Disposing/Donating Medications? (IL)

MichaelLCMichaelLC In what furnace was thy brain?ChicagoRegistered User regular
So skipping the backstory, I have an unopened packet of very expensive cancer drugs (redundant, I know) that I would like to donate rather than destroy.

They're good until March 2023, so got some time. I saw something called Sirum, which seems like a very tech bro/gal thing but maybe good?

Any suggestions on where I could send them? Illinois just had a law go into effect that allows/helps this apparently.

Thanks.

I don't know for sure where you would go to donate.
I think my first stop in this case would be my doctor or pharmacist to get information from them on how to donate the medication.

I was able to find this, but it apparently hasn’t been set up yet.

There's a lot of situations that's going to be difficult to judge whether or not you can donate it. Talk to your local pharmacist, they should be willing to help.

Contact Illinois Prescription Drug Repository Coalition.

P.S: Ie, the organization responsible for making drug donation legal in Illinois. Just a month ago it was illegal.

I would talk to any Cancer centers in your area and see if they can take the donation. If no, then talk to your Pharmacist.

Also, I hope this means you beat cancer. =)

Thanks. Yeah I'll give Walgreens a call.

Thanks, saw that IL site. Looks like they got some work to do.

You might also check with Dispensary of Hope. I'm not sure if they're set up to take donations from private individuals but they might be, at least in your state maybe.

Full Disclosure: I do not work for DoH but I do work for the org that runs it.
