brand though.

Thanks! I was actually looking at that one earlier.

I also think this one is cool, no pun intended. : https://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-2-6-cu-ft-mini-fridge-black/6145102.p?skuId=6145102

It’s a little larger than I intended but it’s still not that big.

If you live near a college, move out day at the start of summer is basically free mini-fridge day, which is probably not helpful since it is now the end of summer

Interesting. It's OK though. I'm lazy and like new things and ~$140 is cheaper than I expected to pay. I kinda timed it around Labor Day to take advantage of sales.

I can't track down the links due to internet issues at the moment, but I have a Galanz retro style mini fridge I picked up a couple years ago that I absolutely love. I got a bigger one that came with a proper freezer and it can store a lot of stuff. You would probably need to take out one shelf for the tall stuff, but it still leaves a lot of room. My only complaint is the handles aren't metal which wouldn't be a problem if not for the asthetic of the fridge.

The cool thing about all mini fridges I have looked at is that a soda can dispenser is kind of expected. I picked up a different one (don't judge me) for my office at Target recently and all of them I looked at were super happy to advertise how many cans of Coke they could store.

How much does the noise bother you, as most minifridges are quite loud? Even a regular one makes more noise that you expect, the kitchen is usually a noisy place so it's not that noticeable. Anything less than $200 is going sound like there is a fan on in the room (on account of the fan that is always on).

A bit of sound proofing around it, under a desk might be worth looking at too

I ended up buying the Insignia 3.3 cubit one because it was a huge sale, like $60 off.

Didn’t think of the potential noise but I already have an AC, air circulating fan, and a computer essentially permanently on so I’m not worried. It’s already very noisy in here.

Do they make mini fridges aimed specifically at small offices? I would love something that could hold like 4-6 sparkling ice cans (which are a bit taller than a 24oz soda), and while I'd love to be able to put like a sandwich or microwave lunch in one, I know that mini fridges tend to be inefficient in that regard. I just don't want a giant-ass mini fridge to haul around.

The biggest thing you'd probably have to worry about is getting approval from your office manager/property manager to put one in.

Even a 1.7 cubic foot is a bit bulky though and they don't go much smaller than that without losing efficiency, or at least they didn't last I looked into them.

Ummmm…why would I need approval to put one in?

edit: I pay for my own electricity and I don’t see anything in my lease about getting approval for appliances or anything.

edit 2: Didn’t realize you were responding to Athenor.
