Cat Stinking Up My House

AbsoluteZeroAbsoluteZero The new film by Quentin KoopantinoRegistered User regular
We have adopted a new kitty cat. Unfortunately said cat's waste products are unusually powerful. It makes my house smell like a garbage dump, and it could just about knock you over if you step into the room where the cat box is.

Scooping the litter frequently has helped somewhat, but unless I scoop immediately after she potties it only helps so much. In the past with other kitties we used Arm & Hammer Multi-Cat kitty litter and that worked really well, but it cannot stand up to this cat's powerful droppings.

Can anyone recommend a cat litter for especially stinky cat waste?

Do I need to take this cat to the vet? She seems perfectly fine and very happy and playful, but it's slightly concerning how her poo smell is cranked up to 11.

Is there something different I could feed her that might help? Right now she eats Purina One dry food.

Thanks H/A peeps.

YMMV, but is a grain-free food? I haven't fed a grain containing food to my cats in a long time, but I seem to remember that the poo was a bit smellier when I did so.

Also, the type of litter box you use can help. We use a top entry deal for our cats because one of them is a champion litter tosser, but they also seem to help keep the smell down. We line them with the ~30 gallon trash bags, and that makes litter changes really easy.

You could try a raw food diet, I'm a big proponent for my dogs raw food diet

Her poops are much smaller and desner than when she did dry food. Not sure about the smell.

Our kitty is also quite the litter tosser so I think I'll give the top entry box a shot. Will also give the grain free thing a try. Would the fresh pet stuff qualify as raw food diet?

Our cat box has a filter in the top. Not really sure if it helps or not, but no one notices any cat waste smells, so it might. We also use grain free food, so that could be the secret to our not stinky success.

I first started by making the raw food myself, but it was a super pain in the ass and now I do Darwinspet.com and their delivery.

Looks like pet fresh is still cooked, but I'm not familiar. My ex recently switched her cat to darwins (we got the dog togther and the dog has been on raw for ~5 years) and said its dandruff issue cleared up.

Darwins first 10lbs for $15 is a good deal to see if you pet is willing to transition to raw meat diet. I think they recommend you slowly increase it from 10% raw 90% whatever the current food is, until you get to 100% raw after a few weeks.

My dog being a dog, didn't care and switched to 100% immediately and then asked for more please.

Edit: it does take up a lot of freezer room, so be ready for that. A lot of the pet stores will also have a freezer with frozen raw food inside, slightly different from the fridge with cooked wet food inside. Dog raw is ~75% meat 25% veg, but cat ones are supposed to be 100% meat, iirc

Since you just got her, it could be caused either by worms or the change in diet. It's definitely a good idea to get any new arrival checked out by a vet though and definitely bring that up if you do. Usually in those cases they will do a dewormer just to be on the safe side.

...dewormer poops can also be a hell of a thing.
