I don't have any actual data, but from how quickly my friends' kids are getting rid of their braces, I think there's definitely been some advancement in technology or technique that allows orthodontic treatment to proceed much more quickly than when I was a teen in the 1990s.

I've heard from a friend that it's been certainly much less torturous for his son. The new braces aren't The Rack anymore.
