Sgt Pepper taught the band to play.
That's right. On June 1, 1967 Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was released in the UK, and in the US a day later. It was the first album produced by the world's largest band after they stopped touring, and so it was their first true studio album. It instantly became one of the most important albums in rock history.
First of all, it was the first time the Beatles really stopped worrying about having to perform the songs live, so they really concentrated on the crafting of each song and working them together to build a rather cohesive album.
Second, it was released without the support of any singles - an unheard-of event, as AM radio, the dominant format of the time, was basically universally paranoid about playing album tracks due to heavy FCC monitoring for drug references and obscenity. It quickly became a huge hit regardless, and was played on AM all across the world, while serving as a major point of discussion for the then-new FM stations that frequently focused more on music discussion and analysis.
It was a revolution for its time and heralded what became a new age of music, coming right on the genesis of the hippie movement of the late 60s, inspiring an animated movie and pushing psychadelia into the mainstream more, possibly, than any other single event or release of its day.
It went on to became what is still considered today by many critics the most influential album of all time, and remains in the top 50 best-selling records ever.

Cpt. Beefheart was named after the top of his uncle's penis.
I mean, they are good. But I dont think they ever created anything that warrants the amount of fanaticism that they have.
Beatles are awesome
I hope I will enjoy my show
I have the anthology somewhere. I stole it from my step-dad, because he was an uber-fan.
And an asshole.
I also enjoy Rubber Soul more, but Sgt. Pepper's is their best crafted album.
Is he at Shiney Time Station still.
Itty bitty Ringo. He was by far, the coolest of the Beats.
I was thinkin of ya when I made the thread, duder. Knew you'd appreciate it.
Whether or not you are a fan of them is irrelevant. What they did and the impression they made on the music industry cannot be denied.
have you ever opened your mouth without giant steaming balls of retard falling out?
Ringo was the nicest.
I like Abbey Road better.
(But I still love me some Sgt Pepper)

Of course I mentioned my love of the Beatles.
One of them said "Pfft, you queer the Beatles suck balls. Fall Out Boy is totally the best band ever."
I wanted to punch him in the nuts, then rip them off and hang them above my doorway.
He may not be considered the best, but he's a Knight, and rich, and women tell lies about him! :P

Care to enlighten the rest of the class?
You taste of Axe, used condoms and teen angst.

Pet Sounds came out a year before Sgt. Peppers. Paul names it as one of the best albums ever, and apparently it was a huge influence while they were doing Sgt. Peppers.
From wikipedia:
Beatles producer George Martin stated that "Without Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper wouldn't have happened... Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds."
