Really hoping the sequel brings out Utgard-Loki.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Why? He's an interesting character, in that he outsmarts Loki (and Thor, but...), and has magic that seems to rival your top gods in the one major Edda myth he appears in, but he's not a particularly fleshed out dude otherwise.
I think some scholars see him as a king of the giants kind of figure, so I guess that's something. But his whole deal was "I'll fuck around with Thor, oops Thor is really powerful, I'd not have fucked around had I realised that, so let me just magic my hall/castle away. Later, suckers!"
To be fair it's not hard to outsmart even Loki. He's a trickster, but he's not actually all that intelligent in myths even when compared to Thor.

Because it's a story that involves nothing but dunking on Thor in a game series that has built Thor up as this unstoppable Juggernaut.

I think they can manage that with the characters already in the game.
I mean, sure, but I don't see where he'd fit in, or why you'd need him, and he'd have to be basically made from scratch anyway since there's nothing there really.
And I feel like the dwarves and whatnot already kind of shit on Thor in the first game?

They call him a bully and build up his mystique from what I recall.
They don't go out of their way to relentlessly, mercilessly dunk on Thor.

Well, on the one hand, it's a story of nothing but dunking on Thor.
On the other hand, it's a story about Thor being so determined to prove himself that he does shit that should be actually impossible, so he kinda comes across as being just as terrifyingly powerful as he does in other myths.
Like, he fails to drain the drinking horn. Because it was actually the ocean; nobody could drain it. But he managed to drink so much anyway that he noticeably lowered the sea level. Then he only barely manages to lift one paw of a cat. But the cat was actually Jormungandr, and said paw-lift represented enough of a shift that he caused earthquakes and came close to setting the serpent free way ahead of time. And then the old lady wrestled him into submission easily. Because she's Old Age, who nobody can hope to overcome. So the fact that he lasted any amount of time in a direct contest with her is... kind of horrifying.
At face value, Thor loses all his contests. But when you know the reality of said contests, behind Utgard-Loki's illusions, what he actually did is wild.
But the Snorri story and most adaptations of it don't dunk on Thor at all.
They paint him as dim, maybe, but terrifying. He is set a series of impossible tasks - lift Jörmungandr, drink the ocean, wrestle the personification of old age - and he does so well that Utgard-Loki gets spooked.
It's a demonstration of how awesome Thor is.

The point is that at the end Thor is fuckin furious, Loki is laughing his ass off, and Thor has no avenue to vent his rage into.

In Snorri, Thor does his remarkable feats, Utgards-Loki reveals the truth, Thor prepares to smite him, and Loki magics away. There's no moral lesson, or fingers pointed at Thor.
In fact, the verse concludes with Thor mainly focused on wanting another go at Jörmungandr, and the next verse (Hér hefr Gylfaginning, 47) picks up that idea immediately, and shows how awesome Thor is at almost managing to catch it while fishing.
I'm sure it's open to interpretation, and I don't really have a problem with Snorri's bullshit getting an additional layer of bullshit, so it's all good.

GoW 4 is coming to PC right? My friends love it, and after watching this trailer I'd really like to give it a shot in lead up to this one.

it's less that he's strong and more that he's clever enough to punk Thor and Loki.
Right, that's my first sentence in that there quote.
I just don't see why he'd be a fit for this game seriest. Like, he's a nothing character, so it'd just be an barely obscure name you'd have to develop something for from scratch. I was just curious if there was something to it beyond wanting to namedrop something.

ok I don't remember much of the story from the first (or whateverth) GoW game, but check THIS out
I mentioned this in the other thread, but that trailer alone makes Thor a force to be reckoned with and he only says a few lines.
But he says them calmly, quietly, politely even. Thor is a great many things in his myths, but cool and collected is not among any of them. That is what made me perk up more than if he'd done massive lightning blasts or flung the hammer around.

What's interesting to me is that Ratatoskr was in the first game; he was an optional arrow-summon you could find for Atreus. When summoned, he'd pop out of the ground, shit-talk you, and dig up some health and rage pickups.
He was also a life-sized spectral squirrel, so the concept of him having human motion capture is new. He's probably a bigger deal this time around.

If ratatoskr is a bigger deal then I expect we’ll see more Jormngandr and the eagle at the top of the world tree.
Ratatoskr, squirrel of chaos and discord!

Ratatoskr ferried messages from the eagle to Nidhogg, rather than Jormungandr. Nidhogg’s a dragon/serpent who gnaws the roots of Yggdrasil. (The two are a bit easy to confuse sometimes)
Would be neat to see those two.
Enlong on

Not gonna lie, I completely forgot that Nidhogg and Jormungandr were two different entities.
Still though, a bitchy squirrel whispering lies to two god-like entities for no other reason than sowing chaos/discord is fuckin hilarious

As much as I loved God of War 2018, I got the sense that they were purposefully holding back so they could really crank it up several notches in sequels.

I just finished the 2018 game a week ago or so? Super ready to play that even more and finish up some stuff. Loved every bit of that game except for the part where I am not very good at it, but that's probably because I played it for a few hours about every two months or so.
As much as I loved God of War 2018, I got the sense that they were purposefully holding back so they could really crank it up several notches in sequels.
It did a good job of setting up for future payoffs. Although it had a solid standalone story that worked really well, it also did a great job of table setting for any future games
I hope they add environmental finishers. It feels like the kind of thing that would work so well. But I don’t think that’s the direction they’re going with the combat system, ah well
I keep coming in here and forgetting that I was surprised and disappointed LAST time that this wasn't a thread about Salt and Peppa's mini-cover of The Kinks' "You Really Got Me" in their classic summer jam "Push It".
GoW 2018 is easily my favorite games, so I'm very excited for this.

I watched this video quite a while ago and it has a great analysis/breakdown of how they handled the Norse mythology, molding it to fit their narrative, but still generally staying true to it. Needless to say, spoilers abound.
I could see them playing this Thor as older and maybe more clever than a younger Thor, but just as, if not more violent and vindictive. It's just there simmering beneath the surface and while maybe he still isn't the smartest of the gods, he's learned he doesn't necessarily have to pound everything into dust to inflict a lot of pain. He could be more manipulative and exploitative.
That could be a really cool and frankly, terrifying way of depecting him.

Are you a bad enough dude to hijack the God of War thread?
I think they’re still available on PSNow but you’ll have to stream them since you can’t download PS3 games
