12:07 Central Update (5 mins ago) : found the web API service is failing so we're restarting it. Currently matchmaking is still down which will affect login and scene to scene transition
and general "yep a ton of people and we're cranking up all of the dials as we speak".
Yeah crazy to think that is not peak either. It is pretty much always the way that the numbers that play on day one is some high multiplier more of what they "expect". Has happened to pretty much all popular online games other than D4 lately.
It's a shame their queue system shit the bed. There seemed to be one in place when I first tried to create a character, but now I just get the generic online unavailable message.

From their discord announcements, it sounds like their login servers went down hard so there's just no one getting in at all.
They're posting frequent updates there if you're interested. Hoopefully back up soon.

All the streamers are doing offline mode, so that was a good move getting that in place before launch or else this would be Wolcen 2.0
Yeah unless you're very ARPG novice there's really no reason to build guide.
Just follow the general RPG rule of trying to focus on one type of damage and stack modifiers for that (unless of course you're playing a skill that specifically cycles damage types). If you like lighting things on fire, stack a bunch of ignite, fire damage over time, and fire mods. The only way to feel wimpy is to try to use like 5 different damage types at once and going super jack-of-all trades.
The tooltips are very good and won't drive you insane like PoE's do. You don't need an out of game tool or a 20 page forum discussion to figure out what mods affect the skill you're using. Aand respeccing is pretty easy and forgiving early on.
Another tip for new players is that "increased damage" is additive and "more damage" is multiplicative (i.e. significantliy better). So when I look at a skill I want to use, generally the order of operations is 1) how to do modify/convert this skill to better fit the theme of my build? These are things like cast more projectiles or proc a skill when this skill is cast, etc., and the skill node shape is a hexagon rather than a circle (which is for passive gains to the skill), 2) how to I get as many "more damage" nodes as possible, 3) tweak things for quality of life (faster cast speed, mana cost refunds, etc.)
I remember people thinking there wouldn't be much of a surge for the 1.0 release.
That's quite a lot for noon in the middle of the week.
I just remember someone saying it would kill off D4 lol
But even with that surge they aren't at D4's current player count, and this Season is Diablo's lowest player count Season.
Still, good to see another IP being built from the ground up, and their approach on skills keeps it very interesting. I'm excited to see where it goes. I know I'll be playing most of next week.
Heh sounds like they're in "everything is on fire all hands on deck" mode as of the last discord update.
It has been refreshing and cool with how transparent they've been though. From the stuff they posted before their reddit AMA, it sounds like they were running bunches of stress tests and involving 3rd parties and all of that good stuff that you would want them to do for a big launch. It sounds like they were relatively prepared, aren't completely shocked by the load, but hey all it takes is one weak link in the chain to fail and here you are.
No big shock, and the open communication is cool. Hopefully not a long term issue.
Yeah I think the "kill D4" stuff is crazy, but they hit that peak basically at launch (at a time a lot of people are at work, on a Wednesday) and it hasn't gone up because the servers are pretty much dead. Too early to tell on any of that stuff.
thats the player count with a huge number of people not being able to connect though
Yeah for sure, the number is prob higher, I'll be super surprised if it hits a million though. Honestly if they break 300k that's a massive achievement.
I'm just talking in comparison to the comments made earlier about it killing off D4. That game has user counts in the millions.
I don't think this game is going to be a repeat of Palworld, Enshrouded or Helldivers 2. I'd love for it to do that well, this genre is one of my fav's, but I think it's improbable at best.
They say they're still nervous to give the all clear and there is a login queueue, but have some friends in. Lol interestingly enough, basically as soon as I got home from work too. I have called off my botnet.
But have to run to the gym anyways, and I will leave the queue like a nice person in the mean time.

I also remember that people said Diablo 4's Steam player count would be higher.
Really cool to see that nice 1.0 release jump like I suspected would happen (because folks, like me, would be waiting for 1.0 release to jump in). Shame my finances are currently in a loop and I can't really jump on it just yet.
30k for secondary market location seems good. To compare to PoE and its offical launcher (Steam is its primary market lets be real) is about 60% that or less according to a slip from Chris a year ago or so (if you also take off a % for the bots which would all use the standalone client).
I dont really care about the measuring thing though. LE ended up being at the levels that a lot of us thought might cause problems. Putting a queue and pop caps (by the looks of it) isnt really a scalability "fix". But it does look to make it playable really. But I dont know if they have an afk timer though.....?
Yeah when I saw them mention scalability and elasticity I was comforted because I figured they had some extra power ready to go for release. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have done much of anything. Although maybe the practice they got from the third party testers helped them troubleshoot the issues faster? Who knows. You guys called the server melting issue for sure.

lol I’m curious who would of said that, it doesn’t make sense with the steam release coming way after regular battlnet release.
I feel like the Battle.net store doesn’t have the same stigma as Epic.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of that base is double dippers. I saw a lot of Steam Deck folks on Reddit saying they grabbed a 2nd copy there. Some of the battle.net updates messed with Linux based launchers.
This site shows the current D4 number at 196k which appears to be lower than usual, guessing a lot of people moved over to LE. Be interesting to see how this trends continues considering the current feelings on S3
Yeah I definitely would double dip if I had a steam deck for sure lol. Being able to kick back on my bed, watch some Game Grumps and kill some demons. Sounds like paradise.
Yeah I hope they tighten up the LE control scheme for deck, it’s a bit cumbersome to play, especially inventory management. Still lots of fun though, this genre is great for SD.
I expect that will get some attention down the road. Easier for D4 with them having a console release.

Have you messed with it since 1.0? That was supposed to be a fairly big change -- full gamepad support with proper interface for inventory management and stuff. Haven't tested it to confirm though!
oooo I havent tried that yet, I'll give it a go tomorrow then. The inventory part was the only aspect that really felt painful. Everything else was easy enough to deal with.
Lol not sure if a coincidence or not, but switched my login server to South America and got in instantly.
They do say they're continually improving servers, and it seems like the people in are doing fine. 150 ms ping it is! Too terrified to logout and try US Central.
Edit: Friend just tried right after and got in on US Central, so maybe getting better.
Everyone drop your account names so everyone can get maximum bees! I need two more friendos to use mine: akThera. (gonna let husband and son swap their codes so they get some bees too instead of both giving me MAXIMUM BEES)

Two things that make this better than PoE, despite the inventory similarities: That button that sends all the crafting materials into your forge thingie. And the "sort" button that then does the tetris-ing for you. It's not perfect tetris, but it helps a lot. Drop out the white and blue items, click the "store crafting" button, click "sort," and you saved yourself like 10 PoE minutes.
Can't guarantee you'll instantly get in on the server side, but it does seem to be rapidly getting better.
I didn't queue for hours or anything, just got in on first try after a restart and so did my buddy. I see Corrigan on too, and it seems like once you're in it's stable through zone changes.
It does have an internal friends list -- I thiiink it's just your Steam name?
Also I did have like a 30 second "oh no I'm done for" load when trying to enter a new zone (the type where you can move around but have the loading icon), but it did eventually load!
Last played a year ago, playing a new offline Warlock now and the combat feels better than what I remember. I mostly just played spin-to-win Crusaders (one sparkly goodie good damage and another evil murky goth damage) because those felt right to me and most other stuff didn't. But now hellfire fissure thing has a nice boom to it and spraying a bit more hellfire on enemies with the channeled cone seems alright too. Got to 27 or something, only reason I quit is I'm old enough to fuck up my own back if I keep on playing.
Two thumbs up so far instead of the expected one, I'll probably play this for a fair amount while I'm waiting for spring to happen in these parts. Winter sucks.

Yeah they added a new animation system in 1.0 alongside the graphics upgrades, and it seems to have helped the feel of the combat quite a bit from what I can tell so far. And I liked it before!
I remember the studio head posting shortly after D4's release when the animation system was being praised -- it was basically "Yeah they're great! Our animators are taking a really close look!" and if that's apart of what they did, awesome.

I didn't even know Online was down cause I just went straight into Offline mode for my hour of play during my lunch break.

Not really worried about online unless they add interesting seasonal stuff like PoE or D3.
I've added: CorriganX, akThera, Fiatil

I didn’t even notice- does this have a friends list separate from Steam? I’ll have to double check what my name is
