So we're getting some card adjustments in a patch tomorrow. No details yet, but Reno, Zilliax (virus module), and Celestial Projectionist are on the chopping block. Hopefully that shakes things up a bit.

Will this be the third Zilliax 2.0 nerf this expansion?

It takes some intimate knowledge of how the deck functions and how to navigate each matchup, what to mulligan for, when to use or save stuff, what discovers to go for etc. It's not entirely a straightforward deck, it requires a lot of foresight and planning ahead.
For mulligans I always keep Miracle Salesman, Scarab, Staff (generally anyways, if you're trying to hard mull for Helya don't keep it), Helya (THE most important card in the deck!!). Any greedy slow hyperdraw decks, hard mull for Helya. You are gonna take them to fatigue and you need to punish them for drawing.
Fast/aggro matchups, keep removal (esp Tomb Traitor with plagues in hand) and early minions (1 drop into Hematurge is good, keep Kvaldir). Slower matchups keep Chillfallen Baron (the early draw is important!! not sure you can afford to keep vs fast matchups??), Horseman (don't wait for value vs Mage/Warrior/Priest etc just slam that fucker on Turn 6). ETC vs Warrior for Dirty Rat. Asphyxiate vs decks that will slam fatboys early (DH, Painlock for example). Salesman on Turn 1 is the strongest play. Salesman > Scarab > Staff in terms of play priority.
Whenever you slam Dirty Rat MAKE SURE you have an answer for it, whether that's Asphyxiate, Chained Guardian, Horseman, etc. Don't always need Rat from ETC; Viper is extremely important in some matchups. Warrior if it's too late for Rat, Viper for the Ignis weapon, Reno Shaman, Hunter in general, Spell Mage for Keyboard (do they still run this?). Flint is there for when you want neither and just need some value. You can replace him with something else, Yogg or Prison can work. Worst case you can just take Viper for the cycle.
For discovers it depends on what you need. Hematurge provides SO many options, from mass removal (Corpse Explosion, Threads, Soulstealer) to healing to single target removal to extra Horsemans... Runes of Darkness is always good. DK weapons are strong as hell, extra Staffs vs slow matchups, Quartzite Crusher is always welcome. Gotta plan ahead and know what you might need for certain things.
Scarab is just aces. 2 drops are goated as hell. Card draw, extra plagues, some removal... lots and lots of good shit. Hematurge, Necrotic Mortician... Bounces are great (hell, bounce Scarab even). Celestial Projectionist can be really fucking good (extra Chained Guardians! Hematurges! Helya! etc etc). Even just an emergency taunt can be good. You're looking for tempo or value from Scarab mostly. Draw is always good. There's that one Pirate that has a 2 damage battlecry of you've got a weapon. Wandmaker is great. THERE'S A LOT OF GOOD 2 DROPS. Even Kobold is good, Common Excavates are pretty good! And it can pave the way for potential future Excavates if you're lucky (I have legit gotten Azure Rat out in several games).
Chained Guardian is your best friend, he's big and strong. Know when to save it for removal and when to slam it down for pressure.
It does really fucking well vs... most decks? Favored vs Rogue, Mage, Druid, Warrior, Rainbow Death Knight (non-handbuff anyways)... 50/50 vs Priest I think (maybe 40/60), they're snakey mfers. Plague DK matchup is probably 50/50, depends on who gets their plagues rolling first and who keeps the pressure up.
Hunter is by far the worst matchup... there's a few other rough matchups... Painlock/Fatiguelock, Paladin, Handbuff DK can be tricky. DH can be dicey, depends on if they highroll into Maggy (or multiple Maggies). Not impossible though. Fatiguelock you just have to make sure to clear their early floods of Imps, keep healed up, put pressure on them, and by god hope that you can Rat out Popgar. Painlock you focus on clearing early board and making sure you can deal with Giants and shit. Paladin... Honestly go fucking aggro with early minions, slam down 1 and 2 drops and go fucking face, save Asphyxiate and stuff for when they start dropping their bullshit. DH keep Asphyxiate and/or Death Strike for the 6/5. Horseman is good too, but just make sure you can deal with early game.
PLAN AHEAD FOR RENO. Bait out it if you can. Assume they will have it on Turn 9. Save important shit for after the Reno drop (like Primus etc). Be careful about stuff like Yogg stealing important shit. Horseman gives a ton of value and removal and face damage. You can get a TON of good shit from the discovers (Cage Head is great, play him -> Hero Power him -> 9/9 Charge/Taunt!!), you can get extra plagues, Reska, Sylvanas, Corpse Bride, etc etc etc. Lots and lots of good shit.
Just takes some getting used to and some practice.
Made it to Dad legend and now I want to try something fresh. Help me figure out what the Odd Priest I faced a few pages back had in his deck. Pip and Baku were there and Marin seems like a safe inclusion at 7 mana. All of the Overheal cards, of course, and all of the odd healing spells. Maybe a Raza the Resealed? Thirsty Drifter?

I'm guessing it's a bad deck that just highrolled you.
The major story in Hearthstone this week is the explosion of Dragon Druid, a previously fringe archetype that has skyrocketed in popularity following the introduction of Marin the Manager. Marin offers Dragon Druid a big payoff for its ramping capabilities, improving its late game and encouraging it to fully commit to ramp with Doomkins. Dragon Druid’s play rate at top legend is growing so quickly that we anticipate it to come close to 30% next week. Outside of legend ranks, the deck is relatively unknown, but that’s quickly changing.
That explains why I've been facing so many Druids this week.
Because he's a legendary that they've designed to work like that, similar to the warrior legendary that swaps back and forth between weapon and creature.
Also fuck me with the Zilliax Virus Module nerf, man
Whole point of that was that it came down a turn earlier than Twin Module. 8 mana vs 9 mana was pretty huge, and I swapped to Virus after noticing how much of an impact getting it down one turn earlier can make
Twin Module provides more board and more frontloaded healing, but Virus meant it couldn't be removed with spells. And in most cases you'd easily get 4 hits off with it and basically clear half the board
Is the nerf warranted....? I dunno. I guess so. It was frustrating to play against, and could easily create deadlock situations... but I looked at it as a good alternative to Twin Module. Now that they're both 9 mana....
So the real question is, is it back to Twin Module, or stick with Virus despite the nerf...?
Virus was pretty silly and pretty much the only good answer was Yogg, which incidentally is in basically every deck that was playing Virus. I think it's clear it was doing way too much at 8 mana.
It's way more sticky than Twin, and Twin also doesn't have poisonous so it can't one-shot giant stuff. I think them costing the same seems reasonable.

Speaking of Twin Zilliax, I decided to give this Plague DK list a go for my final climb to dad legend. I'd gotten to D8 with VS's OTK Handbuff DK list but kept having bad games with it tonight, so I decided to see if good old Plague could get me there. After a bad start, the matches started getting better and I made it to dad legend without too much more pain.
It's hard to say if Virus Zilliax would have been a better choice in any games. I think I only ended up playing Zilliax like twice anyway, and in those situations, the twins did what I needed.
GoodKingJayIIIThey wanna get mygold on the ceilingRegistered Userregular
Doomkin is one of those obnoxious cards that is kind of a neat idea but if it's ever actually good enough for regular play (like now) it just feels miserable to play against.
Zilliax has been the least fun HS has been in a while for me. I like mid-range and that card kills your board while full healing the opponent without fail. Especially if they pull out multiple of em.
TIME TO RANT ABOUT RELEVANT STUFF FOR MY TWO DECK LISTS LOL
Death Knight is pushing a lot of Frost support (boooo nothing for my UUB Plague DK) so I can't make use of any of those!!! But Warlock can probably make use of those. Warlock getting some Deathrattle stuff, more self-damage stuff for Painlock and Fatiguelock zzzzz. For my Excavate Lock list, Sacrificial Imp seems good for early stall (and an alt option for Endgame), "Health" Drink seems great holy moly. Freezes from DK?? Maybe, I unno. I think the Aggro Warlock lists benefit more from the DK stuff, Deathrattles and all that (esp the Legendary).
But DK gets access to Shaman's cards, which actually have a lot of really appealing cards for my list! Shaman is pushing a Multiple Spell Schools angle and that's pretty cool. I could definitely get a lot of value out of Siren Song, Frosty Decor might be good for stall, Meltemental looks INCREDIBLY good for early stall (definitely replacing Rainbow Seamstresses with this). Not sure about the rest? Malted Magma has some flexibility with the multiple uses and can be comboed with Threads of Despair, probably.. but maybe it's not good enough to slot in? Natural Talent... ehhh?? Probably not good enough, and Nagas have... varying amounts of value... some are good, but some are gonna be dead weight. The Shaman Legendary looks sick though:
Very versatile card that can do a lot of things and give a lot of value. Yes I think I will add that in mhm mhm mhm. Down with the Ship and Asphyxiate are both Shadow so that's pretty much guaranteed to give the destroy two enemies part. If I wanted to slot in Watcher of the Sun/Ignis I could get access to Holy as well, and then spin the wheel with Siren Song.
The NEUTRALS though oh my gosh, some of those seem really busted. Mixologist seems great:
The custom potion is literally all the possible effects from the 1 mana potion from Kazakus. Lotta good stuff there, draw a card, deal 3 damage, deal 2 damage to all minions, gain 4 armor, freeze a minion etc etc etc. Really good value!
Travel Agent also seems really damn good:
I think the only real whiff would be Jungle Gym but everything else looks great. Again, versatile card.
Few others that have some potential. Carry-On Grub seems like a really good draw option??? 4 mana draw 2 on a 5/4 body? Yeah not bad. Granted you have to pay the 1 mana to get the drawn cards. Overplanner seems great for fishing out specific cards from your deck. Scrapbooking Student could have potential in some decks I think. Like imagine playing Forge of Wills into Scrapbooking Student, you'd immediately get a 5/5 and two 5/5s with Rush on board. I know for sure people are gonna try and combo Bayfin Bodybuilder with Dirty Rat, whether that's good or not remains to be seen (I think that's too slow personally). Christ, a ton of Pirate support too, Pirate Rogue is gonna be back on the menu. No verdict on the Legendaries yet for me. Incindius is gonna be annoying as fuck in Highlander Warrior though.
plus there's other classes and decks too i guess like w/e tho
