I arranged to go quote for a job this afternoon that I probably shouldn't have. Originally the client wanted me to do their hedges, but I couldn't make the first meeting, then when we rescheduled she said they'd done the hedge themselves but could I come look at their lawn instead and I just automatically agreed. But I don't have the equipment and stuff to do much with lawns beyond just mowing, so if they need proper lawn treatment I'm going to have to quote for a lot more than if they just get a lawn specialist in. I kind of want to cancel but I already did that once. So now I guess I get to go there and tell them... not to hire me.

The latest IT trend that I'm behind on is Infrastructure As Code - basically everything is just declarative text, you run it, you get a network/environment/application/whatever. I think it's neat, and I fully recognize the value, but
It drives me fucking nuts that I could make this change in under a minute in the GUI, but instead I've wasted a whole day unable to make a change because the information I need to do it as code hasn't been fucking documented anywhere. If the people in charge are going to do this and lock everything down to this degree (I get it, I'm in security too), there should be comprehensive instructions to prevent this kind of loss of productivity.

We're moving that way too, and it's still a whole lot of learning, so at the moment it feels more like "infrastructure as cut'n'paste", but I'm slowly learning and understanding.

I got moved from the lowest level reading class in 7th grade to the highest because I read every single thing in the reading program in a week. It was kinda big deal for that tiny catholic school.

I immediately became a C plus reading student after the move as I had to read actual novels and write stupid papers about them.

Booooo I finally got laid off on account of them realizing they had given me no work to do and had no work planned in the future that would require my services. Which you know, fair. Just wanted to beat them to it by finding a new job! This feels like I lost a race. They're giving me a total of 5 weeks severance which is slightly hilarious, paying me something like 10% of my total earned wage for explicitly doing nothing instead of just implicitly.

But! I have several interviews for more interesting places lined up next week, and I'm having a good time with the technical project for one of them as we speak.

    We're all in this together

I remember being insulted with the reading group I got placed in one year, and read the book assigned in, like, an hour, Teacher tried to catch me out, and quizzed me on the book, and I passed.
So I got moved up and felt vindicated.

I never got moved ahead grades, though. Looking back, I was often the smartest in the room, but very behind socially. I think they believed I would get even further behind socially if moved ahead, but never really.. tried to help me along with any of my issues. But I did well on standardized tests, and passed my classes, so they passed me along even when I was having near-weekly meltdowns.

If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing

I have begun my famous WW1 lessons. First two classes were very engaged and asked a ton of very good questions throughout. US uniform is actually much more comfortable than the British one. Even with the jodhpur style pants.

I don't know you guys, I might actually be good at this.

Nah. That can't possibly be true.

In junior high Accelerated Reader was a thing. The librarian at that school annoyed me because I had long since been reading at an adult level considering I'd demolished my mother's entire Anne McCaffrey collection. Except Pern. Never liked Pern books. Anyway, librarian was very insistent that I should stop reading books I enjoyed like Seventh Tower series and other fantasy YA novels and instead read boring shit like Little House on the Prairie books. Because she thought I'd enjoy them if I gave them a chance? Because she felt I wasn't mentally challenging myself with my book choices? To widen my reading genres?

Nah. Because the boring shit was worth more points on AR. That's it. That was the whole reason she kept trying to get me to read the boring books.

Granted, I had plenty of excused absences, and indeed, that day I was on a Computer Science Team trip in Montgomery, so my absence was excused. But apparently given that it was the perfect attendance award, the folks running the awards assumed we'd all be there.

wow core memory unlock or whatever people say

I won a perfect attendance award in 6th grade and started crying while accepting it because I was suicidally depressed about my social situation/school at the time and realized I wanted nothing more than to not be there as they recognized my "accomplishment" of being present in a place I hated 100% of the time.

Light at the end of the tunnel, I swear; and it doesn't seem to be an oncoming train. The only remaining complication is that the checks are every other week now and I have to get things synched up to the bills. First check is only going to be a week and a day, but my days are looking like 10 hours on the weekdays right now and possibly also hours on Saturday. Until I get adequately trained up on the product knowledge my manager is having to work 6 days a week, and I will probably be there with him the whole time.

It might all come together before rent is due. And if it doesn't, I can take a late fee for now.

My hourly rate is very nice, and I am hourly not salary so overtime should apply.

I know I have been arguing about how they basically toss new people to the wolves instead of training them or following up making sure they are trained
Since Last Oct when they got a bunch of people in Sept I started to point out they lost the initiative. To create the team they wanted and so on. I was getting hand waved off and comments of you don't know what you are talking about. Now I just say that my job is not in danger because I failed to train the crew
As I left I complained about S the new hire they put in frozen and how A trained him poorly. As I tried to correct certain things he would do but he would say that's not what A would say to do.
At the end of the shift I talked to the manager about it who replied who do you want? I have a bunch of guys that are not trained and a bunch of girls {most of the women are on the GM side which is a whole other issue]
I pointed out the above but the general read I got from the manager was exasperation. Because when I talked about training she pointed out I could at least train them. I said I cannot be everywhere and the managers could at least follow up to see if they new people are getting trained and correctly
More convertion and she defaulted her phone in a light novel of a text so I knew again. They don't want to fix their problems because they don't know how

At my job, I have to get quotes from vendors. I can generate a web quote online, but our procurement department does not accept web quotes. So I have to contact the sales rep, who generates a quote that says the exact same thing (same prices, etc.) only it says "Sales Quote" instead of "Web Quote" on the top.
This process can take several days. If the sales rep does not get back to me, I have to call the company, and the person then has to contact the sales rep to get the quote (this usually gets the sales rep to finish the quote up more quickly, but I hate calling and explaining why a web quote won't work for us) And funding here is a whole lot of "No money" "Quick we have thousands to spend in the next week" "now we're going to spend over a month processing your order" "Make these changes in the quote in the next day or two" "another month to actually order it", so it's just a whole lot of hurry-up and wait steps.

I'm sad because he was as nerdy as me.

However, I did use news of his departure to scare the shit out one of our problematic new guys.

Things to do while "working" at Wall-mart (or any place of horror) instead of breaking your mind and body:
    - shop the toy aisle
    - Find a ball or bean bag in the sports aisle and play catch with your fellow employees
    - Hide in the bathroom and play a time-waster game on your phone. Stay in there for 30 minute minimum. If anyone asks about you, say you had an episode of IBS. Have IBS a lot from now on.
    - Read a book on your phone

If your brain doesn't allow you to take as many of these breaks as you need, then get yourself some headphones, a music device (or your phone if it has enough juice for the whole day) and listen to something nice while you work. Whether that be music, an audiobook, or a comedy podcast - anything to take your mind away from the suffering surrounding you.

These plans only fail to work if you're in a call center, because they micromanage your every second there, and you will probably need a doctor's note to claim long bathroom breaks, and you can't put headphones in because your ears are needed for calls.

I’m firmly on the “you don’t need to give a reason to call out” side.

But I’d also add in a corollary of “if you no-call/no-show, you should at least provide SOME reason when you next show up.”

Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust

When the wife worked for corporate the call out procedure was literally to call a number and leave a message. There was no push back, no fighting, just "I'm blah, employee number 12345, calling out for my 10-6 shift."

  • InquisitorInquisitor Registered User regular
Yeah. That’s how it is for me. I basically just need to inform people that I will be absent and tell them what pool of paid time off (personal vs sick) to pull the funds from.

Since my manager sees it if I am doing something fun like traveling I usually include it so we can talk about my trip when I get back, but that’s mostly just for fun.
