Unsupportable Headcanon: the reason why this Shepard gets fed up with Garrus's shit is that "I do things MY WAY without ANY OVERSIGHT because I am a GENIUS" got his commanding officer humiliated and his squad killed on the backstory planet and now Shepard has a giant-ass scar on his face and a lifetime of PTSD for the trouble

Your mistake was playing Shepard as a guy.
MaleShep is inferior on every level but he's at his worst in ME1.
Depends on the difficulty but yeah unless you're playing on "I like putting nails into my own genitals and then complaining about it" difficulty there's only a couple of parts that can be dire.
Getting Liara first is one because the final fight can really suck without some levels and gear. The other is Luna because <Mr. Torgue>EXPLOSIONS</Mr. Torgue>
The real hard (well, tedious tbh) part of ME1 is getting all of the collectibles so that you can smile like an idiot in ME3.
maybe if i play the series again i'll play renegade femshep and romance garrus like that joke in that one decade old thirty minute video essay on how the me3 ending was bad, actually

Biotic shotgun man is actually pretty solid as a combat powerhouse. Pistols are really good in ME1, and shotguns are solid, and you can shotgun and pistol as well as about anyone as a vanguard. Most of Shepard's capability with a weapon type just come from points into that weapon's skill, so if you have that skill you can use the weapon well. On top of that, you have the shield recharge and barrier abilities, which are a good "press this to not die" button and a great "press this to not die" button. You also have the adrenaline surge ability, which resets all your cooldowns, so once you're out of the low level doldrums every class in ME1 has to deal with you can get some real violence of action going.
Though do note ME1 is kinda bullshit, so while you will get OP the game will also just gank you occasionally.
Lastly it sounds like you went right from Therum to Noveria? Don't forget there's sidequests you can do. While they're generally not like, "oh that sidequest was great, you gotta make sure you do it," they're good for XP and money to help ease the difficulty curve.

No, FemShep is paragon. Except when she tazes the Batarian mechanic. And when she pushes a merc out a window. And punches an admiral. And the other times I'm forgetting when the Renegade interrupt is the right thing to do. But otherwise totally paragon.
