Rewatching Alien Covenant and Prometheus and while I still think covenant actually at least has some good action sequences with the alien I’ve actually turned around on Prometheus and find it the better film. They’re both still really bad but I feel like Prometheus is more confident in what it wants to be

And despite hating both films overall I’m still kind of annoyed that we won’t get the planned final movie of the trilogy, since it ends on such a stupid downer and despite not liking either film I still want closure

The third movie would not have been better, or saved the trilogy. Trust me on this.

*looks into the distance, haunted by the memory of Episodes III and IX*

Oh I have no doubt about that, but some part of my completionist brain just wants it for the sake of symmetry

the wife wanted to re-watch Sam Raimi Spider-Man so we did and that movie still rules

obviously the best scene is still the part when Green Goblin throws a bomb that turns like five dudes into skeletons but equally impressive is that it fits as much story as it does into two hours

Prometheus has like 10 people in it that are supposed to be doctors and every one of those doctors is dumber than a sack of bottles.

Covenant has that beat, it’s a space colonisation ship and nobody follows any quarantine protocols until it’s way too late.

I’m so much more forgiving of the idiots in Covenant because they’re just fuckin’ dudes and ladies. They’re not soldiers or scientists or people interested in research or answering the big questions of humanity, they just wanna set up a fuckin’ religious space commune and farm stuff

Meanwhile the Prometheus crew are all like biologists and geologists and anthropologists, none of whom were told why they were going to space until they arrived at their destination, and then none of them shows a single shred of interest in what this alien world has to offer their specific field! Except for like the main lead and her boyfriend but even her boyfriend gets pissy when, even though he finds literal evidence of his long held belief in ancient aliens, he’s still depressed because they’re all dead and he can’t personally speak to one!

Oh, and then the guy who maps the alien stronghold, the guy who made the map, the guy with the map? He gets lost!!

Oh and then the other guy, the biologist? Sees an alien corpse, a literal preserved alien body, the ultimate discovery for someone in his line of work, and he immediately gets scared and leaves!! And then later he sees a live alien, a freaky one that unfolds like a venomous cobra, and he’s like “”oooo you’re cute lemme touch you”!!!

Prometheus is a movie that carries itself like it’s smart and portentous but despite every amazing piece of production design and every interesting thematic connection, it’s all held together by the dumbest characterization and the most hamfisted, unnatural dialogue and I hate hate hate it

I don’t think I’ve been more disappointed by a movie in my life, cuz by god those first trailers looked incredible

Also lately I’ve felt like somehow I am tapped into the zeitgeist because I came into this thread specifically to say I just watched Prometheus and Covenant again! That’s wild!

Covenant still rules, by the way, I like it a little more every time I watch it and it is tragic we won’t get to see Fassbender as that character again

It makes for unsympathetic and frustrating movie characters tho that’s the thing

I definitely don’t think covenant is good by any stretch, but it has two action sequences with a xenomoprh that are actually decent so I appreciate those crumbs of value

The sound, music and visuals are great in both, but yeah my god the scripts and dialogue are terrible

These aren’t real doctors, they’re movie doctors, furthermore they’re science fiction movie doctors

I want different things from my science fiction movie doctors

Saw Shang Chi! 7/10, making it one of the beat ones of these

Did raise an eyebrow when the Asian superheroes
manage to survive the deadly forest maze through the power of drifting in a car

In a movie that' mostly good about its representative agenda it felt a little like harkening back to when every Asian heroine had a purple streak in their hair

I genuinely found that super creepy. Despite being cg it was a decent collection of creepy imagery. But would’ve been so much better with some practical work

It’s why I actually found the Engineers to be the most convincing visual and I really dug their vibe. The concept of them and their dismissal of the humans was genuinely cool. I love how it’s just like “ugh vermin” and wrecks them all. Unfortunately in covenant they changed the look of the engineers and they weren’t as unnerving

I fucking love this part and it’s part of why I think the movie’s good

We’ve seen so many fucking alien movies by now that they’re not actually scary anymore, they’re like Draculas or whatever, we know all their moves and all their lore so there’s nothing unknown anymore

Covenant makes them scary again by just changing their rules and behaviors a little bit and it’s genuinely freaky! When that one weird, gangly, pale, soft-shelled lookin alien just stands up and breathes in front of David and it has no visible eyes or face but a bunch of blood around a barely visible mouth… man that shit legit unnerved me!

Ooooh that’s another good one, solid creature feature with good kills

Admittedly it’s been a while since I saw it but I also felt like Life’s scientists were at least stoked to find an alien! Like their reactions to it made sense and made the whole turn more tragic when it started doing space murders

And y’know all these movies are kind of anti-science at the end of the day, but Life’s whole moral center is basically “don’t go looking for shit, don’t go caring about shit, don’t go being curious about shit, shit will kill you you dumb fuck”

The "twist" at the end of Covenant was so distractingly obvious, it ruined the final action scene for me because I was going "Are they... serious?" the whole time. I tend to think both Prometheus and Covenant had some really good production values that might be enough to tell someone who hasn't watched them to watch them, but the script, logic, themes, etc all suck to an impressive level. Like, maybe the worst out of any recent sci-fi movie I've had any interest in.

  • ProhassProhass Registered User regular
I had that exact thought, I couldn’t pay attention to the last like 20 minutes of action cos I knew it would all be moot if they didn’t address the obvious twist

  • OlivawOlivaw good name, isn't it? the foot of mt fujiRegistered User regular
It's not a twist!! It's dramatic irony!! They weren't trying to fool you!!

So your argument is that the
robot changed his appearance to match the good one off screen (a detail the audience but NOT the characters were privy to) in order to... not fool the audience. And playing it as a dramatic reveal that smash cuts to the bad ending was not actually supposed to be a reveal?

This seems... incredibly unfounded and indefensible.

My argument is that the people making the movie know you've seen a movie before and so the reveal is a confirmation of what you already knew and is only a "twist" to the main character at the end

They could have taken the time to show the key detail in full and confirm it earlier, but why bother when you've seen a movie before

It's also hardly a smash cut, it's a full-on victory lap for the character involved, it's doesn't end like the friggin' Prestige or anything

It's not that they're doctors, it's that they're a hand picked highly trained and paid group of people sent on a super important mission. The mission is so important even future bezos went on it. But for some reason it appears they weren't trained or briefed at all, no one is seemingly in charge and they do dumb ass shit like take their protective space helmet off when in an unexplored alien environment. It's a well ventilated custom fit helmet with integrated audio and video feed that's probably super comfortable, not some poor fitting medical combat helmet. There was literally no reason to take it off other than to allow an alien to eat their face or something.

I like a lot of bits of Thunderball.

But it's a movie I prefer to occasionally remember, than to actually rewatch.

Scenes/sequences just go on and on, and I start checking out.

I honestly think all of the Bond films are so mediocre that there is no best Bond film. But gun to head if I had to pick it'd probably be Skyfall just by process of elimination.

Goldfinger is good! It still holds up!

Just some of these early ones have a very confusing plot that isn't very dynamic.

I’d like to see a movie in a theater again.

Personally holding out for Ghostbusters: Afterlife or the Belle anime movie, whichever comes first. Keeping my fingers crossed but there is a lot of time between now and mid-November for more of *all of this* to go south.

PSA That WILD INDIAN is available for rental/purchase on Prime. Maybe elsewhere, but that's where I got the google alert for

It's a neo-noir starring Michael Greyeyes, I've heard exclusively incredible things. My head's not quite in the right place for neo-noir, but I'm really looking forward to it when I can get my head right.

But as people are becoming aware of what an absolute powerhouse Michael Greyeyes is, I figured I should put up the proverbial signal flare
